Book A Thematic Guide to Documents on the Human Rights of Women

Download or read book A Thematic Guide to Documents on the Human Rights of Women written by Gudmundur Alfredsson and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A Thematic Guide to Documents on the Human Rights of Women" is the first volume in a new series: "The Raoul Wallenberg Institute Human" "Rights Guides," As the term guide' implies, the series will facilitate orientation in international human rights standards by presenting the content of substantive standards in a systematic way. The Guides map out the entire range of human rights and fundamental freedoms as they relate to specific categories of beneficiaries. Future volumes will be devoted to children, minorities, indigenous peoples, detainees, migrants, and so on. Volumes are also planned to deal with health, information, and humanitarian relief, in which the category of beneficiary is open ended. In all such areas, those who are professionally involved in human rights activities need guidance to substantive standards, which are neither widely known nor readily accessible. This first volume establishes the structure to be followed by future Guides. Part 1 groups the relevant provisions from different instruments according to specific rights and freedoms. Part 2 supplies a chronological list of all the instruments that have been excerpted in Part 1, enabling the user to locate the entire document if wished. Part 3 contains an extensive index of all relevant provisions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the nineteenth century some scientists argued that women should not be educated because thinking would use energy needed by the uterus for reproduction. The proof? Educated women had a lower birth rate. Today's researchers can only shake their heads at such reasoning. Yet professional journals and the popular press are increasingly criticizing medical research for ignoring women's health issues. Women and Health Research examines the facts behind the public's perceptions about women participating as subjects in medical research. With the goal of increasing researchers' awareness of this important topic, the book explores issues related to maintaining justice (in its ethical sense) in clinical studies. Leading experts present general principles for the ethical conduct of research on womenâ€"principles that are especially important in the light of recent changes in federal policy on the inclusion of women in clinical research. Women and Health Research documents the historical shift from a paternalistic approach by researchers toward women and a disproportionate reliance on certain groups for research to one that emphasizes proper access for women as subjects in clinical studies in order to ensure that women receive the benefits of research. The book addresses present-day challenges to equity in four areas: Scientificâ€"Do practical aspects of scientific research work at cross-purposes to gender equity? Focusing on drug trials, the authors identify rationales for excluding people from research based on demographics. Social and Ethicalâ€"The authors offer compelling discussions on subjectivity in science, the evidence for male bias, and issues related to race and ethnicity, as well as the recruitment, retention, and protection of research participants. Legalâ€"Women and Health Research reviews federal research policies that affect the inclusion of women and evaluates the basis for researchers' fears about liability, citing court cases. Riskâ€"The authors focus on risks to reproduction and offspring in clinical drug trials, exploring how risks can be identified for study participants, who should make the assessment of risk and benefit for participation in a clinical study, and how legal implications could be addressed. This landmark study will be of immediate use to the research community, policymakers, women's health advocates, attorneys, and individuals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing perception that biomedical research has focused more on the health problems of men relative to those of women and that women have been denied access to advances in medical diagnosis and therapy as a result of being excluded from clinical studies. Women and Health Research, Volume 2, addresses issues connected with women's participation in clinical studies: ethical issues related to recruitment, retention, and the inclusion of pregnant women and other women of childbearing age; legal issues such as liability, compensation for injury, constitutional concerns, and federal regulations; and health consequences associated with exclusion or underrepresentation. The commissioned papers focus on the research participation of women from specific racial and ethnic groups and on whether women have been underrepresented in biomedical research, based on a systematic survey of clinical studies reported in a prominent medical journal.

Book Women Work and Globalization

Download or read book Women Work and Globalization written by Bahira Sherif Trask and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-30 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women increasingly make up a significant percentage of the labor force throughout the world. This transformation is impacting everyone's lives. This book examines the resulting gender role, work, and family issues from a comparative worldwide perspective. Working allows women to earn an income, acquire new skills, and forge social connections. It also brings challenges such as simultaneously managing domestic responsibilities and family relationships. The social, political, and economic implications of this global transformation are explored from an interdisciplinary perspective in this book. The commonalities and the differences of women’s experiences depending on their social class, education, and location in industrialized and developing countries are highlighted throughout. Practical implications are examined including the consequences of these changes for men. Engaging vignettes and case studies from around the world bring the topics to life. The book argues that despite policy reforms and a rhetoric of equality, women still have unique experiences from men both at work and at home. Women, Work, and Globalization explores: Key issues surrounding work and families from a global cross-cultural perspective. The positive and negative experiences of more women in the global workforce. The spread of women’s empowerment on changes in ideologies and behaviors throughout the world. Key literature from family studies, IO, sociology, anthropology, and economics. The changing role of men in the global work-family arena. The impact of sexual trafficking and exploitation, care labor, and transnational migration on women. Best practices and policies that have benefited women, men, and their families. Part 1 reviews the research on gender in the industrialized and developing world, global changes that pertain to women’s gender roles, women’s labor market participation, globalization, and the spread of the women’s movement. Issues that pertain to women in a globalized world including gender socialization, sexual trafficking and exploitation, labor migration and transnational motherhood, and the complexities entailed in care labor are explored in Part 2. Programs and policies that have effectively assisted women are explored in Part 3 including initiatives instituted by NGOs and governments in developing countries and (programs) policies that help women balance work and family in industrialized countries. The book concludes with suggestions for global initiatives that assist women in balancing work and family responsibilities while decreasing their vulnerabilities. Intended as a supplemental text for advanced undergraduate and/or graduate courses in Women/Gender Issues, Work and Family, Gender and Families, Global/International Families, Family Diversity, Multicultural Families, and Urban Sociology taught in psychology, human development and family studies, gender and/or women’s studies, business, sociology, social work, political science, and anthropology. Researchers, policy makers, and practitioners in these fields will also appreciate this thought provoking book.

Book Guidance Document for Supporting Women in Co ed Settings

Download or read book Guidance Document for Supporting Women in Co ed Settings written by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-11-23 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The expert panel developed guidance statements to offer a general understanding of the context and why it is important to address the specific needs of women. These guidance statements provide information about sex and gender differences, women's experiences, and delivery of substance use treatment and recovery services. The statements are meant to help providers understand how women's experiences impact their recovery, regardless of service delivery setting. Women are diverse, and their individual cultural backgrounds, family histories, and life experiences influence their treatment and recovery needs. The guidance statements are based on experiences and characteristics frequently seen among women and will help providers better respond to and serve women in their centers. These statements serve as overarching concepts that guide the more specific practices and strategies described in the next section.
