Book excerpt: This seminal volume—produced in close collaboration with his estate—is the official, most comprehensive reference of Robert Doisneau’s photographs of Paris. Robert Doisneau infused images of daily life with poetic nuance. This unique portrait of Paris in 560 photographs is reissued in hardcover with red-tipped pages. This entrancing tour through the gardens of Paris, along the Seine, and among crowds of Parisians includes children scrambling to cross rue de Rivoli, fresh-faced accordionists, elegant dog walkers, brave resistance fighters, exuberant roller skaters, the indelible kiss in front of the Hôtel de Ville, and cyclists beneath the Eiffel Tower. The magic of Paris in black and white is timeless. Photographs curated by Doisneau’s daughters and complemented by Doisneau’s own commentary reveal his profound fascination with the city where he lived and worked.

Book excerpt: During the golden age when Montparnasse was teeming with artists, Robert Doisneau gained remarkable access to the artists working in Paris from 1937 onwards, and he visited their studios and caught them in various private moments: working, reflecting, and even playing with their children. This book, which includes some previously unpublished photographs, shares Doisneau's intimate view on the work and lives of these artists. Many remain famous--Picasso, David Hockney, Jasper Johns, Giacometti, Saul Steinberg, Marcel Duchamp, Le Corbusier, Foujita--while others have fallen into obscurity, perhaps one day to be rediscovered. Regardless of the artist's social status--whether major figure of the day or struggling newcomer--Doisneau approached each subject with the same humble eye. His signature black-and-white photographs capture the nostalgia of the period and bear witness to these artists in the act of creating some of the world's finest art. This book, published in cooperation with Doisneau's daughters, is a fascinating document of the daily lives of artists by one of the world's most famous and popular photographers.

Book Blast Furnaces

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bernd Becher
  • Publisher : MIT Press (MA)

  • Pages : 223 pages

Download or read book Blast Furnaces written by Bernd Becher and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1990 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Typological, repetitive, at times oddly humorous, Bernd and Hilla Becher's photographs of industrial structures are, in their cumulative effect, profoundly moving. The Becher's serenely cool, disarmingly objective, and notoriously obsessive images of watertowers, gas tanks, grain elevators, blast furnaces, and mine heads have been taken over a period of almost thirty years, under overcast skies, with a view camera that captures each detail and tonality of wood, concrete, brick, and steel. Blast Furnaces represents a continuation of, but also a counterpoint to the Bechers' earlier book Watertowers. There basic functional elements were hidden or clothed in disguises, whereas the 256 duotone prints included here record a purely functional and exposed architecture, built to contain heat, pressure, and accumulations of gases and unhindered by any outside constraints. The blast furnace is the symbol of the steel industry. Like other building types which attract the Bechers, it is also an endangered industrial species. Essentially giant, cone-shaped circular stoves, blast furnaces dominate the cityscapes of Pittsburgh, Youngstown, and Birmingham much as religious structures dominated medieval cities. These photographs, taken between 1961 and 1989, convey the unique characteristics, physical complexity, and eerie presence in the landscape of blast furnaces in Great Britain, Belgium, France, Austria, Germany, and the United States. Bernd and Hilla Becher teach at the Dusseldorf Art Academy. They began their collaborative photographic enterprise in 1957, when they did a study of workers' houses in their native Germany. The Bechers follow in a distinguished line of German photographers that includes August Sander, Albert Renger-Patzsch, and Werner Manz, all of whom contributed in different ways to the definition of "objective" photography. A selection of their photographs is on view throughout 1990 at the Dia Art Foundation galleries in New York, and they will represent Germany in the 1990 Venice Biennale.

Book Picasso Braque L ger

Download or read book Picasso Braque L ger written by Minneapolis Institute of Arts and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The current exhibition had its genesis in casual conversation several years ago with Ernst Beyeler of Basel, Switzerland, and his American liaison, Kurt Delbanco. The proposal was advanced that Beyeler might be willing to lend a selection of works for exhibition in the United States. Originally some two dozen paintings by Picasso were selected by the museums, but this past summer, as enthusiasm for the exhibition mounted, the number of works increased dramatically. Braque and Léger were added both to complement and contrast with the works by Picasso, and several private Swiss collectors were persuaded to lend works to help fill in certain gaps. The final result was a selection of eighty-three works that well represented the diverse careers of Picasso, Braque and Léger." -- Foreword.

Book Lost Loose and Loved

Download or read book Lost Loose and Loved written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This broad collective exhibition reflects the vitality and vivacity of the art scene in all its complexity, displaying the different creative trends which took hold in the city inside and outside the School of Paris at a time of fervent political debate, held to the backdrop of the new global stage opened by the Cold War. From a broad array of artistic fields, from painting and sculpture to jazz, literature and film, foreign artists dealt with mounting tension by bringing their approaches and hopes to the Parisian milieu in an attempt to connect with the tradition of international modernism but without losing a grip on their own cultural identity.

Book Constructions of Cultural Identities in Newsreel Cinema and Television after 1945

Download or read book Constructions of Cultural Identities in Newsreel Cinema and Television after 1945 written by Kornelia Imesch and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2016-12-31 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newsreel cinema and television not only served as an important tool in the shaping of political spheres and the construction of national and cultural identities up to the 1960s. Today's potent televisual forms were furthermore developed in and strongly influenced by newsreels, and much of the archived newsreel footage is repeatedly used to both illustrate and re-stage past events and their significance. This book addresses newsreel cinema and television as a medium serving the formation of cultural identities in a variety of national contexts after 1945, its role in forming audiovisual narratives of a »biopic of the nation«, and the technical, aesthetical, and political challenges of archiving and restaging cinematic and televisual newsreel.

Book Kiss And Tell

Download or read book Kiss And Tell written by Julie Enfield and published by HarperCollins Publishers. This book was released on 2004-02-02 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Everything begins with a kiss. We are born in our parents’ first kiss and our earliest memories are of our mother’s fond kisses. Kisses come on kisses, and of the kisses that follow none seems more intense than our first romantic kiss. We are kissed by fortune, by love. We shape our most potent desires with our lips. Kisses are the electric gates of love and passion. Like summer lightning, kisses dance, they wriggle, they slip away.” Did kissing originate as a by-product of “pre-mastication,” that is, the transfer of a mother’s soft, prechewed food into the mouth of her infant? Does a pooch—or any other animal—smooch? Can a mother’s kiss symbolically suck out the evil force that is causing her child pain? How is a sniff-kiss different from a mouth kiss? And how does a lipstick’s rosy hue harken back to a woman’s subconscious labial awareness? These tantalizing questions and many more are answered in Kiss and Tell, the first comprehensive book to embrace the subject of kissing in sensuous detail. Author and journalist Julie Enfield offers us a panoply of kisses, from the celebrated French kiss to the unforgettable first kiss. She explores how each of our five senses enhances and informs a kiss, and reveals the sometimes surprising chemistry behind desire. From a fascinating exposé of literary, film, and artistic kisses to a lush landscape of lipstick and iconic pouts, this playfully designed and beautifully packaged book is the ultimate guide to lip reading —and a perfect gift of love.
