Download or read book Siege 13 written by Tamas Dobozy and published by Dundurn.com. This book was released on 2012-09-15 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2012 Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize — Winner 2012 Governor General’s Literary Award — Finalist, English-Language Fiction In December of 1944, the Red Army entered Budapest to begin one of the bloodiest sieges of the Second World War. By February, the siege was over, but its effects were to be felt for decades afterward. Siege 13 is a collection of thirteen linked stories about this terrible time in history, both its historical moment, but also later, as a legacy of silence, haunting, and trauma that shadows the survivors. Set in both Budapest before and after the siege, and in the present day – in Canada, the U.S., and parts of Europe – Siege 13 traces the ripple effect of this time on characters directly involved, and on their friends, associates, sons, daughters, grandchildren, and adoptive countries. Written by one of this country’s best and most internationally recognized short story authors – the story "The Restoration of the Villa Where Tibor Kallman Once Lived" won the 2011 O. Henry Prize for short fiction – Siege 13 is an intelligent, emotional, and absorbing cycle of stories about war, family, loyalty, love and redemption.
Download or read book Slave stories written by Gunvor Simonsen and published by Aarhus Universitetsforlag. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Danish West Indies, hundreds of enslaved men and women and a handful of Danish judges engaged in a broken, often distorted dialogue in court. Their dialogue was shaped by a shared concern with the ways slavery clashed with sexual norms and family life. Some enslaved men and women crafted respectable Christian self-portraits, which in time allowed victims of sexual abuse and rape to publicly narrate their experiences. Other slaves stressed African-Atlantic traditions when explaining their domestic conflicts. Yet these gripping stories did not influence the legal system. While the judges cunningly embraced slave testimony, they also reached guilty verdicts in most trials and punished with extreme brutality. Slaves spoke, but mostly to no avail. In Slave Stories, Gunvor Simonsen reconstructs the narratives crafted by slaves and traces the distortions instituted by Danish West Indian legal practice. In doing so, she draws us closer to the men and women who lived in bondage in the Danish West Indies (present-day US Virgin Islands) in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

This book was released on 2022-01-13 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible contains the greatest story ever told. It reveals the God of history, who is writing his story through history’s events. It tells us about life, and it itself is life. It tells us about Jesus, God’s Son, who secured salvation for a lost world two thousand years ago. Maybe you’ve tried to read the Bible all the way through before and didn’t finish. Maybe you need a tool to guide you in your journey. That’s what we hope this book will be for you. The Bible is sixty-six books, yet it is one book with one story. It was written over 1,500 years ago, but with one theme—Jesus! The Bible has forty human authors, but one divine author and one central story. It invites us into that story to embrace the life God designed for us. Scripture’s Grand Story can help people with little Bible knowledge achieve a basic framework for grasping the Bible’s main story. Those with a basic understanding of Scripture will benefit by seeing how each story plays a part in the one central story—Jesus.
