Book excerpt: During a hearing in 2004 on the financial services industry, congressional members and witnesses expressed concern about the industry's lack of workforce diversity, particularly in key management-level positions. Witnesses stated that financial services firms (e.g., banks and securities firms) had not made sufficient progress in recruiting and promoting minority and women candidates for management-level positions. Concerns were also raised about the ability of minority-owned businesses to raise capital (i.e., debt or equity capital). GAO was asked to provide an overview on the status of diversity in the financial services industry. This report discusses (1) what available data show regarding diversity at the management level in the financial services industry from 1993 through 2004, (2) the types of initiatives that financial firms and related organizations have taken to promote workforce diversity and the challenges involved, and (3) the ability of minority- and women-owned businesses to obtain access to capital in financial markets and initiatives financial institutions have taken to make capital available to these businesses. GAO makes no recommendations

Book Workforce Diversity in the Financial Sector

Download or read book Workforce Diversity in the Financial Sector written by Emily Cruz and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the U.S. workforce has become increasingly diverse, many private- and public-sector entities recognise the importance of recruiting and retaining minorities and women for management-level positions to improve their business. The 2007-2009 financial crisis has renewed questions about commitment within the financial services industry (eg: banking and securities) to workforce diversity. The Dodd-Frank Act required that eight federal financial agencies and the Federal Reserve Banks implement provisions to support workforce and contractor diversity. This book reviews the trends and practices implemented since the beginning of the financial crisis and examines (1) workforce diversity in the financial services industry, the federal financial agencies, and Reserve Banks from 2007 through 2011 and (2) the efforts of the agencies and Reserve Banks to implement workforce diversity practices under the Dodd-Frank Act, including contracting.

Book Investigating Diversity in the Banking Sector in Europe The Performance and Role of Savings Banks

Download or read book Investigating Diversity in the Banking Sector in Europe The Performance and Role of Savings Banks written by and published by CEPS. This book was released on 2009 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book investigates the merits of a diverse banking system with a special focus on the performance and role of cooperative banks in seven European countries where they are prominent (Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain). The theoretical and empirical arguments that are developed in this book tend to support the view that it is economically beneficial to have stakeholder-value banks with a dual bottom-line function, such as cooperative banks. For those who accept this premise, it would suggest that policy-makers should not take or support actions that could jeopardise this valuable element of the financial system in various countries in Europe and of the emerging integrated European financial system."--Publisher description.

Book Investigating Diversity in the Banking Sector in Europe

Download or read book Investigating Diversity in the Banking Sector in Europe written by Rym Ayadi and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A midst stormy waters, financial systems develop and evolve. New institutional forms and instruments are invented and put into use. Some of them turn out to be successful while others disappear: a natural process of creative and dynamic competition argues for diversity. Diversity offers an optimal environment in which new ideas can come to life, existing ideas can evolve and old ideas make a comeback. In the aftermath of the financial crisis, the foundations of several decades of modern and innovative financial systems have suffered serious damage. This has triggered massive state interventions and has led authorities to revamp the regulatory structures and frameworks. While many voices have called for a return to more traditional approaches to banking and finance, no one has argued the merits of diversity. This book investigates the merits of a diverse banking system with a special focus on the performance and role of cooperative banks in seven European countries where they are prominent (Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain). The theoretical and empirical arguments that are developed in this book tend to support the view that it is economically beneficial to have stakeholder-value banks with a dual bottom-line function, such as cooperative banks. Book Top Management Team Diversity in Financial Services The Influence of Functional and Demographic Diversity on Firm Financial Performance

Download or read book Top Management Team Diversity in Financial Services The Influence of Functional and Demographic Diversity on Firm Financial Performance written by John Ratzan and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been exhaustive discussion on whether diversity in the TMT (Top Management Team) has an impact on the firm's financial performance. This research will analyze data from 59 Fortune 500 Financial Services firms' TMTs referencing Hambrick and Mason's Upper Echelon theory and review the TMT members' demographic composition as well as functional experience background attributes. We controlled for industry effects by focusing on the financial services sector, within which companies related to the banking sector are systemically essential to society. Another rationale for the focus on financial services is the degree with which this industry has been digitized, which we argue creates a more complex management environment. This research will compare the type of diversity within the TMT (functional vs. demographic) and the related impact on the firm's financial performance in terms of P/E (Price/Earnings) Ratio, ROA (Return on Assets) and ROE (Return on Equity). This is in the context of a dynamic digital marketplace that we hypothesize now rewards functional diversity in the TMT as this attribute in the team composition is critical to organizing the firm's competitive repertoires and strategy. The findings from the research suggest that functional diversity (TMT specialties such as marketing, finance, operations, etc.) is more significant than demographic diversity (gender, ethnicity, nationality). This study indicates that functional diversity had a positive correlation with financial performance in terms of the P/E Ratio and ROA, while demographic diversity had a slightly negative correlation, not having a significant impact on the firm's financial performance.

Book Institutional Diversity in Banking

Download or read book Institutional Diversity in Banking written by Ewa Miklaszewska and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-20 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comparative analysis of how post-crisis restructuring has affected the evolution and prospects of small, locally-oriented banks. The discussion focuses specifically on “small” European countries; that is, countries with diversified banking systems, with a strong presence of cooperative and other forms of local banks. Such countries include highly developed economies like Italy and emerging European economies, such as Poland. The authors stress the unique importance of local banks in generating credit for both households and firms, and hence in contributing to overall economic growth. Chapters cohere around the argument that although smaller banks fared better than their larger counterparts the recent financial crisis, they have been directly and indirectly discriminated against in post-crisis restructuring schemes, and, as such, face many operational and strategic challenges today. The contributors are a distinguished group of researchers with expert knowledge of the competitive positions of and opportunities for locally oriented banks, who combine theoretical and empirical perspectives on these topics.
