Book Hats Caps Bonnets 1855 1875

Download or read book Hats Caps Bonnets 1855 1875 written by Marianne Burke and published by Reverie Publishing. This book was released on 2008-12 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this remarkable book, costumer and researcher Marianne Burke presents a richly illustrated study of headwear in the twenty-year period between 1855-1875. Her detailed discussion of the development of hair and headwear styles throughout this era is accompanied by period photographs known as cartes de visite, as well as numerous illustrations from fashion periodicals of the time such as Godey's Lady's Book, Harper's Bazar and Peterson's Magazine. It was during these years that the luxurious French lady dolls, so ardently collected today, assumed their great popularity. Collectors of these dolls have long been frustrated by the lack of accessible instructions and patterns for headwear for their elegant models. This is the first book to teach methods of constructing historically correct hats, caps and bonnets for French fashion dolls of the mid-to-late nineteenth century. The methods of assembly taught pertain to styles for dolls of more contemporary periods, as well. Ms. Burke offers instruction in the practical matters of millinery construction; chapters on tools, materials, making bonnet frames and working with straw and felt provide step-by step directions and culminate in the presentation of twelve fully illustrated patterns for making hats, caps and bonnets for lady dolls. Doll costumers, restorers and collectors will find this invaluable compendium an essential resource, while lovers of fashion history will revel in its visual delights.

Download or read book Villette written by Roya Nourizadeh and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2021-07-07 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a family catastrophe strikes, Lucy Snowe leaves England to teach English in a small Belgian town. Immediately after arriving in Villette, Lucy is drawn into the town’s charm, adventure, and romance. Brontë’s characteristic episodes of social challenges, meticulous creation of intimacy, and realism make ‘Villette’ a wonderfully passionate and psychological novel. Charlotte Brontë’s unromantic view on the world around her, and her outspoken opinions make this novel perfect for fans of Virginia Woolf’s ‘Miss Dalloway’. Charlotte Brontë (1816-1855) was the eldest of the Brontë sisters, born to a family of six children. Her childhood was defined by difficulties at school, and she became a governess for her younger sisters at age 14. She was catapulted onto the literary main stage by her signature realistic, pragmatic, and unromantic commentaries on the state of the world around her in her novel Jane Eyre, which has been successfully adapted to film many times. Her other notable works include ‘Shirley’, ‘The Professor’, and ‘Villette’.

Book Cutting for All

Download or read book Cutting for All written by Kevin L. Seligman and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Containing 2,729 entries, Kevin L. Seligman’s bibliography concentrates on books, manuals, journals, and catalogs covering a wide range of sartorial approaches over nearly five hundred years. After a historical overview, Seligman approaches his subject chronologically, listing items by century through 1799, then by decade. In this section, he deals with works on flat patterning, draping, grading, and tailoring techniques as well as on such related topics as accessories, armor, civil costumes, clerical costumes, dressmakers’ systems, fur, gloves, leather, military uniforms, and undergarments. Seligman then devotes a section to those American and English journals published for the professional tailor and dressmaker. Here, too, he includes the related areas of fur and undergarments. A section devoted to journal articles features selected articles from costume- and noncostumerelated professional journals and periodicals. The author breaks these articles down into three categories: American, English, and other. Seligman then devotes separate sections to other related areas, providing alphabetical listings of books and professional journals for costume and dance, dolls, folk and national dress, footwear, millinery, and wigmaking and hair. A section devoted to commercial pattern companies, periodicals, and catalogs is followed by an appendix covering pattern companies, publishers, and publications. In addition to full bibliographic notation, Seligman provides a library call number and library location if that information is available. The majority of the listings are annotated. Each listing is coded for identification and cross-referencing. An author index, a title index, a subject index, and a chronological index will guide readers to the material they want. Seligman’s historical review of the development of publications on the sartorial arts, professional journals, and the commercial paper pattern industry puts the bibliographical material into context. An appendix provides a cross-reference guide for research on American and English pattern companies, publishers, and publications. Given the size and scope of the bibliography, there is no other reference work even remotely like it.

Book American Milliners and their World

Download or read book American Milliners and their World written by Nadine Stewart and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of millinery tend to focus on hats, rather than the extraordinarily skilled workers who create them. American Milliners and their World sets out to redress the balance, examining the position of the milliner in American society from the 18th to the 20th century. Concentrating on the struggle of female hat-makers to claim their social place, it investigates how they were influenced by changing attitudes towards women in the workplace. Drawing on diaries, etiquette books, trade journals and contemporary literature, Stewart illustrates how making hats became big business, but milliners' working conditions failed to improve. Taking the reader from the Industrial Revolution of the 1760s to the sexual revolution of the 1960s, and from Belle Epoque feathers to elegant cloches and Jackie Kennedy's pillbox hat, the book offers a new insight into the rise and fall of a fashionable industry. Beautifully illustrated and packed with original research, American Milliners and their World blends fashion history and anthropology to tell the forgotten stories of the women behind some of the most iconic hats of the last three centuries.
