Book Natural Resource Pricing and Rents

Download or read book Natural Resource Pricing and Rents written by Andrey Vavilov and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the economics of natural resource markets and pricing, as well as the field of natural resource economics in general. It presents the key contributions to this field of research, including the pioneering works and contemporary studies. The book highlights the basic principles and ideas underlying theoretical models of resource pricing. The models considered in the book underline the fundamental determinants of resource prices and the economic nature of rents for non-renewable and renewable resources. Besides the classical theory of exhaustible resource economics, the book includes several issues that are of high importance for global economic growth, such as the transition to alternative energy and the economics of climate change. The authors also consider the issues of commodity pricing and a resource cartel’s activity that are relevant to the world oil market. The book provides analytical solutions illustrated with numerical examples. It allows an intuitive understanding of the subject and the model inferences through graphical illustrations and an informal introduction. It, therefore, is a must-read for everybody interested in a better understanding of resource prices, resource markets, and resource economics.

Book Exhaustible Commodity Prices Under the Rule of Hotelling

Download or read book Exhaustible Commodity Prices Under the Rule of Hotelling written by Hui Sun and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-22 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research project develops and extends a Hotelling type model of the optimal extraction of a nonrenewable natural resource. From the model, the relationships between the resource price movements and such factors as discount rates, market structures, extraction costs and resource reserves are obtained. The major theoretical predictions gained from the model are 1) with endogenous discount rates, as discount rates are high, a natural resource would be depleted more slowly; 2) a monopolistic extraction of a natural resource depends not only on discount rates, but also on demand elasticities compared with a competitive industry, and 3) the traditional increasing price paths of exhaustible natural resources could be altered by the rate of changes in marginal extraction costs. The model suggests a declining and a U-shaped time path for prices with a decreasing rate of change of marginal extraction costs. This research project also empirically tests the price behavior for ten different mineral commodities based on annual data over the period 1950:1-2010:12. The empirical study indicates that substantial differences across different natural resource markets make it difficult.

Book Natural Resources and Violent Conflict

Download or read book Natural Resources and Violent Conflict written by Ian Bannon and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research carried out by the World Bank on the root causes of conflict and civil war finds that a developing country's economic dependence on natural resources or other primary commodities is strongly associated with the risk level for violent conflict. This book brings together a collection of reports and case studies that explore what the international community in particular can do to reduce this risk.; The text explains the links between natural resources and conflict and examines the impact of resource dependence on economic performance, governance, secessionist movements and revel financing. It then explores avenues for international action - from financial and resource reporting procedures and policy recommendations to commodity tracking systems and enforcement instruments, including sanctions, certification requirements, aid conditionality, legislative and judicial instruments.

Book Commodity Price Dynamics

Download or read book Commodity Price Dynamics written by Craig Pirrong and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-31 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commodities have become an important component of many investors' portfolios and the focus of much political controversy over the past decade. This book utilizes structural models to provide a better understanding of how commodities' prices behave and what drives them. It exploits differences across commodities and examines a variety of predictions of the models to identify where they work and where they fail. The findings of the analysis are useful to scholars, traders and policy makers who want to better understand often puzzling - and extreme - movements in the prices of commodities from aluminium to oil to soybeans to zinc.

Book Agricultural Pricing and Environmental Degradation

Download or read book Agricultural Pricing and Environmental Degradation written by Edward Barbier and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1992 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes in pricing policies are not enough to encourage poor farmers to reduce resource degradation. Other approaches are also needed, such as providing better research and extension advice, improving property rights and management, and establishing more secure tenure or access rights. Just because we do not always understand the economic and social factors determining incentive effects does not mean they do not exist.

Book Toxic Releases by Manufacturing

Download or read book Toxic Releases by Manufacturing written by Robert E. B. Lucas and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1992 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Would free trade result in greater and more rapid environmental degradation for developing countries? Less protection of their domestic industrial chemical industries would reduce the pollution-intensity of their manufacturing sector - but merely relocating firms that emit globally damaging toxins clearly misses the point.

Book Coping with the Disappointing Rates of Return of Development Projects with Environmental Impacts

Download or read book Coping with the Disappointing Rates of Return of Development Projects with Environmental Impacts written by William Ascher and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1992 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fundamental political economy of early commitment to grandiose projects of uncertain environmental consequence has not been overturned. Projects with environmental impacts often have unacceptably low rates of return; governments and international agencies frequently fail to reject projects of this type. More realistic evaluations will help. It is important to hold those responsible for appraising a project accountable for their appraisals.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A universal case cannot be made for national carbon taxes. Nevertheless, such taxes make eminent sense for many developing countries - on the grounds of equity, efficiency, ease of tax administration, and an improved local environment, even ignoring the potential benefits from controlling global carbon emissions.

Book Growth and Welfare Losses from Carbon Emissions Restrictions

Download or read book Growth and Welfare Losses from Carbon Emissions Restrictions written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1992 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To achieve a specified reduction in the accumulation of greenhouses gases in the atmosphere, it is far better to allow for flexibility in the timing of adjustment policies than to impose a particular deadline. This lesson applies to all countries: rigidly imposed limits on emissions controls entail unnecessary economic costs.
