Download or read book Does It Hurt When I Press Here written by Willy M Black and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-10-06 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we go to a hospital, we have the illusion that everything is perfectly organised, like infallible computer software running in the background, checking that everything is running with military precision. The aim of this book is to break deep into that delusion and to give you a better understanding of how things really work. Mainly in the Emergency Department, but with a glimpse into the whole of the National Health Service machinery. What if I told you that the trolley you were examined on had not been wiped after the previous patient had laid on it without underwear, perhaps to be catheterised or to have a rectal examination performed? Did you know that the pulsioxymeter, that little finger clip with a red light that measures your heart rate and oxygenation, was used right before you on a patient that was covered in faeces and no one had the time to disinfect it before putting it on your finger? In this book you will find some disturbing facts about the National Health Service and its Emergency Departments. Some of these facts will hopefully leave you sympathising with the health care workers, while others will break the illusion of a well-oiled machine and make you see the truth behind the mirage. Clapping for the NHS is all very good, but the truth is that it does not solve any of its problems. I am hoping that by reading this book you will find out what we can all collectively do to make things, and consequently the whole system, better.

Book excerpt: "This is a book I didn't want to end. I dreamed about the characters for days afterward." —TESS GERRITSEN, New York Times bestselling author of Last to Die We know Medea killed her children.... Or do we? In Medea, Kerry Greenwood breathes fresh life into the age of heroes and rescues a woman wronged by ancient playwrights and history. As priestess of Hekate, Princess Medea protects the sacred grove holding the Golden Fleece and bones of an old king. Jason arrives determined to acquire both and rule the land. The king sets up challenges which Jason must conquer to earn the throne. But Jason's gentian blue eyes and hair bright as gold thread obsess Medea—"here is love, here is joy"—compelling her to help him. When the king breaks his word and seeks to kill the two, they escape together. Through Medea's royal line, Jason becomes king of Corinth, swearing always to love his wife and queen. But his allegiance is fleeting. Medea has sacrificed home, family, goddess, and innocence for the "melting, fiery loving" she feels for him. What comes next? The answer lies in this compelling story of tragedy, vengeance, exile, grief, and an oracle's response to one returning to worship the dark after having fallen in love with the light.

Download or read book What Can I Do When Everything s On Fire A Novel written by António Lobo Antunes and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2008-09-17 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A soaring, symphonic epic by the Portuguese master novelist, considered to be the "heir to Conrad and Faulkner" (George Steiner). The razor-thin line between reality and madness is transgressed in this Faulknerian masterpiece, António Lobo Antunes's first novel to appear in English in five years. What Can I Do When Everything's On Fire?, set in the steamy world of Lisbon's demimonde—a nightclub milieu of scorching intensity and kaleidoscopic beauty, a baleful planet populated by drag queens, clowns, and drug addicts—is narrated by Paolo, the son of Lisbon's most legendary transvestite, who searches for his own identity as he recalls the harrowing death of his father, Carlos; the life of Carlos's lover, Rui, a heroin addict and suicide; as well as the other denizens of this hallucinatory world. Psychologically penetrating, pregnant with literary symbolism, and deeply sympathetic in its depiction of society's dregs, Lobo Antunes's novel ventriloquizes the voices of the damned in a poetic masterwork that recalls Joyce's Ulysses with a dizzying farrago of urban images few readers will forget.
