A Bibliographical History, volume 7 (CMR 7), covering Central and Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa and South America in the period 1500-1600, is a continuing volume in a general history of relations between the two faiths from the seventh century to the early 20th century. Download or read book Privacy at Sea written by Natacha Klein Käfer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-02-03 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the idea of privacy at sea, from early sixteenth-century maritime expansions to nineteenth-century naval developments. In this period, the sea became a focal point of political and economic ambition as technological and cultural shifts enabled a more extensive exploration of maritime spaces and global coexistence at sea. The exploration of the sea and the conflicts arising from establishing control over maritime routes demanded a more nuanced distinction and negotiation between State and private efforts. Privateering, for example, became a bridge between the private enterprises and the State’s warfares or trade struggles, demonstrating that the sea required public control at the same time as it enabled private endeavours. Although this tension between private and public interests has been explored in military and economic studies, questions of how the private appeared in maritime history have been discussed only through a particularly merchantile lens. This volume adds a new dimension to this discussion by focusing on how privacy and the private were perceived and created by the historical agents at sea. We aim to move beyond the mercantile “private” as a direct opposite to the “public” or the State, thereby opening the discussion of privacy at sea as a multiplicity of lived experiences. Book excerpt: Priceless nutmeg and cloves were for millennia only found on a scattering of active volcanos rearing up from equatorial seas at the far edge of the world; the Spice Islands of today's Indonesia. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to put them on the world map in 1512. To warn off the Spanish, they soon built the first Spice Islands fort. The profits were immense for whoever controlled these Spiceries, and a century of conflict and fort building followed as local sultanates, the Portuguese, the Spanish, the Dutch and the English all fought for supremacy. The Spice Islands hold one of the greatest concentrations of colonial forts anywhere in the world. Now the guns are silent, the galleons long sailed away. Many forts are ruined or lost forever. But across the spectacular islands, still thick with the scent of spices, many old ramparts and bastions remain as testament to an historic era of conflict.Spice Islands Forts tells the story of these forgotten colonial outposts for the first time, and includes over 200 stunning photographs, historic maps and contemporary artwork, as well as a catalogue and useful tips for adventurous travellers.
