Book The Alaskan Boundary Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Alaskan Boundary In January, 1886, the Minister of the United States in Lon don, acting under instructions, proposed the appointment of a joint commission, which should designate and establish the boun dary line, or else report such data as might afford a basis for its establishment by a new treaty. The Dominion Government, to whom this proposal was referred, expressed the opinion that a preliminary survey was preferable to a formally-constituted joint commission, and suggested that such a survey would enable the two governments to establish a satisfactory basis for the delimita tion of the boundary and demonstrate whether the conditions of the convention of 1825 are applicable to the now more or less known features of the country. Book Consideration of the Claims and Conduct of the United States

Download or read book Consideration of the Claims and Conduct of the United States written by Henry Bliss and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Consideration of the Claims and Conduct of the United States: Respecting Their North Eastern Boundary, and on the Value of the British Colonies in North America The dominions of Great Britain are so vast in extent, so divided in situation, and so various in their relations, that their general and respec tive interests must often distract, and sometimes perhaps escape, the attention even of the ablest and most vigilant government. The internal oeconomy of a highly civilized and redundant population, and the foreign policy of war or peace in Europe, Whose political questions are generally more important, and always more in viting, than those of distant and less cultivated Countries, so entirely engross the public mind, that it is not surprising, if the concerns of some remote and obscurer Provinces of the empire should sometimes meet with less consideration. Book Antiquarianism and Intellectual Life in Europe and China 1500 1800

Download or read book Antiquarianism and Intellectual Life in Europe and China 1500 1800 written by Peter N Miller and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2012-06-13 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a project in comparative history, but along two distinct axes, one historical and the other historiographical. Its purpose is to constructively juxtapose the early modern European and Chinese approaches to historical study that have been called "antiquarian." As an exercise in historical recovery, the essays in this volume amass new information about the range of antiquarian-type scholarship on the past, on nature, and on peoples undertaken at either end of the Eurasian landmass between 1500 and 1800. As a historiographical project, the book challenges the received---and often very much under conceptualized---use of the term "antiquarian" in both European and Chinese contexts. Readers will not only learn more about the range of European and Chinese scholarship on the past---and especially the material past---but they will also be able to integrate some of the historiographical observations and corrections into new ways of conceiving of the history of historical scholarship in Europe since the Renaissance, and to reflect on the impact of these European terms on Chinese approaches to the Chinese past. This comparison is a two-way street, with the European tradition clarified by knowledge of Chinese practices, and Chinese approaches better understood when placed alongside the European ones.

Download or read book Boundaries and Justice written by Sohail H. Hashmi and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the supreme political and economic significance of boundaries--and ongoing challenges to existing national boundaries--scant attention has been paid to their ethics. This volume explores how diverse ethical traditions understand the political and property rights reflected in territorial and jurisdictional boundaries. It is the first book to bring together thinkers from a range of traditions, both religious and secular, to discuss the ethics of boundaries. Each contributor represents a tradition's views on questions surrounding the use of boundaries to delimit property and political rights. What does it mean to own something? What resources should not be privately owned? What justifies the erection of political boundaries between one people and another? How ''hard'' should such boundaries be? What rights extend to minorities within a state? Should territorial boundaries coincide with social ones? Does national autonomy have an ethical basis, or is it an aspect of modern power politics? Should we aim for a more inclusive community than that afforded by modern nation-states? Cross-chapter dialogue and a substantive conclusion draw out similarities and differences among the traditions represented, traditions that include Christianity, classical liberalism, Confucianism, international law, Islam, Judaism, liberal egalitarianism, and natural law. In addition to the editors, the contributors are Nigel Biggar, Joseph Boyle, Joseph Chan, Russell Hardin, Will Kymlicka, Loren Lomasky, Robert McCorquodale, Richard B. Miller, David Novak, Sulayman Nyang, Michael Nylan, Raul C. Pangalangan, Daniel Philpott, Jeremy Rabkin, Hillel Steiner, M. Raquibuz Zaman, and Noam J. Zohar.
