Book excerpt: The all-important doctor-patient relationship has been fractured. Can it be saved? Can patients once again think that, no matter what, "My doctor will stay by me." That's what Dr. Stafford Cohen's new book is about. DOCTOR, STAY BY ME is a medical memoir about his 51 years as a practicing cardiologist in Boston. Through a series of 44 humorous, tragic, and ultimately uplifting short stories about his patients and experiences, Dr. Cohen depicts how medicine has changed over the years. "In today's world," Dr. Cohen says, "It would be next to impossible for me to have the hands-on, day-to-day, year-to-year relationship with patients that I enjoyed during my career. That is a terrible shame." Dr. Cohen's book chronicles how today's environment robs doctors of the reason they became doctors in the first place-to help people. It deprives patients of certainty and trust that their doctors know who they are and will always be there for them.

A thoroughly contemporary—and deeply moving—portrait of a marriage.” —The New York Times Book Review Ilesa, Nigeria. Ever since they first met and fell in love at university, Yejide and Akin have agreed: polygamy is not for them. But four years into their marriage—after consulting fertility doctors and healers, and trying strange teas and unlikely cures—Yejide is still not pregnant. She assumes she still has time—until her in-laws arrive on her doorstep with a young woman they introduce as Akin’s second wife. Furious, shocked, and livid with jealousy, Yejide knows the only way to save her marriage is to get pregnant. Which, finally, she does—but at a cost far greater than she could have dared to imagine. The unforgettable story of a marriage as seen through the eyes of both husband and wife, Stay With Me asks how much we can sacrifice for the sake of family. Book The Detections of Dr Sam Johnson

Download or read book The Detections of Dr Sam Johnson written by Lillian de la Torre and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2017-06-06 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eight exquisite mystery stories set in London, starring Dr. Samuel Johnson, one of the greatest minds of the eighteenth century. In 1775, as the British Empire is about to be cracked by the earthquake of the American Revolution, twenty English families join in the ghoulish bargain known as a tontine. Each puts £5,000 into a common fund to be held in trust for their children with the terrible stipulation that the money will go to the last child left alive. Such a bargain should take seventy or eighty years to come to fruition, but there is a curse upon this tontine. Sixteen of the twenty children are dead within four years—and the survivors have no one to turn to but the great Dr. Sam Johnson. The seventy-year-old scholar has seen his share of trickery, corruption, and murder, but he’s never encountered anything quite as chilling as “The Tontine Curse.” In this story, and the seven others included in this volume, Dr. Johnson and his assistant, biographer James Boswell, pit their wits against the darkest mysteries of the Enlightenment. In this charming, brilliant series, author Lillian de la Torre features Johnson and Boswell, real-life forerunners of Holmes and Watson, in an assortment of “excellent detective puzzles” (The New York Times).

A finalist for the National Book Award, Lie Down in Darkness centers on the Loftis family—Milton and Helen and their daughters, Peyton and Maudie. The story, told through a series of flashbacks on the day of Peyton’s funeral, is a powerful depiction of a family doomed by its failure to forget and its inability to love. Written in masterful prose that “achieves real beauty” (The Washington Post), William Styron’s debut novel offers unflinching insight into the ineradicable bonds of place and family. The story of Milton, Helen, and their children reveals much about life’s losses and disappointments. Lie Down in Darkness, poignant and compelling, is a classic of modern American literature from the author who went on to earn high critical acclaim—with a Pulitzer Prize for The Confessions of Nat Turner and a National Book Award for Sophie’s Choice—and a place at the top of the New York Times bestseller list. Book The Destruction of Cultural Heritage in Iraq

Download or read book The Destruction of Cultural Heritage in Iraq written by Peter G. Stone and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2008 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discussion of the issues surrounding the destruction of cultural property in times of conflict has become a key issue for debate around the world. This book provides an historical statement as of 1st March 2006 concerning the destruction of the cultural heritage in Iraq. In a series of chapters it outlines the personal stories of a number of individuals who were - and in most cases continue to be - involved. These individuals are involved at all levels, and come from various points along the political spectrum, giving a rounded and balanced perspective so easily lost in single authored reports. It also provides the first views written by Iraqis on the situation of archaeology in Iraq under Saddam and an overview and contextualisation of the issues surrounding the looting, theft and destruction of the archaeological sites, the Iraqi National museum and the libraries in Baghdad since the war was launched in 2003. Beyond this, it examines our attitudes towards the preservation of cultural and heritage resources and, in particular, the growing political awareness of their importance. Although related to a single conflict, taking place at a specific time in history, the relevance of this work goes far beyond these self-imposed boundaries. PETER STONE is Professor of Heritage Studies and Head of School of Arts and Cultures at Newcastle University; JOANNE FARCHAKH BAJJALY is a Lebanese archaeologist and Middle East correspondent for the French magazine Archéologia.

Book excerpt: After the news of the death of her beloved brother, Royal Cabot, Mary Cabot of Massachusetts was shattered. Royal was a soldier who got shot in the American Civil War. Their parents are dead, and Mary could not find sympathy and relief from anyone, including her acquaintances, the church deacon, or the pastor. She slowly starts to despair and loses faith in religion. She finally turns to Winifred Forceythe, her widowed aunt who luckily arrived from Kansas with her daughter, Faith. The novel follows their conversations. Winifred portrays a fascinating image of heaven and slowly restores her niece's faith. Several significant events follow as the story moves forward. The author shows a brilliant development in the character of Mary. Much of the plot is presented as a dialogue about the afterlife between the niece and the aunt. The novel describes heaven as somewhat similar to Earth but a lot better. In contrast with the beliefs of Calvinism, the author's version of paradise is more human, where the dead have spiritual bodies and live in houses, raise families, and experience various activities.
