Book excerpt: First published in 1975, The Rhodesian Problem presents a documentary record of Rhodesia from the establishment of the Crown colony in 1923 to the illegal declaration of independence in 1965 and the post-independence efforts for a settlement of the conflict. The documents chart the gradual development of conflict between the ruling white minority and the black majority. They illustrate the methods adopted by the Smith government to maintain effective power in the face of United Nations and British government sanctions and increasing opposition from the indigenous black population. The main objectives of Rhodesian policy during the period under review were the achievement of independence from Britain; the expansion to the north to create a ‘greater Rhodesia’ dominion in central Africa, including the wealth of the Copperbelt; and the preservation of a society in which white minority rule was based upon a system of rigid racial segregation. There are over 60 documents, ranging from the Buxton committee report of 1921 through to an estimate of the contemporary situation by Peter Niesewand, the journalist who was imprisoned by the Smith regime in 1973. They cover many shades of opinion including UN resolutions, official Rhodesian government propaganda, and statements from the African opposition, and the collection provides overall a dramatic account of the Rhodesian problem. This book will be of interest to students and researchers of history and international politics.

This book argues that whilst the overriding purpose of counter-insurgency is political the actual campaign is invariably seen as military. The expense, death and trauma of the military action usually mean that political purposes come a poor second in terms of popular and governmental aims. Rhodesia provided an example of the disastrous consequences of such an approach. Political judgments were invariably based upon popular assessments of the Africans stemming from the beliefs of the Pioneers; in other words they were founded on ignorance. Likewise military strategies and tactics owed much to those established in the 1890s. These are largely seen through the career of Captain Charles Lendy RA, a fan of the machine gun and "shock and awe." His experiences were reflected by the Rhodesian Army in the 1970s and so units who consistently branded themselves as the best anti-terrorist forces in the world lost.

"The Collapse of Rhodesia" provides a controversial reexamination of the final decades of white minority rule. Josiah Brownell argues that racial population demographics and the pressures they produced were a pervasive, but hidden, force behind many of Rhodesia's most dramatic political events, including UDI. Book excerpt: In 1965 the white minority government of Rhodesia (after 1980 Zimbabwe) issued a unilateral declaration of independence from Britain, rather than negotiate a transition to majority rule. In doing so, Rhodesia became the exception, if not anathema, to the policies and practices of the end of empire. In Unpopular Sovereignty, Luise White shows that the exception that was Rhodesian independence did not, in fact, make the state that different from new nations elsewhere in Africa: indeed, this history of Rhodesian political practices reveals some of the commonalities of mid-twentieth-century thinking about place and race and how much government should link the two. White locates Rhodesia’s independence in the era of decolonization in Africa, a time of great intellectual ferment in ideas about race, citizenship, and freedom. She shows that racists and reactionaries were just as concerned with questions of sovereignty and legitimacy as African nationalists were and took special care to design voter qualifications that could preserve their version of legal statecraft. Examining how the Rhodesian state managed its own governance and electoral politics, she casts an oblique and revealing light by which to rethink the narratives of decolonization.
