Book Doing Good with Technologies

Download or read book Doing Good with Technologies written by Katinka Waelbers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-27 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 20th century technologies like cars, the Internet, and the contraceptive pill have altered our actions, changed our perceptions and influenced our moral ideas, for better and worse. Upcoming technologies are bound to fulfill their own unique social roles. How can we advance this social role so that it will support the good live and limit undesired changes? This book explores whether we can take a forward looking responsibility to optimize the social roles of technologies. In doing so, the book discusses three issues: first, it aims to understand the social role of technologies; second, it explores what it means to accept responsibility for this social role, and; third, it searches for some forward looking tools that help us to see how new technologies may influence human behavior. In a rather unique approach, this book combines the influential sociological research of Bruno Latour on the social impacts of technologies with the contemporary Aristotelianism of Alasdair MacIntyre.

Book Recent Advances in Technologies for Inclusive Well Being

Download or read book Recent Advances in Technologies for Inclusive Well Being written by Anthony Lewis Brooks and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-16 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a time of ongoing pandemic when well-being is a priority this volume presents latest works across disciplines associated to Virtual Patients, Gamification and Simulation. Chapters herein present international perspectives with authors from around the globe contributing to this impactful third edition to the series following a 2014 Springer book on Technologies for Inclusive Well-Being and a 2017 Springer book Recent Advances in Technologies for Inclusive Well-Being. Digital technologies are pervasive in life and the contributions herein focus on specific attributes and situations, especially in training and treatment programmes spanning across ranges of diagnosis, conditions, ages, and targeted impacts. This volume purposefully does not cover all (even if that was possible) aspects on how virtual interactive space can align to statial computing, which in turn can align with related embodied entities (whatever the terms used e.g. Virtual, Augmented, Extended, Mixed Realities) along with AI, Deep Learning etc. It also doesn’t cover what some may refer to as ‘trendy terms’ such as 360 degree, video, WebXR, cryptocurrency, blockchain, virtual goods, AR museums, travel and teleportation...however, what is covered in this book, and the prior volumes it builds upon (as above), is a sharing and questioning of advancing technologies for inclusive well-being through research and practices from an avant-garde perspective.

Book excerpt: The instant New York Times bestseller! A Wall Street Journal Best Science Book of the Year! A Popular Science Best Science Book of the Year! From a top scientist and the creator of the hugely popular web comic Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal, a hilariously illustrated investigation into future technologies -- from how to fling a ship into deep space on the cheap to 3D organ printing What will the world of tomorrow be like? How does progress happen? And why do we not have a lunar colony already? What is the hold-up? In this smart and funny book, celebrated cartoonist Zach Weinersmith and noted researcher Dr. Kelly Weinersmith give us a snapshot of what's coming next -- from robot swarms to nuclear fusion powered-toasters. By weaving their own research, interviews with the scientists who are making these advances happen, and Zach's trademark comics, the Weinersmiths investigate why these technologies are needed, how they would work, and what is standing in their way. New technologies are almost never the work of isolated geniuses with a neat idea. A given future technology may need any number of intermediate technologies to develop first, and many of these critical advances may appear to be irrelevant when they are first discovered. The journey to progress is full of strange detours and blind alleys that tell us so much about the human mind and the march of civilization. To this end, Soonish investigates ten different emerging fields, from programmable matter to augmented reality, from space elevators to robotic construction, to show us the amazing world we will have, you know, soonish. Soonish is the perfect gift for science lovers for the holidays!

Book Technology and Psychological Well being

Download or read book Technology and Psychological Well being written by Yair Amichai-Hamburger and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-09-10 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the modern world we are surrounded by technology. Gadgets such as cell phones, portable computers, and electronic diaries accompany us throughout the day. But is this a good thing? Are we being served by these technological wonders, or have we become enslaved by them? Does constant availability via technology make us more efficient or more stressed? Is our ability to connect with others all over the world, day or night, making us more sociable or turning us into recluses in a virtual world? This book considers the impact of technology on the different spheres of our life - work, home, family and leisure - and assesses ways in which to build better communication between technology developers and society to ensure that technology enhances our lives and psychological well-being, rather than damaging them.

Book Technology and the Good Life

Download or read book Technology and the Good Life written by Eric Higgs and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can we use technology in the pursuit of a good life, or are we doomed to having our lives organized and our priorities set by the demands of machines and systems? How can philosophy help us to make technology a servant rather than a master? Technology and the Good Life? uses a careful collective analysis of Albert Borgmann's controversial and influential ideas as a jumping-off point from which to address questions such as these about the role and significance of technology in our lives. Contributors both sympathetic and critical examine Borgmann's work, especially his "device paradigm"; apply his theories to new areas such as film, agriculture, design, and ecological restoration; and consider the place of his thought within philosophy and technology studies more generally. Because this collection carefully investigates the issues at the heart of how we can take charge of life with technology, it will be a landmark work not just for philosophers of technology but for students and scholars in the many disciplines concerned with science and technology studies.

Book How Good Manners Migration Technology and Concentration Affects Our Lives Four Books Collection

Download or read book How Good Manners Migration Technology and Concentration Affects Our Lives Four Books Collection written by Matt Green and published by Matt Green. This book was released on with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: his eBook on How Good Manners, Migration,Technology and Concentration Affects Our Lives, written by the author is certainly worth reading. How Good Manners Affects Our Lives? Manners determine a relationship and that relationship is either affectionate or unfriendly depending on how the manner is presented. As we become a responsible parents for our children, we discipline them with the good manners we grew up learning, and hence they become their own discipline. Good manners have a variety of ways in affecting us in a community that can present physically or emotionally. Migration has been with us since time immemorial. As people search for countries that offer high wages, they also affect national security, the spread of diseases, brain drain and globalization. In all, using the concepts of social construction, definition of reality by the powerful and hegemony, we will then be able to properly and sufficiently discuss the effects of migration to interstate relations. Why We Are So Dependent On Technology? Have we ever thought that where does the future of humanity and earth lies after a few decades? How much positive are we extracting from our modern technological and scientific advancements? How the body and mind are directly influenced against each other? How we can take advantage of this? The attention given to the present seems to be the least among many people and it has a devastating effect on people’s lives. The mind did not come with our birth, it came later as a creation of our addiction to the past and the future. Grab your copy now!

Book Persistent Work related Technology Use Recovery and Well being Processes

Download or read book Persistent Work related Technology Use Recovery and Well being Processes written by Lenka Ďuranová and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-15 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this work is to provide insight into the process of employee recovery and well-being in regard to work-related ICT use during after-hours. Therefore, we discuss (1) theories that help us to understand the determinants and outcomes of this behavior, (2) our core concepts recovery and well-being, and (3) previous empirical findings on ICT use after hours for work purposes. On the basis of literature review, we propose a new conceptual overall framework of ICT use after hours for work purposes with the focus on employee recovery and well-being processes. Thereby, we posit ICT use after hours for work purposes as potential stressor, resource, or demand (see action theory by Hacker, 1998, 2003; Frese and Zapf 1994), depending on many personal and environmental factors, but primarily on cognitive appraisals (see transactional model of stress by Lazarus and Folkman 1984). This three-way division enables us to propose various linear and non-linear associations to focused outcomes. We conclude with an overall discussion on further research concerning the identified research gaps.
