Book On the Canadian Dollar

Download or read book On the Canadian Dollar written by John Earl Floyd and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Preface: In addition to its insightful analysis of the public policy implications of the Canadian dollar, this monograph does much more. In Chapter 1 it sets the stage and presents a number of popular fallacious views about the dollar crisis. Chapter 2 examines recent trends in unemployment, inflation, domestic and foreign interest rates, and in the value of our dollar in terms of the U.S. dollar and other major currencies. Chapter 3 then proceeds with an analysis of the fundamental factors determining the international value of the Canadian dollar in the long run. The short-run factors determining the dollar's value are addressed in Chapter 4, followed by a discussion of the relationship between interest rates and the dollar in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 investigates the reasons for the most recent decline in the dollar and considers what, if anything, can and should be done about it. The final chapter deals with the question of whether we should be losing any sleep over the problems of the Canadian dollar.

Book Regional Perspectives on Dollarization in Canada

Download or read book Regional Perspectives on Dollarization in Canada written by Michel A. R. Beine and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we investigate whether it is preferable for Canadian regions to individually adopt the U.S. dollar or to remain with the current currency arrangement. The empirical analysis focuses on the cross-correlations of various business cycle measures of Canadian regions, of Canada, and of the United States. The business cycle investigation is completed by the analysis of two other important criteria for optimum currency areas, industrial specialization and trade interdependence. Our results highlight a significant heterogeneity across Canadian provinces. In particular, it transpires that it could be economically advantageous for the central provinces of Ontario and Quebec and to a lesser extent British Columbia to adopt the U.S. dollar. In contrast, it is not as clear what the other regions should do, the final answer depending on the path the larger three provinces take.

Book Monetary Integration and Dollarization

Download or read book Monetary Integration and Dollarization written by Matias Vernengo and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together an impressive and diverse group of authors to discuss its central theme: whether or not the dollarized international monetary system is sustainable in the context of the global economy it helped create. In addition to its uniquely well-rounded and comprehensive coverage of the issues, this lively and highly readable volume provides an accurate assessment of the lack of consensus in the current debate. A must read for anyone interested in currency crises and the increasing vulnerability of the dollar. Jane D Arista, Director of Progams, Financial Markets Center, US This book deals with the economic consequences of monetary integration, which has long been dominated by the Optimal Currency Area (OCA) paradigm. In this model, money is perceived as having developed from a private sector cost minimization process to facilitate transactions. Not surprisingly, the book argues, the main advantage of monetary integration in the OCA context is the reduction of transaction costs, yet the validity of OCA to analyze processes of monetary integration seems to be limited at best. The contributors in this volume try to go beyond the OCA model and understand the political economy of monetary integration by comparing the European Monetary Union with the dollarization (formal and informal) process in Latin America. The contributors, many of whom are leading lights, reflect the disagreements and the changing views on the proper monetary arrangements in a globalized world and suggest that monetary integration and dollarization are not the solution for the great majority of countries around the world. Monetary Integration and Dollarization brings together mainstream and heterodox views of monetary integration and uses the European and North American experiences as a guide for the discussion of dollarization in developing countries. It will appeal to scholars, researchers and policy makers in the fields of financial and international economics.

Book Towards North American Monetary Union

Download or read book Towards North American Monetary Union written by Eric Helleiner and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2006 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many believe that Canada's deepening economic integration with the United States and the worldwide trend towards currency blocs will eventually lead to a North American monetary union. In the first detailed analysis of Canadian exchange rate politics, Eric Helleiner challenges this view.Helleiner finds little support in the US for the concessions that would be necessary to make a North American monetary union palatable in Canada. Comparing the US Federal Reserve and the European Monetary Union, he argues that Canada would exercise far less influence within a North American monetary union than individual countries do within the European community. He also analyses the seemingly paradoxical support of Quebec sovereignists for free trade and monetary union.Towards North American Monetary Union'explores Canada's unusually strong commitment throughout the twentieth century to a floating exchange rate for its national currency - a commitment that Heilleiner argues is likely to endure.

Book Exchange rate Regimes

Download or read book Exchange rate Regimes written by Canada. Parliamentary Research Branch and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-term depreciation of the Canadian dollar against the US dollar has caused increasing concern that the low dollar is adversely affecting productivity and Canadians' standard of living. Consequently, those who criticize floating rates for Canada have suggested considering greater exchange-rate fixity with the US dollar, including the options of dollarization or adoption of a common, possibly North American, currency. This paper explains the effects of the exchange rate on the economy and sets out the pros and cons for the spectrum of possible exchange-rate regimes, including fixed rates, floating rates, and intermediate systems.

Book excerpt: Trading at a premium to the U.S. dollar in the early 1970s, it was not until the Bretton Woods system of pegged exchange rates collapsed under the strains of the Viet Nam war in 1972, that brought a sudden state of chaos to the historical relationship between the two North American dollars. As a series of Free Trade Agreements negotiated in the 1990s raised Canada's dependence on one of the largest free markets in the world, the Canadian dollar appeared increasingly vulnerable to Canadian industrial and trade policy. As one of the world's oldest currencies challenges its all-time historical lows, a vital debate rages over the benefits of having just one major currency spanning both the U.S. and Canada. This book presents a concise "living history" of the economic and financial life of Canada during one of the most revolutionary decades in modem memory (1990-2000).
