Book excerpt: "We live in an age when people can't seem to tell the difference between a dog and a dog-house." So goes the comparison made by Andy Decker in his newly released Dogs & Doghouses, Rethinking "Church". Considering the contemporary Christian landscape, and using the Bible as the, "sole rule of faith," are we prepared to dismiss as unnecessary tradition many of the things we take for granted when going to what has come to be called church? When you pick up this book prepare to have your thinking on what it means to be a Christian challenged in a direct and significant manner. When you are finished you will have been asked serious questions about not only what you believe, but more importantly, why you believe those things. Decker takes the reader to task on many levels emphasizing the whole while that we should indeed love the Lord with not only our hearts and souls, but with our minds as well. The book and its many comparisons are based on the simple premise that the Bible should be the basis of Christianity. Anything else needs to be considered well-intentioned extras (at best) or superstitious idolatry (at worst). Decker offers three broad areas of topics (what is a church, the roles and responsibilities of church leadership, and how a Christian should give) only after providing an up-front list of assumptions that allow us to hear his biases from the first chapter. The final three chapters will impress the reader to apply what he or she has just read. He urges a resetting of the ancient landmarks that are often missing from today's Christian lives. Daring to use the idea of "a correct worship," in an age of, "here's what it means to me," Decker reminds us that the Bible means something and that the beginning of wisdom is still the fear of the Lord; that repentance still means setting aside what lives in the unrepentant heart for the better ways found in the scriptures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Build a Doghouse That's Just Right for Your Dog! While your dog may be a full-fledged member of the family, there are times when you must put him or her outdoors. Some dogs, for example, become over enthusiastically friendly when visitors appear, even to the point of knocking down your unsuspecting guests. Other dogs enjoy having some time to themselves in the backyard. Whatever the reason that shepherds the dog out the door, a nearby doghouse within a fenced-in area provides a protected, private space for your dog and peace of mind for you. A proper doghouse is a canine retreat, a place where your dog can hide from the hot sun, the cold rain, the harsh wind, and the worries of the world. Mary Twitchell takes you through all the options for building or buying a comfortable and cozy shelter for your canine companion. Whether you want to modify a barrel, buy a molded plastic shelter, or build a wooden doghouse, you'll find all the information you need right here, from choosing the right site to proper building techniques to encouraging your dog to use the new doghouse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dogs now dominate the $48 billion a year pet business, with nearly 40 percent of American households owning a total of 77.5 million dogs. Dog products, dog services, dog admiration - okay, let's call it dog worship - has become totally over the top. If you have a dog-obsessed friend or relative, you've seen the phenomenon. Or maybe you're a dog owner and lover, and have found yourself buying, doing, craving, needing dog-related items (doggie treadmills, dog swimming pools, caffeine-free doggie java) and services (doggie massage, dog perfume, aromatherapy, hair coloring, and yes, doggie tattoos) that would have seemed outlandish a generation ago when applied to your everyday household Rover. But Rover isn't called Rover anymore, he's called Rufus. Or Lola, according to the Tumblog Hipster Puppies. In fact, all Top Ten Dog Names are people names. And the canine Rufus doesn't stay home alone all day; he goes to Doggie Daycare. Eats brightly-frosted martini-shaped doggie treats. Wears designer tutus. Gets married on the beach. Has... Well, you'll see. Rabid is a catalog of how over-the-top our dog obsession had become. It's a book aimed not only at dog skeptics but at dog lovers and the people who love them. Funny, fun, yet holding a mirror up to our dog-centered society, Rabid will help us laugh at our own behavior and at the even-more-insane antics of all those other dog people. And it will give some solace to the 60 percent of us who've so far evaded America's dog mania. Photos throughout.

Book Art and Art Attempts

Download or read book Art and Art Attempts written by Christy Mag Uidhir and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-06-27 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although few philosophers agree about what it is for something to be art, most, if not all, agree on one thing: art must be in some sense intention dependent. Art and Art Attempts is about what follows from taking intention dependence seriously as a substantive necessary condition for something's being art. Christy Mag Uidhir argues that from the assumption that art must be the product of intentional action, along with basic action-theoretic account of attempts (goal-oriented intention-directed activity), follows a host of sweeping implications for philosophical enquiry into the nature of art and its principal relata such as authorship, art forms, and art ontology: e.g., · An informative distinction between art, non-art, and failed-art that any viable theory of art must capture. · A far more productive minimal framework for authorship not only capable of systematically addressing issues of collective authorship appropriation, etc. but also one according to which artists just are authors. · A coherent and structurally precise account of art forms based upon the relation between artists, artworks, and the sortal properties thereof. · A unified and far less metaphysically suspect ontology of art according to which if there are such things as artworks, then artworks must be concrete things. Ultimately, Mag Uidhir aims neither to propose nor to defend any particular, precise answer to the question "What is art?" Instead, he shows the ways in which taking intention-dependence seriously as a substantive necessary condition for being art can be profoundly revelatory, and perhaps even radically revisionary, as to the scope and limits of what any particular, precise answer to such a question could viably be.

Book Visible Learning for Mathematics Grades K 12

Download or read book Visible Learning for Mathematics Grades K 12 written by John Hattie and published by Corwin Press. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rich tasks, collaborative work, number talks, problem-based learning, direct instruction…with so many possible approaches, how do we know which ones work the best? In Visible Learning for Mathematics, six acclaimed educators assert it’s not about which one—it’s about when—and show you how to design high-impact instruction so all students demonstrate more than a year’s worth of mathematics learning for a year spent in school. That’s a high bar, but with the amazing K-12 framework here, you choose the right approach at the right time, depending upon where learners are within three phases of learning: surface, deep, and transfer. This results in “visible” learning because the effect is tangible. The framework is forged out of current research in mathematics combined with John Hattie’s synthesis of more than 15 years of education research involving 300 million students. Chapter by chapter, and equipped with video clips, planning tools, rubrics, and templates, you get the inside track on which instructional strategies to use at each phase of the learning cycle: Surface learning phase: When—through carefully constructed experiences—students explore new concepts and make connections to procedural skills and vocabulary that give shape to developing conceptual understandings. Deep learning phase: When—through the solving of rich high-cognitive tasks and rigorous discussion—students make connections among conceptual ideas, form mathematical generalizations, and apply and practice procedural skills with fluency. Transfer phase: When students can independently think through more complex mathematics, and can plan, investigate, and elaborate as they apply what they know to new mathematical situations. To equip students for higher-level mathematics learning, we have to be clear about where students are, where they need to go, and what it looks like when they get there. Visible Learning for Math brings about powerful, precision teaching for K-12 through intentionally designed guided, collaborative, and independent learning.
