Book excerpt: A sharp send-up of authoritarian hubris--in which bloated, self-satisfied, bare-bottomed public officials excrete a foul diet literally to be swallowed by the masses--the etching "Doctrinal Nourishment" (1889/95) is one of Belgian artist James Ensor's most politically scathing works. Through a close reading of this print in its political context, curator Theresa Papanikolas traces how Ensor's youthful immersion in Belgian anarchist circles led him to develop violent and grotesque imagery through which he hoped to expose the incompetence of unchecked authority and indict a society in crisis. This well-illustrated volume also puts Ensor's work into art-historical context by juxtaposing examples of French Romanticism, German Expressionism and Dada by a variety of artists, including Honoré Daumier, Félicien Rops, George Grosz and Otto Dix.

Book excerpt: The brash young artist James Ensor painted Christ's Entry into Brussels in 1889 during a period of extraordinary artistic and political fomentation in his native Belgium. It is one of the most dazzling, innovative, and perplexing paintings created in Europe in the late nineteenth century, rivaling any work of its period in audacity and ambition. Huge in scale, complex in design and execution, and brimming with social commentary, the startling canvas presents a scene filled with clowns, masked figures, and--barely visible amid the swirling crowds--the tiny figure of Christ on a donkey entering the city of Brussels. This insightful volume examines the painting in light of Belgium's rich artistic, social, political, and theological debates in the late nineteenth century, and in the context of James Ensor's exceptional career, in order to decipher some of the painting's messages and meanings.

Book Principles of Catholic Theology Book 1 On the Nature of Theology

Download or read book Principles of Catholic Theology Book 1 On the Nature of Theology written by Thomas Joseph White and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catholic theology has to face a certain number of fundamental questions: what is the nature and content of Christian revelation, what are the sources of revelation, how are the mysteries of the faith to be understood in relation of one to another, and how do the truths of the Catholic faith relate to the acquisitions of natural reason. In the contemporary context, Catholic theology is marked by a diversity of approaches, many of which are seemingly incompatible or estranged from one another. How might we think about the unity of Catholic theology over and above the diversity of forms? What role, if any, can Aquinas play as a common doctor in facilitating exchanges between theological traditions in the Church? Principles of Catholic Theology seeks to address directly the nature of Catholic theology and the challenge of its contemporary articulation with an eye towards its articulation in its Thomistic key. This book is also the first of a series of collections of essays by Thomas Joseph White, OP, extending over a range of fundamental topics in Catholic dogmatic theology.

Book A Body of Doctrinal Divinity

Download or read book A Body of Doctrinal Divinity written by John Gill and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, John Gill argues for the existence and characteristics of the triune God. These arguments are all given from a heavily Calvinist perspective but he uses a lot of scripture to back up his claims. He also argues that the character of God is shown through his work on Earth by the elect and most importantly through Christ. These characteristics then carry on in the final stages of life, when human beings pass away and move on to heaven or hell.

Book Biblical Interpretation and Doctrinal Formulation in the Reformed Tradition

Download or read book Biblical Interpretation and Doctrinal Formulation in the Reformed Tradition written by Arie C. Leder and published by Reformation Heritage Books. This book was released on 2014-04-16 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reformed tradition is characterized by a rigorous commitment to theological formulation, yet it is equally known for its commitment to rooting its life and practice in the authority of God’s Word. While these two commitments are commonly acknowledged, the path from biblical interpretation to doctrinal formulation is often overlooked. Examining a diverse group of thinkers across the chronological and international spectrum of the Reformed tradition, this book demonstrates the depth and intricacies involved in the tasks of exegesis and dogmatic construction, the ways they intersect, and the effect it has on the church.
