Download or read book The Sleep Fix written by Diane Macedo and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From renowned ABC News anchor/correspondent and former insomniac Diane Macedo, comes a practical, user-friendly guide to getting better sleep. The Sleep Fix flips the switch on common advice, illuminating the reporter’s relentless search for how to get a good night’s sleep and the surprising, scientific, and practical solutions she found along the way. Roughly thirty percent of the population is estimated to be living with insomnia, while many more unknowingly suffer from other sleep disorders. In The Sleep Fix, Macedo aims to change that with perspective-shifting research and easy-to-implement solutions based not just on science and experts, but also her own years-long struggle. As an early-morning reporter and overnight news anchor, Macedo learned the hard way how valuable sleep is, and how it affects everything from our heart to our brain to our immune system. The longer Macedo struggled, the more her health deteriorated. Desperate, she tried standard sleep tip after standard sleep tip, but nothing worked - instead, it made her worse. Finally, after developing a tolerance to sleeping pills, Macedo decided to attack the problem as a journalist, interviewing sleep experts from all over the world to get to the bottom of what really keeps us from sleeping—and the various ways to fix it. As Macedo explains, the solution to catching zzz’s isn’t as simple as giving up caffeine, or putting away your phone before bed. With her down-to-earth explanations and humor, she instead teaches us how to: • Understand sleep biology • Identify sleep obstacles • Flag sleep myths and separate fact from fiction • Try counterintuitive approaches • Shift our mindset Most importantly, Macedo — a busy, working mom — teaches us how to adjust and fit these solutions into our everyday lives. Offering expert wisdom, cutting-edge research, intimate sleep stories from public figures, and actionable advice, The Sleep Fix is the tell-it-like-it-is guide this sleep-deprived world has been waiting for.

Book Ace in a Day

Download or read book Ace in a Day written by Wayne K. Blickenstaff and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2022-09-08 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wayne K. Blickenstaff, known as “Blick,” was a stalwart of the 350th Fighter Squadron of the 353rd Fighter Group based at Goxhill, Metfield and Raydon, England as part of the Eighth Air Force prosecuting the strategic air campaign against Germany. As an original cadre member, he rose steadily through the ranks from a Second Lieutenant Element Leader to Flight Leader, Squadron Operations Officer, Squadron Leader and finally to a Lieutenant Colonel and Group Operations Officer. Flying the P-47 Thunderbolt and P-51 Mustang, he completed two tours of operations between 1943 and 1945 encompassing 133 missions and claims of 10 enemy aircraft destroyed in the air. His double “ace” status included a Me262 jet fighter and the destruction of five aircraft in one mission—giving him rare “ace in a day” status. Ace in a Day is Blick’s honest and gritty personal memoir of his air war in Europe. His vivid writing places you in the cockpit as he and his comrades battle the enemy in the skies or attack ground targets across Europe. His account conveys a true sense of just how dangerous flying World War II fighters, in all weather conditions, really was. It was not just the enemy that could kill you. A moment’s inattention, overconfidence or simple mistake could be deadly. As a keen observer of character, Blick’s pen portraits of those around him, including many of those who sadly did not survive the war, offer a poignant and deeply moving tribute to those with whom he served. Anyone wanting an understanding of the dynamics of a working fighter squadron at war and the dilemmas faced by those in command should read this book. Supported by an impressive array of original documentation, photographs, and detailed appendices, including Blick’s never-before published wartime journal, Ace in a Day provides a unique and valuable insight into the harsh realities of the air war in Europe from one of the “Mighty Eighth’s” top fighter pilots.

Book Epiphany

  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 1995-12-01
  • ISBN : 0140251820
  • Pages : 321 pages

Download or read book Epiphany written by Ferrol Sams and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1995-12-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of eight novels, including Run with the Horsemen. Each of these novella-length tales focuses on an epiphany—a revelation born of an unlikely interchange. A quixotic old doctor who loves poetry and battles bureaucracy talks with his new patient, an ex-con whose story of racism and injustice changes them both. The mettle of a man’s 40-year marriage is examined when he and his wife, on an expedition to gather wild plants, survive a series of odd accidents and strange encounters in the remote Georgia mountains. A group of smart-alecky high school seniors interviews the town’s oldest citizen and learns a lesson or two about the not-so-good (but maybe not-so-bad) old days and the bonds that can bridge generations. In Epiphany, Ferrol Sams once again displays the warmth, humor, and wisdom that have delighted readers and earned him many a comparison to Mark Twain. “In typical Sams style, the three stories . . . are written with humor and heart. He is a master storyteller.”—Macon Telegraph

Book Son Of A Son Of The Thin Man In

Download or read book Son Of A Son Of The Thin Man In written by P. Gawel and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this, the second offering of The Son of a Son of the Thin Man series, Murder Along the Crooked Way starts in Detroit and travels throughout the Waweatunong, or Crooked Way of Michigan and Canadian waters. Waweatunong is a Native American term for the connected waterway that includes Lake Erie, the Detroit River, Lake St. Clair, the St. Clair River, and Lake Huron. To look at it from outer space would certainly give the appearance of a crooked way. Nicholas Charles III, the once filthy-rich man, then poor man and currently attempting to get back to rich man status from California and Laura Stackhouse, his native-Detroiter fiancé and former hooker are finally engaged to married. The pending nuptials and recent changes in their living arrangements opened the door for our protagonists to spend more time together delving into the criminal element lurking in and around the Great Lakes. After a court battle to recover a portion of his inherited millions that was embezzled by his deceased accountant, Ferguson Malarkey, Nick and his bride-to-be make their first joint purchase. Of all the possibilities open to them, they bought a boat and sail directly into the path of abduction, drug trafficking, and murder on the high seas. In the midst of murder and mayhem, Doc went his way and the newlyweds went theirs. Doc inadvertently crosses paths with the just married, Mr. and Mrs. Charles and rekindles their earlier camaraderie in pursuit of the killer(s). The three sleuths and their crew blaze a trail through Michigan's water winter wonderland in an attempt to bring the murderers to justice. Returning crewmates from the Civil War era, Mackie and Cleophus get in on the action with their newly discovered hide and go seek type approach to their existence. From their ghostly past, the two former slaves returned to life in Murder by Proxy, one year earlier. Their adventures along the Crooked Way with their newly acquired post-Civil War shipmates give them an opportunity to fight crime when they are alive, then return to their ghostly state and do the same. As not-so-typical ghosts, they're able to see things as no one else can and go where no man has gone before. A renewed Native American connection with Laura's distant past adds to the Charles' cultural repertoire and provides a few curious twists and turns as well. Old friends reunite as allies in the fight against the sinister goings on throughout the Crooked Way. Who will be the hero? Who will betray the home team? Are Nick and Laura's newfound friends who they appear to be? What is the MacGuffin? Why the Great Lakes? Who did it? Only a read inside Murder Along the Crooked Way will satisfy your desire for the answers to this complex who done it.

Book excerpt: Science fiction space opera. Action, adventure, humor, romance and a lot more. Excerpt; “Take a sedative Melanie. I have to stay awake now. If you could be so kind as to bring me about five stimulants first I be greatly appreciative. Then before you go to sleep some food. I can't take the chance of going to the galley myself.” I said. “Just going to the head is going to be risk enough.” There was a head right outside the bridge but even that was a dangerous risk. Unfortunately it was a risk I was going to have to take, unless I wanted to soil myself. Unfortunately sometimes desperate times called for desperate measures but that one I just wouldn't be able to do. She made three trips, the third trip was my fifth stimulant and her bottle and glass. I had given her permission to drink as long as I was awake and there was absolutely nothing for her to do anyway. Her only job would be to sit in that co-pilots seat when I was asleep and wake me if it became necessary. We were going to be living on the bridge. The only good thing I could say about that was that my captains chair did recline. Melanie managed to get four drinks down before the sedative took her away, hopefully to sweet dreams. I got up and reclined her seat for her which didn't even come close to waking her. I picked at the food she had brought me over a period of hours, not wanting to fill my stomach. A full stomach would have the effect of tiring me and that I couldn't afford to let happen. Nine hours later Whelan was on the com. “Still awake?” “Still here Whelan.” “I know you said twelve hour shifts but I just had a good sleep and I know you have to be tired.” Whelan said. “So I'll take over now for a twelve and you can do a twelve next time. Get some sleep Marc. Try to sleep for a solid twelve if you can.” I thought that was possible actually as tired as I was. Melanie was stretching I noticed, our conversation having woken her. I looked at her and her eyes were open. “Use the doc. Go get yourself about five stimulants. Get enough food to last the day and use the head. You're about to be on deck.” No talk of reluctance today she rose to do as bid. She had a healthy desire to live. That was clear enough. I connected com to the ships stereo system and put the volume on high. If Whelan had a sudden warning to give I was definitely going to wake up. Then I poured a cognac. Three would be my limit but no sedatives. It wouldn't even be close to getting me drunk but it would help me get to sleep without the sedatives. I definitely could not take sedatives. I needed to be able to wake up if it became necessary. Our ships were in passive mode. Everything that we could afford to power down was powered down. If the Tssah passed over our crevice it was possible they might not notice us before it was too late. The guns held residual charges, maybe a few shots from each and hope that was enough while I brought the ship back to life to continue fighting should that be necessary. She that even be possible, I amended. I really had no idea just how advanced they were. Certainly not the most advanced but certainly more advanced than we were. Melanie came back with stimulants and food on a tray she had found and saw the drink in my hand. “I thought you weren't going to get drunk?” “I'm not.” I said. “Just a few. I can't afford to take a sedative. My shift starts again in twelve hours. Try not to make noise and I'm going to try to sleep all the way through.” “I take it Whelan is doing his twelve now?” Melanie said. “He is but I have consistently been a better fighter. I'm going to need you to be on point Melanie. This is truly serious. This is as serious as it gets. I know you'll be bored but this is our lives and we won't get second chances.” “I understand. I'll be awake and I'll be sitting right here the whole time, unless I have to use the head and there's nothing I can do about that except try and make it quick.” I told her about the com being connected to the stereo system, drank my drinks and not surprisingly, fell fast asleep. I only got up once to use the head. Good to her word Melanie was awake and alert next to me. And sober. The co-pilot had the same console I had including access to the guns. If I took control of my console it overrode hers. I used the head and watched for a moment while she did the same. I had another drink and back asleep. I slept a total of about nine hours. When I awoke rested I unhooked the stereo from com, used the doc, made stimulants and got something to eat. Then I was back on the bridge. Melanie did of course know how to use the guns and was very good. There was a practice program that was just like the real thing to help acclimate a person to this particular system and she was nearly as good as me, maybe just as good. She was after all a gunner by trade. Whelan had a little over two hours left of his shift so added to my twelve hour shift it was a total of fourteen hours I would have to be alert. Perfectly doable. “If you want to drink go right ahead.” I said. “I'm basically on duty for the next fourteen hours.” “I thought you'd never ask.” Melanie said. She picked up a half empty bottle, filled her glass and drank it down. I watched enviously.
