Book Divine Imperfection

Download or read book Divine Imperfection written by L. Appel Jr. and published by XinXii. This book was released on 2022-02-25 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The root of human dilemmas, although they always present themselves in multiple hues, invariably plunges into the question of human dualism, consciousness and matter. There's a subtle cosmic Darwinism going on that we haven't paid attention to yet. A real universal filter is at work, silently decimating intelligent biological species across the Universe. From our animal matrix either this subtle “something” that we decide to identify as “consciousness” will emerge, or our bodily instincts will inevitably lead us to nuclear suicide. The "Fermi paradox" suggests this possibility explicitly. The human mind, this highly efficient and complex biological software, emerged from this same Darwinian process of violent and brutal struggle for survival. So, the mind also naturally tends to aggression and violence when dissociated from consciousness, that “energy” that many decided to call pejoratively as “the ghost in the machine”. The human world in general expresses precisely such “reality” created by the mind, when dissociated from consciousness. Hence our inclination towards indifference and aggression. Our animal instincts are still highly active, determining our every move. So, the nuclear age effectively corresponds to the turning point of intelligent species. Every day we seem to take a step forward towards "defcon 1", the threat of imminent nuclear destruction. The existence of the doomsday clock is known only to a few. Atomic weapons are not "peace insurers" by the certainty of mutual assured destruction (M.A.D.). This is a truly insane perspective that exposes us in our ravings, making it more than clear that we have deviated from our natural evolutionary course. However, if we implode ourselves, it will only show that we never had what it takes to persevere as a conscious biological species. The Universe, however, will lose nothing. It is it's simple and natural way of functioning. The Parable of the Sower reminds us of this reality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Inspired Imperfection, Gregory A. Boyd adds another counterintuitive and provocative thesis to his corpus. While conservative scholars and pastors have struggled for years to show that the Bible is without errors, Boyd considers this a fool's errand. Instead, he says, we should embrace the mistakes and contradictions in Scripture, for they show that God chose to use fallible humans to communicate timeless truths. Just as God ultimately came to save humanity in the form of a human, God chose to impart truth through the imperfect medium of human writing. Instead of the Bible's imperfections being a reason to attack its veracity, these "problems" actually support the trustworthiness of Christian Scripture. Inspired Imperfection is required reading for anyone who's questioned the Bible because of its contradictions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March 2013, after seeing an advertising campaign for Victoria's Secret that was targeted especially to younger female demographics and much too sexy, Evan Dolive, a concerned father and ordained minister, wrote an open letter calling for Victoria's Secret and other companies to view girls as human beings, not objects. What happened next was truly amazing. His letter hit a nerve. It was viewed numerous times—3.9 million times to be exact—and Dolive was interviewed by national news publications and appeared on CNN and Headline News. Dolive didn't want his 15 minutes to be in vain. So he turned it into a labor of love—"Seeking Imperfection,"—a book that's grounded in biblical insights, stories, reflection questions, and prayers for anyone who believes in empowering children to grow up to value themselves for who they are.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the opinion of competent thinkers the Christian Faith of Schleiermacher is, with the exception of Calvin's Institutes, the most important work covering the whole field of doctrine to which Protestant theology can point. To say this is not necessarily to adopt either his fundamental principles or the detailed conclusions to which these principles have guided him. On all such matters a nearly unbroken controversy has long prevailed. Indeed, at the moment a formidable attack is being delivered upon his main positions by a new and active school of thought in Germany. But, whether for acceptance or rejection, it is necessary for serious students to know what Schleiermacher has to say."--Editors' preface, page [v]

Book Unhaling on God Grace and a Perfectly Imperfect Life

Download or read book Unhaling on God Grace and a Perfectly Imperfect Life written by Elise Seyfried and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2010-05-06 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unhaling: On God, Grace and a Perfectly Imperfect Life is a collection of funny, insightful essays that celebrate the spiritual in the most unlikely everyday moments. These are snapshots of Elise's cluttered, wildly disorganized, very full life as church worker, actress, writer and mom of five. God's grace can be found everywhere: in burned dinners, bungled piano lessons, forgotten appointments, and overgrown yards. God is right there when the kids break out in chicken pox (all at once), when they skydive, study in Thailand, enter the Naval Academy, perform their music in concert, take a first solo bus trip to Boston. And God gently and lovingly encourages a certain perpetually nervous fifty-something to unclench, relax and "unhale". Unhaling challenges us all to look at our own experiences with new eyes, and recognize the faithful One who stands with us, with all our flaws and our failures throughout our perfectly imperfect lives.

Book An Imperfect God

Download or read book An Imperfect God written by Henry Wiencek and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Imperfect God is a major new biography of Washington, and the first to explore his engagement with American slavery When George Washington wrote his will, he made the startling decision to set his slaves free; earlier he had said that holding slaves was his "only unavoidable subject of regret." In this groundbreaking work, Henry Wiencek explores the founding father's engagement with slavery at every stage of his life--as a Virginia planter, soldier, politician, president and statesman. Washington was born and raised among blacks and mixed-race people; he and his wife had blood ties to the slave community. Yet as a young man he bought and sold slaves without scruple, even raffled off children to collect debts (an incident ignored by earlier biographers). Then, on the Revolutionary battlefields where he commanded both black and white troops, Washington's attitudes began to change. He and the other framers enshrined slavery in the Constitution, but, Wiencek shows, even before he became president Washington had begun to see the system's evil. Wiencek's revelatory narrative, based on a meticulous examination of private papers, court records, and the voluminous Washington archives, documents for the first time the moral transformation culminating in Washington's determination to emancipate his slaves. He acted too late to keep the new republic from perpetuating slavery, but his repentance was genuine. And it was perhaps related to the possibility--as the oral history of Mount Vernon's slave descendants has long asserted--that a slave named West Ford was the son of George and a woman named Venus; Wiencek has new evidence that this could indeed have been true. George Washington's heroic stature as Father of Our Country is not diminished in this superb, nuanced portrait: now we see Washington in full as a man of his time and ahead of his time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two of today's leading experts on the Christian political tradition plumb significant moments in premodern Christian political thought, using them in original and adventurous ways to clarify, criticize, and redirect contemporary political perspectives and discussions. Drawing on the Bible and the Western history of ideas, Oliver and Joan Lockwood O'Donovan explore key Christian voices on "the political" -- political action, political institutions, and political society. Covered here are Bonaventure, Thomas, Ockham, Wycliff, Erasmus, Luther, Grotius, Barth, Ramsey, and key modern papal encyclicals. The authors' discussion takes them across a wide range of political concerns, from economics and personal freedom to liberal democracy and the nature of statehood. Ultimately, these insightful essays point to political judgment as the strength of the past theological tradition and its eclipse as the weakness of present political thought.
