Book Marital Interaction

Download or read book Marital Interaction written by John Mordechai Gottman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marital Interaction: Experimental Investigations deals with experimental studies on marital interaction. Emphasis is on the importance of the role of description in the study of social interaction. Methods for the analysis of pattern and sequence, including cross-spectral time-series analysis, are also presented. Comprised of 15 chapters, this book begins with a historical review of several research traditions that have concerned themselves with families and marriages: the sociological tradition; the family therapy or systems tradition; the social learning tradition; and the developmental tradition. Research that points to the potential importance of the observation of consensual decision-making processes is also reviewed. A model of marital interaction called the Structural Model, which can be used to predict changes in marital satisfaction, is described. Subsequent chapters focus on the Couples Interaction Scoring System, an observational system for categorizing marital interaction; modern concepts of the assessment of reliability, particularly the stringent assessment that is necessary for sequential analysis; differences between well-functioning and poorly functioning marriages; couples' interactional styles in terms of communication skill deficits; and the concept of an individual's social competence. This monograph will be of interest to psychologists engaged in research on marriage, as well as sociologists and clinical researchers.

Book The Relationship Between Dominance and Discussion Topics in Couples

Download or read book The Relationship Between Dominance and Discussion Topics in Couples written by Courtney L. Behrens and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between dominance and discussion topics in romantic couple relationships. Specifically, the author wanted to determine if who generated the topic of discussion influenced the frequency of domineering and dominant behaviors. To date, no study has specifically studied the relationship between dominance and discussion topics in couples. The couples participated in two ten-minute discussions of which each of their chosen topics was the focus of discussion. The data was videotaped, transcribed, and then coded using the Family Relational Communication Control Coding System in order to measure for domineeringness and dominance. Couples were also categorized, based on their level of dominance, as egalitarian, wife-dominant, or husband-dominant. Self-report data of marital satisfaction using the Dyadic Adjustment Scale was also used in order to assess the relationship between couple type and marital satisfaction. Results for the relationship between marital satisfaction and couple type were not significant and were not consistent with past research. Neither egalitarian nor non-egalitarian couples were found to have a significant relationship with either low or high marital satisfaction. Overall, the author found significant relationships between domineeringness and who generates the topic of discussion as well as between dominance and who generates the topic of discussion. Furthermore, women were found to be more domineering and dominant across both the man and woman's topic; however, further analyses are needed in order to support this trend.

Book Eating Disorders and Marital Relationships

Download or read book Eating Disorders and Marital Relationships written by Jan Norre and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-04-19 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anorexia and bulimia are on the increase in the Western world and the disease is now recognised to no longer be only a problem for teenage girls, but older women as well. Most older women either do now or did previously live with a partner and much attention has been paid to these relationships in devising therapeutic regimes. Eating Disorders and Marital Relationships takes a critical look at the evidence behind the assumption of psychiatric illness in the patients and their partners and comes up with some surprising results. Van den Broucke, Vandereycken and Norre carefully describe both the theoretical and practical implications of their work, making this book important reading for both practitioner and researcher.
