Book A History of the Irish Dominicans from Original Sources and Unpublished Records Vol 1

Download or read book A History of the Irish Dominicans from Original Sources and Unpublished Records Vol 1 written by M. H. Macinerny and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Irish Dominicans, From Original Sources and Unpublished Records, Vol. 1: Irish Dominican Bishops (1224-1307) Recalled from Australia, over four years ago, to write a history of the Dominicans in Ireland, I soon realised that the task was far larger than a careless observer might suppose. For one thing, I discovered that the Dominicans had been intimately associated, in one way or another, with almost every important movement that had taken place in Ireland during the last seven centuries. To form a right estimate of the part which members of the Order had taken in these various movements would entail a vast amount of close and painstaking research. A hundred and fifty years ago, the illustrious De Burgo. Author of the Hibernia Dominicana, wrote a history of the Irish Dominicans which still remains a classic in Irish his torical literature. But if De Burgo were alive to-day, he could not conscientiously compress a history of the Irish Dominicans into the compass of a single volume. Since his time, and especially within the last fifty or sixty years, all manner of new sources have been Opened to the historical inquirer. Among the most valuable of these sources are the Calendars of State Papers and of Papal Registers, which throw a flood of light upon many persons and transactions that were but dimly known in De Burgo's day. Book Medieval Irish Dominican Studies

Download or read book Medieval Irish Dominican Studies written by Benedict O'Sullivan and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These studies on the Dominicans or Friars Preachers of medieval Ireland are unique, for no other account of equal length exists. Benedict O'Sullivan published them in twenty-seven successive articles in the Irish Rosary between 1948 and 1953. Since that monthly journal, defunct since the early 1960s, can scarcely now be found, the very existence of Father O'Sullivan's work is known to few and read by hardly anyone. Little now appears in print relative to ecclesiastical concerns after 1200. Father O'Sullivan's narrative account of the Dominicans in medieval Ireland may not be the last word on the subject, but it is certainly the first and is still the only one to hand.

Book Dominican Education in Ireland 1820 1930

Download or read book Dominican Education in Ireland 1820 1930 written by Máire M. Kealy and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the part played by Dominican women in schools and colleges from 1820 to 1930, this book brings new findings to the history of the Catholic education of women and makes an important contribution to the general history of education in Ireland. While the Dominicans were engaged in primary education from 1820, they were more involved in running boarding and day schools which catered for secondary education. Chapter 1 concentrates on primary education including the involvement of the state through the 1831 Stanley System of national education. Chapter 2 deals specifically with the secondary sector and explores some of the similarities and differences between the educational methods used by two other European orders who set up schools, and the Dominicans. Chapter 3 details the Dominicans' struggle to set up university classes for the women who had availed of the Intermediate Act of 1878, which qualified them to attend undergraduate courses and enter for the examinations of the Royal University. The Dominicans are acknowledged as being the first to provide higher education for Catholic women. They also provided a training college for national teachers and for secondary teachers. The fourth chapter covers the training of the nuns themselves for the teaching profession and the foundation in 1930 of the Conference of Convent Secondary Schools (CCSS), which played an important part in Irish education until well beyond the mid-twentieth century.Ã?Â?Ã?Â?
