Book excerpt: "This study presents a conceptual design and cost estimate for a barge-mounted crude oil topping plant to be located adjacent to the Tuk Peninsula on the Beaufort Sea. This facility would produce primarily a marine diesel fuel for consumption by diesel and turbine-driven equipment associated with Dome Petroleum Limited's exploration operations in the Beaufort area. A small quantity of low-octane gasoline would also be produced concurrently with diesel fuel production. An alternate operation would allow the production of an aircraft turbine fuel in lieu of the diesel-gasoline operation. It is anticipated that the residuum from the Fuel Unit will eventually find a use in land-based power generating systems, or as a fuel for Dome's next-generation marine diesels or turbines. Additional residuum finishing operations, such as filtration or additive blending, may be required to satisfy engine/turbine applications. The conceptual design developed in this study is based on processing 5000 BPSD of Tarsuit Crude to produce approximately 3500 BPSD of marine diesel and approximately 150 BPSD of leaded motor gasoline. ... The crude topping facilities would operate in association with a large tanker which would be permanently moored near the topping unit and which would provide storage for crude oil and products (both distillates and residua). The topping unit is designed as a self-sufficient facility that would be fabricated on a single barge at a WestCoast location and then be transported fully-assembled to the operating site. ... this report also presents a preliminary engineering-construction schedule, a summary of requirements for fuel and consumables, estimated staffing requirements and a preliminary equipment layout plan.
