Book excerpt: If God means for us to save sex for marriage, why doesn't he just zap us with sexuality on our wedding night? Why do most of us experience sexual feelings throughout our adult lives, not just in the safe confines of marriage? Is limiting marriage to the union of a man and a woman anything but outdated prejudice? What is our sexuality actually for? Today's culture overwhelmingly tells us that sex is essential for human flourishing. Far too often the church perpetuates the same message - as long as you are married. But far from being liberating, this idolising of sex leaves us even more sexually broken than before. With refreshing honesty and clarity, Ed Shaw calls on the church to rediscover its confidence in the Bible's teaching about our ability to experience or express sexual feelings. He points us to how God's word reveals that sexuality's ultimate purpose is to help us better know God and the full power of his passionate love. He shows us how this is surprisingly good news for all our joys and struggles with sexuality.

  • ISBN : 9780674026247
  • Pages : 352 pages

Download or read book Sexual Fluidity written by Lisa M. Diamond and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is love “blind” when it comes to gender? For women, it just might be. This unsettling and original book offers a radical new understanding of the context-dependent nature of female sexuality. Lisa M. Diamond argues that for some women, love and desire are not rigidly heterosexual or homosexual but fluid, changing as women move through the stages of life, various social groups, and, most important, different love relationships. This perspective clashes with traditional views of sexual orientation as a stable and fixed trait. But that view is based on research conducted almost entirely on men. Diamond is the first to study a large group of women over time. She has tracked one hundred women for more than ten years as they have emerged from adolescence into adulthood. She summarizes their experiences and reviews research ranging from the psychology of love to the biology of sex differences. Sexual Fluidity offers moving first-person accounts of women falling in and out of love with men or women at different times in their lives. For some, gender becomes irrelevant: “I fall in love with the person, not the gender,” say some respondents.Sexual Fluidity offers a new understanding of women’s sexuality—and of the central importance of love.

In order to attract a life partner and build a healthy intimate relationship, you must first become a good partner to yourself. This book offers twenty invaluable lessons that will help you explore and commit to your own emotional and psychological well-being so you can be ready, resilient, and confident in love. Many of us enter into romantic relationships full of expectation and hope, only to be sorely disappointed by the realization that the partner we’ve selected is a flawed human being with their own neuroses, history, and desires. Most relationships end because one or both people haven’t done the internal work necessary to develop self-awareness and take responsibility for their own experiences. We’ve all heard “You can’t love anyone unless you love yourself,” but amid life’s distractions and the myth of perfect, romantic love, how exactly do you do that? In Loving Bravely, psychologist, professor and relationship expert Alexandra H. Solomon introduces the idea of relational self-awareness, encouraging you to explore your personal history to gain an understanding of your own relational patterns, as well as your strengths and weaknesses in relationships. By doing so, you’ll learn what relationships actually require, beyond the fairytale notions of romance. And by maintaining a steady but gentle focus on yourself, you’ll build the best possible foundation for making a loving connection. By understanding your past relationship experiences, cultivating a strong sense of self-awareness, and determining what it is you really want in a romantic partner—you’ll be ready to find the healthy, lasting love your heart desires.

Book The Pleasure Gap

  • Author : Katherine Rowland
  • Publisher : Seal Press
  • Release : 2020-02-04
  • ISBN : 1580058345
  • Pages : 297 pages

Download or read book The Pleasure Gap written by Katherine Rowland and published by Seal Press. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American culture is more sexually liberal than ever. But compared to men, women's sexual pleasure has not grown: Up to 40 percent of American women experience the sexual malaise clinically known as low sexual desire. Between this low desire, muted pleasure, and experiencing sex in terms of labor rather than of lust, women by the millions are dissatisfied with their erotic lives. For too long, this deficit has been explained in terms of women's biology, stress, and age. In The Pleasure Gap, Katherine Rowland rejects the idea that women should settle for diminished pleasure; instead, she argues women should take inequality in the bedroom as seriously as we take it in the workplace and understand its causes and effects. Drawing on extensive research and interviews with more than one hundred women and dozens of sexual health professionals, Rowland shows that the pleasure gap is neither medical malady nor psychological condition but rather a result of our culture's troubled relationship with women's sexual expression. This provocative exploration of modern sexuality makes a case for closing the gap for good.

Book excerpt: Don't Hold My Head Down is a memoir about sex. It starts with the author having a disappointing, drunken wank to internet porn, and ends with her having day-long orgasms and taking on the most powerful newspaper in the country. In her mid-thirties, Lucy-Anne Holmes realised that something was missing. When it came to sex she still felt like a novice: she lacked confidence and felt incapable of asking for what she wanted. But when she looked for a how-to guide or a workshop, she found that everything she googled was geared towards the male gaze rather than women's pleasure. So, she made a 'fuckit list' of the things she'd like to try - among them slow sex, ejaculation, different types of orgasm, being sexual with other women, BDSM, sex parties and making porn - and set out on a journey of discovery. This is the book that Lucy wanted to read in the first place; a frank, eye-opening and inspiring account of the search for better sex that shares her tips, revelations, failures and triumphs.

  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2020-12
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 158 pages

Download or read book The Sexually Healthy Man written by Andrew J Bauman and published by . This book was released on 2020-12 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DESCRIPTION: I grew up in the Southern Baptist church of the 90's during the height of the True Love Waits movement, accompanied by Joshua Harris' bestseller, I Kissed Dating Goodbye. If you don't know what I am referring to, consider yourself blessed. Many of the ideas perpetuated by this culture were infused with fear and shame, offering no practical help or guidance in equipping young people to become healthy sexual human beings. As I approached adulthood, I became accustomed to feeling shame around my sexuality; trying to white-knuckle purity and falling short over and over again. This left me feeling full of self-hatred and hopelessness. I hope for this book to serve as the guide I wish I'd had, providing comfort and clarity to those who find themselves in a similar struggle for sexual health. I have written these essays not only for men but also for women who want to understand what healthy sexuality can look like in a partner. May this book be life-giving to your sexual healing. May courage accompany you as you engage with these essays of spirituality, sexuality, & restoration.ENDORSEMENTS: "Most of us have some sense as to what God says about sex. Few of us have a sense of what sex says about God. In The Sexually Healthy Man, Andrew Bauman shows men how sexuality can be a window into understanding God more deeply; as well as understanding the glory and strength of our own masculine soul. With a rare blend of disarming vulnerability and trauma-informed clinical wisdom, Andrew lovingly helps readers understand the real nature of sexual brokenness. Best of all, he sets men on a proven path to living wholehearted and free in a way that will make us all think differently about sex, spirituality, and restoration." - Michael John Cusick, CEO at Restoring the Soul, Inc. Author of Surfing for God "The Sexually Healthy Man arises out of the immense courage of therapist, Andrew Bauman. The title may seem like an oxymoron to any man paying attention to a newsfeed or a mirror. It's tempting to see the debris of sexual harm around us and within us and respond with despair or minimization. Andrew invites us to an alternative path that is both unflinchingly honest and hope restoring. This is a generous book, full of stories and wisdom. The Sexually Healthy Man can guide you to personal healing and, in the process, it might also enliven you to be a participant in the seismic cultural change needed in our world today."- Jay Stringer, M.Div, MA Author of Unwanted: How Sexual Brokenness Reveals Our Way to Healing "As a young therapist, I devoured Irvin Yalom's The Gift of Therapy - winsome and wise letters to his therapists and patients nudging them along in a journey of healing. Like Yalom's short letters, Andrew's essays are deep but accessible, courageous, and compassionate, offered out of the experience of a seasoned therapist. They're engaging invitations to heal our systems and ourselves by addressing our stories, our bodies, and our fears of sex and sexuality. What a gift!" -Chuck DeGroat, PH.D.Professor & Author "As a blogger who often has to pick up the pieces from women betrayed by the men they loved, this book made me hope again! What would the world look like if men would humble themselves, be honest, and reclaim health and wholeness? Let Andrew Bauman lead you on the messy road toward healthy sexuality--and real intimacy between the sexes." -Sheila Wray Gregoire, ToLoveHonorandVacuum.com, Author of The Good Girl's Guide to Great Sex

Book Smut

    Book Details:
  • Author : Murray S. Davis
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2016-05-15
  • ISBN : 022616246X
  • Pages : 342 pages

Download or read book Smut written by Murray S. Davis and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-05-15 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique study of sexuality and society offers a provocative reframing of the subject—including what the author calls a periodic table of perversions. In Smut, Murray S. Davis investigates sex in a way that differs from nearly all previous books on the subject. Discarding the simplistic theory of sex as a natural instinct, he sets out to develop new explanations for its universal appeal. Drawing on a wide variety of literary forms, including the work of novelists, poets, and even comedians—and exploring everything from theology to pornography—Davis recaptures sex for the social sciences. First, Davis examines the difference between sexual arousal and ordinary experience, arguing that arousal alters a person's experience of the world. Positing an erotic reality distinct from everyday life, he demonstrates how different perceptions of time, space, human bodies, and other social types occur in each realm. Davis then asks why some people find this alternation between realities dirty, and offers a periodic table of perversions that summarizes the social elements out of which those who find sex dirty construct their world. Finally, Davis considers other conceptual grids affected by the alternation between everyday and erotic realities: the pornographic, which portrays individual, social relations, and social organizations being disrupted by sex; and the naturalistic, which conceives of them in a way that cannot be disrupted by sex. Throughout history these ideologies have battled for control over Western society, and, in his conclusion, Davis offers a prognosis for the future of sex based on these historical ideological cycles.

Book Premarital Sex in America

Download or read book Premarital Sex in America written by Mark Regnerus and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-10 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period of young adulthood, from ages 18 to 23, is popularly considered the most sexualized in life. But is it true? What do we really know about the sexual lives of young people today? Premarital Sex in America combines illuminating personal stories and comprehensive research surveys to provide the fullest portrait of heterosexuality among young adults ever produced. Mark Regnerus and Jeremy Uecker draw upon a wealth of survey data as well as scores of in-depth interviews with young adults from around the country, both in and out of college. Digging underneath stereotypes and unexamined assumptions, the authors offer compelling--and often surprising--answers to such questions as: How do the emotional aspects of sexual relations differ between young men and women? What role do political orientations play in their sexual relations? How have online dating and social networking sites affected the relationships of emerging adults? Why are young people today waiting so much longer to marry? How prevalent are nontraditional forms of sex, and what do people think of them? To better understand what drives the sexual behaviors of emerging adults, Regnerus and Uecker pay special attention to two important concepts: sexual scripts, the unwritten and often unconscious rules that guide sexual behavior and attitudes; and sexual economics, a theory which suggests that the relative scarcity of men on college campuses contributes to the "hookup" culture by allowing men to diminish their level of commitment and thereby lower the "price" they have to "pay" for sex. For anyone wishing to understand how sexual relations between young adults have changed and are changing, Premarital Sex in America will serve as a touchstone for years to come.
