Book Embodying Beauty

Download or read book Embodying Beauty written by Malin Pereira and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study argues that twentieth-century American women writers' textual representations of female beauty generally recognize a link between beauty standards and aesthetic ideology, exploring female beauty as a symptom of prevailing ideas about art and esthetics. Female beauty, in their texts, is not merely an issue of whether a female character is pretty or not; it is an expression of the controlling discourses negotiated by character, text, and author. In this study, therefore, the women writers' texts are read after interchapters outlining their key cultural and literary contexts. Revising Paul de Man's method of exploring scenes of reading, this study focuses on scenes of beauty in which a character, narrator, or speaker negotiates ideas about beauty. The author pairs Euro-American and African American women writers across the century in three generations: H.D. and Zora Neale Hurston; Gwendolyn Brooks and Sylvia Plath; and Toni Morrison and Louis Gluck. As such, this study offers a landmark black/white dialogue on female beauty in twentieth-century American culture and literature. Scenes of beauty in the texts of these writers suggest multiple feminine aesthetics in twentieth-century American writing, unified in their negotiation of the aesthetic ideologies embodied in female beauty.

Book Domestic Negotiations

Download or read book Domestic Negotiations written by Marci R. McMahon and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary study explores how US Mexicana and Chicana authors and artists across different historical periods and regions use domestic space to actively claim their own histories. Through “negotiation”—a concept that accounts for artistic practices outside the duality of resistance/accommodation—and “self-fashioning,” Marci R. McMahon demonstrates how the very sites of domesticity are used to engage the many political and recurring debates about race, gender, and immigration affecting Mexicanas and Chicanas from the early twentieth century to today. Domestic Negotiations covers a range of archival sources and cultural productions, including the self-fashioning of the “chili queens” of San Antonio, Texas, Jovita González’s romance novel Caballero, the home economics career and cookbooks of Fabiola Cabeza de Baca, Sandra Cisneros’s “purple house controversy” and her acclaimed text The House on Mango Street, Patssi Valdez’s self-fashioning and performance of domestic space in Asco and as a solo artist, Diane Rodríguez’s performance of domesticity in Hollywood television and direction of domestic roles in theater, and Alma López’s digital prints of domestic labor in Los Angeles. With intimate close readings, McMahon shows how Mexicanas and Chicanas shape domestic space to construct identities outside of gendered, racialized, and xenophobic rhetoric.

For millenniums he has used herbs and parts of plants for culinary, medicinal, and domestic purposes. Apart from the well-known traditional use for all manners of illnesses and ailments – I defy any person in the world who has not used some natural cure, natural remedy, or even natural beauty recipe in order to cure himself naturally, – herbs have also proven to be invaluable in many other different ways, when you take it in the domestic context. For centuries men have been using plants to provide shelter, fire material, floor coverings, roof coverings, and even utensils. Even today, in many parts of the world, the calabash is hollowed out and used as a container to store water as well as food. I have often used half of coconut shells in order to drink water, whenever I have gone trekking. Apart from this, herbs and plants have been used to provide color, decoration, flavor, and healthy benefits to a large number of our culinary preparations. This book is going to tell you how you can use natural herbs and plants to create a large number of products, that you can either sell outside in your neighborhood, city, or use at home. Many of these methods have been time-tested and have been used down the ages to provide us with useful items, even though we have half forgotten about how to make them, because it is so easy for us to get them off the supermarket shelf. Nevertheless, even if you do not use this book for providing you with items for sale, you can use it as a ready reference whenever you want to practice creating something naturally, profitably, and beneficial.

Book Have A Laugh My Friend Stinging with Love Collection of Prem Janmejay Satires

Download or read book Have A Laugh My Friend Stinging with Love Collection of Prem Janmejay Satires written by Prem Janmejay and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2024-09-04 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: R. K. Laxman immortalised the common man in his cartoons. Prem Janmejay's protagonist Radhelal is very similar to him. Like the average Indian, he does not understand much about the game of cricket but feels sad when the Indian team loses an international match and cheers up when it emerges victorious. Through him the satirist depicts the absurdity of cricket mania among those who look at the game more as a status symbol than anything else. Through Radhelal, the satirist takes a critical look at many of the things that trouble society, the overpowering effect of social media being one of them. However, Radhelal is not the only protagonist of this selection. Janmejay is careful to retain variety and therefore introduces a number of characters so that the perspective remains varied and the reader moves from one article to another, without complaining of monotony. The author confines his interest to urban topics, his favourites being politics and corruption. The language is simple; humour is conveyed through puns and skilful use of language.

Book Old Women and Art in the Early Modern Italian Domestic Interior

Download or read book Old Women and Art in the Early Modern Italian Domestic Interior written by Erin J. Campbell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though portraits of old women mediate cultural preoccupations just as effectively as those of younger women, the scant published research on images of older women belies their significance within early modern Italy. This study examines the remarkable flowering, largely overlooked in portraiture scholarship to date, of portraits of old women in Northern Italy and especially Bologna during the second half of the sixteenth century, when, as a result of religious reform, the lives of women and the family came under increasing scrutiny. Old Women and Art in the Early Modern Italian Domestic Interior draws on a wide range of primary visual sources, including portraits, religious images, architectural views, prints and drawings, as well as extant palazzi and case, furnishings, and domestic objects created by the leading artists in Bologna, including Lavinia Fontana, Bartolomeo Passerotti, Denys Calvaert, and the Carracci. The study also draws on an array of historical sources - including sixteenth-century theories of portraiture, prescriptive writings on women and the family, philosophical and practical treatises on the home economy, sumptuary legislation, books of secrets, prescriptive writings on old age, and household inventories - to provide new historical perspectives on the domestic life of the propertied classes in Bologna during the period. Author Erin Campbell contends that these images of unidentified women are not only crucial to our understanding of the cultural operations of art within the early modern world, but also, by working from the margins to revise the center, provide an opportunity to present new conceptual frameworks and question our assumptions about old age, portraiture, and the domestic interior.
