Book Forbidden Rites

Download or read book Forbidden Rites written by Richard Kieckhefer and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 1998-02-26 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preserved in the Bavarian State Library in Munich is a manuscript that few scholars have noticed and that no one in modern times has treated with the seriousness it deserves. Forbidden Rites consists of an edition of this medieval Latin text with a full commentary, including detailed analysis of the text and its contents, discussion of the historical context, translation of representative sections of the text, and comparison with other necromantic texts of the late Middle Ages. The result is the most vivid and readable introduction to medieval magic now available. Like many medieval texts for the use of magicians, this handbook is a miscellany rather than a systematic treatise. It is exceptional, however, in the scope and variety of its contents—prayers and conjurations, rituals of sympathetic magic, procedures involving astral magic, a catalogue of spirits, lengthy ceremonies for consecrating a book of magic, and other materials. With more detail on particular experiments than the famous thirteenth-century Picatrix and more variety than the Thesaurus Necromantiae ascribed to Roger Bacon, the manual is one of the most interesting and important manuscripts of medieval magic that has yet come to light.

Book Freedom from Passions in Augustine

Download or read book Freedom from Passions in Augustine written by Yuan Gao and published by Religions and Discourse. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first systematic study of Augustine's insights into passions as well as his approach to the therapy of emotions and their sanctification. Analysing various phases of Augustine's writings, this work explores the systematic structure of Augustine's tenets on emotions and on freedom from passions. The general context is Augustine's philosophical and theological convictions on the issue of amor sui and amor Dei. Based upon a detailed analysis of original Latin texts and a critical examination of recent research, the author demonstrates how the language and conception of passions are tightly linked with Augustine's developing views of the philosophical paradigm of emotions and his later theological disputes with schismatics and heretics. In offering a comprehensive account of freedom from passions in Augustine's theological anthropology, this book makes a creative contribution to his understanding of the moral psychology of passions in social and political dimensions and the idea of the deification of emotions.

Book Andreas and the Ambiguity of Courtly Love

Download or read book Andreas and the Ambiguity of Courtly Love written by Paolo Cherchi and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A resolution to the vexed problem whether a troubadour's love is erotic or spiritual is offered by Paolo Cherchi through a new reading of Andreas Capellanus' De Amore (written around 1186-1196). He suggests that Andreas, using a rhetorical strategy that creates ambiguity, condemns courtly love because its claim that passion generates virtue is untenable and deceitful. Although Andreas grasped the core of the courtly love 'system,' namely, the relation between passion and ethics, he failed to consider the notion of mezura, that courtly virtue through which troubadours transformed nature into culture, and erotic passion into social discourse. Cherchi offers an innovative interpretation and a close reading of selected poems. He traces the history of Provençal lyric poetry, highlighting some of the significant personalities and movements.
