Book excerpt: Excerpt from Castellinaria: And Other Sicilian Diversions Again, in Chapter XVI it is stated that Giovanni Grasso enters in the third act of La M one Civile, whereas he enters in the second act. I have since seen the play several times, and, though it is tedious, it is not so much so as to justify a spectator in think ing any of its acts long enough for two. Book excerpt: Castellinaria and Other Sicilian Diversions by Henry Festing Jones It is probable that every book contains, besides misprints, some statements which the author would be glad to modify if he could. In Chapter V of Diversions in Sicily it is stated that the seating arrangements of the marionette theatre in Catania would be condemned by the County Council, which I believe to be correct, but, on visiting the theatre since, I find I was wrong in saying that there are no passages; I did not see them on my first visit because the audience hid them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of Old Sicily In the great affection for the land, the desire to possess some portion, however small, the unweary ing, almost loving devotion bestowed on its care by the Sicilian peasant, and in his pride for its exuberant production, the adoration and love for The Great Mother, the Earth Goddess, Demeter or Ceres, is clearly to be traced. Similarly the cult of Venus, who had her remarkable temple on Mount Eryx, with its celebrated festivals and depraved orgies, survives in the designation of various places and of persons. Book Picturesque Sicily Classic Reprint

Download or read book Picturesque Sicily Classic Reprint written by William Agnew Paton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Picturesque Sicily Sicily is little known to the world of to-day; few travellers visit the island; of American books on modern Sicily there are none, of English books there is a plentiful lack; and, even in these days of magazines and newspapers, but little information concerning the mysterious country finds its way into the public prints of Europe or the United States. Nevertheless, Sicily presents to historians and archaeologists a field the more tempting that it has been so little tilled, and a new world to travellers who delight in the romantic and the picturesque. The discovery in all parts of the island of a great number of Greek temples, theatres, and other edifices must excite the interest of antiquarians, while the mere sight of these grand ruins challenges the admiration of all beholders. To me these relics of classic times were revelations of a forgotten - indeed an almost unknown - era in the history of a highly civilized and art-loving people. With great surprise, I learned that there are more ruins of Greek temples in the island of Sicily than are to be found in the Peloponnesus, or in all Greece besides. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Tour in Italy and Sicily The hopes and expectations of the liberal party throughout the continent of Europe were at the highest in the spring of 1820. I was not then in Italy, and cannot exactly tell what the views of the natives were: nor, perhaps, should I have been better informed had I been there; for they are far less communicative than their transalpine neighbours, who play their political game with the cards on the table, and form conspiracies with ladies in the drawing-room, all for the sake of a little ready fame enjoyed on the spot. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from By-Paths in Sicily Eliza osborn putnam was born in Danvers, Mass, a descendant of families long native to that region. Her education, begun in Danvers and Salem schools, and furthered by graduation in Boston University, where she was an honor student in the classic tongues, well fitted her for a writer's career. After her marriage and removal to New York, Mrs. Heaton began newspaper work, in which she swiftly gained such success as was possible at a time when women in that profession were still few and looked upon as experimental; serving first as Special writer and afterward as a managing editor in newspaper and syndicate offices, until failing health made arduous tasks impossible.
