Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus said in Matthew's Gospel, "For many are called but few are chosen." This statement by our Lord is somewhat confusing to many biblically oriented people. Paul, in his first letter to Corinth, wrote, "No one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual." Paul wrote these truths to the Corinthians in 2:11–13. Therefore, as Paul said, we can compare spiritual things by comparing Bible verses with other verses in God's word. As we do, we gain a greater understanding. This book, Divine Selection, examines many New Testament scriptures in order to make spiritual comparisons. I believe that any person who reads Divine Selection will come to understand Jesus's words, "For many are called but few are chosen." Your old friend in Christ,Jack Binner

Download or read book Divine Election written by Eduardo J. Echeverria and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dogmatic study addresses two perennial questions. First, how do we reconcile God's sovereignty with human freedom, not just in general, but particularly with respect to the Church's full understanding of God's plan of salvation as a work of grace? Second (and equally crucial) is the question of how we reconcile God's universal salvific will with the mystery of predestination, election, and reprobation. The author of this study does theology within the normative tradition of confessional Catholicism, and thus in the light of Catholic teaching. But this study is also an ecumenical work, indeed, a work in receptive ecumenism, and hence he listens attentively to the reflections and arguments not only of his fellow Catholic theologians (Matthias Joseph Scheeben and Hans Urs von Balthasar) but also theologians of the Evangelical and Reformed traditions (John Calvin, Herman Bavinck, Karl Barth, and G. C. Berkouwer). This book concludes with a Catholic synthesis regarding the doctrine of divine election in dogmatic and ecumenical perspective.

Download or read book Divine Election written by Gerrit Cornelis Berkouwer and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1960 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A discussion of election in a perspective and spirit that will be quite novel to most theologians and ministers. The author contends that election can be understood only within faith, and within a spirit of doxology, for election takes place 'in Christ'. Hence election must be understood and employed in terms of the Gospel. He then repudiates theological usage which employs election and reprobation as a principle of interpretation for theology with the usual consequence of deducing from this truth a nice logical system of theology. Another powerful feature of this book is its criticism of the conception of the sovereignty of God and then makes it into a mere principle of naked 'abosolute power', and ethically neutral principle of brute force. Book Divine Providence

  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2016-09-08

Download or read book Divine Providence written by Bruce R. Reichenbach and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We ask God to involve himself providentially in our lives, yet we cherish our freedom to choose and act. Employing both theological reflection and philosophical analysis, the author explores how to resolve the interesting and provocative puzzles arising from these seemingly conflicting desires. He inquires what sovereignty means and how sovereigns balance their power and prerogatives with the free responses of their subjects. Since we are physically embodied in a physical world, we also need to ask how this is compatible with our being free agents. Providence raises questions about God's fundamental attributes. The author considers what it means to affirm God's goodness as logically contingent, how being almighty interfaces with God's self-limitation, and the persistent problems that arise from claiming that God foreknows the future. Discussion of these divine properties spills over into the related issues of why God allows, or even causes, pain and suffering; why, if God is all-knowing, we need to petition God repeatedly and encounter so many unanswered prayers; and how miracles, as ways God acts in the world, are possible and knowable. Throughout, the author looks at Scripture and attends to how providence deepens our understanding of God and enriches our lives.
