Book Human and International Security in India

Download or read book Human and International Security in India written by Crispin Bates and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-09-07 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its common colonial experience, an overarching cultural unity despite apparent diversities, and issues of nation-building cutting across national frontiers, South Asia offers a critical site on which to develop a discourse on regional security that centres on the notion of human security. This book analyses the progress that has been achieved since independence in multiple intersecting areas of human security development in India, the largest nation in South Asia, as well as considering the paradigms that might be brought to bear in future consideration and pursuance of these objectives. Providing original insights, the book analyses the idea of security based on specific human concerns cutting across state frontiers, such as socio-economic development, human rights, gender equity, environmental degradation, terrorism, democracy, and governance. It also discusses the realisation that human security and international security are inextricably inter-linked. The book gives an overview of Indian foreign policy, with particular focus on its relationship with China. It also looks at public health care in India, and issues of microfinance and gender. Democracy and violence in the country is discussed in-depth, as well as Muslim identity and community. Human and International Security in India will be of particular interest to researchers of contemporary South Asian History, South Asian Politics, Sociology and Development Studies.

Book Reinventing Revolution

Download or read book Reinventing Revolution written by Gail Omvedt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-16 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study describes and analyses the new social movements that have arisen in India over the past two decades, in particular the anti-caste movement (of both the untouchables and the lower-middle castes), the women's liberation movement, the farmers' movement (centred on struggles arising out of their integration into a state-controlled capitalist market), and the environmental movements (opposition to destructive development, including resistance to big dam projects and the search for alternatives). Rooted in participant observation, it focuses on the ideologies and self-understanding of the movements themselves. The central themes of this book are the origin of movements in the socio-economic contradictions of post-independence India; their effect on political developments, in particular the disintegration of Congress hegemony; their relation to "traditional Marxist" theory and Communist practice; and their groping toward a synthesis of theory and practice that constitutes a new social vision distinct from traditional Marxism.

Book Class Formation and Political Transformation in Post colonial India

Download or read book Class Formation and Political Transformation in Post colonial India written by T. V. Sathyamurthy and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the study of politics in recent years there has been a growing realization of the need to identify and characterize the political underpinnings of change in an enlarged analytic context. This volume focuses attention on diverse aspects of change from a perspective that seeks to combine analyses exploring the complexities underlying class formation with those of transformative changes in Indian politics, society, and economy. It takes within its compass such fundamental questions as the impact of the New Economic Policy on people and the trade union movement, the new agrarianism, the role of the Left, the changing forms of violence in Indian society, the insidious virus of communalism, human rights in the context of politics, law, and social policy, the New Education Policy and the future of education, the changing political and natural environment ... seeking in each case not only to understand the reality today, but what it bodes for the India of tomorrow.
