After decomposing the Space S & T design lifecycle into phases, design milestones and activities using process models, a set of DoDAF prescribed and Fit-for-Purpose views are constructed into a reference implementation of a system architecture. This approach attempts to make DoDAF2.0 more relevant and integrated with S & T missions and the decisions that are encountered.

Understanding the relation between requirements and architecture is important because the requirements, be they explicit or implicit, represent the function, whereas the architecture determines the form. While changes to a set of requirements may impact on the realization of the architecture, choices made for an architectural solution may impact on requirements, e.g., in terms of revising functional or non-functional requirements that cannot actually be met. Although research in both requirements engineering and software architecture is quite active, it is in their combination that understanding is most needed and actively sought. Effectively managing such a large and complex endeavor requires, among other things, a well-defined and enforced blueprint for operational and technological change, commonly referred to as an enterprise architecture. Such an architecture provides a clear and comprehensive picture of an entity, whether it is an organization (e.g., federal department, agency, or bureau) or a functional or mission area that cuts across more than one organization (e.g., financial management or combat identification 1). This picture consists of three integrated components: a snapshot of the enterprise s current operational and technological environment, a snapshot of its target environment, and a capital investment road map for transitioning from the current to the target environment. The use of enterprise architectures is a best practice in information technology (IT) management followed by leading public and private organizations and is required by the Clinger-Cohen Act of 1996, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), and DOD. 2 Our experience with federal agencies has shown that attempting a major modernization effort without a complete and enforceable enterprise architecture results in systems that are duplicative, are not well integrated, are unnecessarily.

Traditionally, fuzzy rules are generated from human expert knowledge or human heuristics for relatively simple systems. In the last few years, data-driven fuzzy rule generation has been very active. Compared to heuristic fuzzy rules, fuzzy rules generated from data are able to extract more profound knowledge for more complex systems. This book presents a number of approaches to the generation of fuzzy rules from data, ranging from the direct fuzzy inference based to neural net works and evolutionary algorithms based fuzzy rule generation. Besides the approximation accuracy, special attention has been paid to the interpretabil ity of the extracted fuzzy rules. In other words, the fuzzy rules generated from data are supposed to be as comprehensible to human beings as those generated from human heuristics. To this end, many aspects of interpretabil ity of fuzzy systems have been discussed, which must be taken into account in the data-driven fuzzy rule generation. In this way, fuzzy rules generated from data are intelligible to human users and therefore, knowledge about unknown systems can be extracted.
