Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on the papers presented at a conference on "New Issues in Industrial Economics" held at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, June 8-10, 1987. The conference was organized by the Research Program in Industrial Economics (RPIE) in the Department of Economics at CWRU and was sponsored by The Cleveland Foundation, the Eaton Corporation, and The Standard Oil Company (later renamed BP America, Inc.). Their generous support is gratefully acknowledged. All of the papers have been revised, in several cases extensively, since their presentation at the conference. One of the primary reasons for organizing the conference was the concern that Industrial Economics has become too narrowly focused in most academic programs, largely being confined to Industrial Organization, i.e., issues of public policy towards enterprise with emphasis on antitrust and regulatory policy. This subject definition leaves out a number of interesting and important questions about how industries evolve over time, what the role of technological change (and organizational change) is in that process, and the associated structural changes within industries and firms. The object of this book is to derme these issues and suggest a framework within which they can be analyzed. I would like to thank all the conference participants for their contributions, particularly my colleagues at CWRU, Asim Erdilek and William S. Peirce, without whose encouragement and support the conference would not have taken place.

Book Trade Among Multinationals RLE International Business

Download or read book Trade Among Multinationals RLE International Business written by Donald C MacCharles and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-04 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1980s many developed countries were increasingly tempted to improve their national competitiveness by adopting protectionist policies. This book demonstrates that such policies would be mistaken and do serious damage to industries in the countries concerned. This book, based on extensive original research provides important empirical evidence concerning the proportion of all trade which is intra-industry trade; concerning the key role of multinationals in the growth of intra-industry trade and concerning the contrasting response – particularly between those companies which are multinational parents and those which are multinational subsidiaries – to the changing competitive conditions.

Book Producer Dynamics

Download or read book Producer Dynamics written by Timothy Dunne and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-05-15 with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Census Bureau has recently begun releasing official statistics that measure the movements of firms in and out of business and workers in and out of jobs. The economic analyses in Producer Dynamics exploit this newly available data on establishments, firms, and workers, to address issues in industrial organization, labor, growth, macroeconomics, and international trade. This innovative volume brings together a group of renowned economists to probe topics such as firm dynamics across countries; patterns of employment dynamics; firm dynamics in nonmanufacturing industries such as retail, health services, and agriculture; employer-employee turnover from matched worker/firm data sets; and turnover in international markets. Producer Dynamics will serve as an invaluable reference to economists and policy makers seeking to understand the links between firms and workers, and the sources of economic dynamics, in the age of globalization.

Book Foreign Direct Investment

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment written by A. E. Safarian and published by IRPP. This book was released on 1985 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the back cover: Foreign direct investment and multinational enterprises play a major but controversial role in Canada. Why do we see multinational enterprises use the subsidiary to transfer their techniques and products rather than national enterprises selling their products to foreigners through markets? What impacts do multinational enterprises have on the economic growth, balance of payments, industrial performance, and national independence of the home country? Professor Safarian addresses these questions, and others, as he surveys the research of Canadian economists in this field. Although economists have recently produced more and better analysis of foreign direct investment, the author maintains that additional research is required. The complex macro- and micro-economic impacts require more precise theoretical and empirical study....Sarafin concludes that economists and other social scientists must close the gaps in understanding foreign direct investment.

Book Managing the Multinational Subsidiary

Download or read book Managing the Multinational Subsidiary written by Hamid Etemad and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1986, is concerned with the changing world environment for multinational business and the relationships between multinational parent companies and their subsidiaries which will be necessary to meet the challenges that are being faced. The study argues that key changes to the environment are: the revolution in manufacturing which has permitted cheap production in one location of complicated products for a world market; ‘world product mandating’, whereby all a company’s country subsidiaries produce different product lines for the world market; pressure and incentives from host governments for technology transfer in their favour and for research and development facilities within their territory; the growth of highly efficient international trading and distribution intermediaries; and the complications of increased ‘barter’ trade arising from international debt problems and currency shortages. All this means that the management of multinational subsidiaries has to change. This book reviews the challenges and shows a way forward.

Book The Dynamics of Industrial Competition

Download or read book The Dynamics of Industrial Competition written by John R. Baldwin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-09-13 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dynamics of Industrial Competition describes the internal dynamics of industries using new and unique longitudinal data that make it possible to track firms over time. It provides a comprehensive picture of a number of aspects of firm turnover in North America that arise from the competitive process - the entry and the exit of firms, the growth and the decline of incumbent firms, and the merger process. Instantaneous and cumulative measures of market dynamics are provided. Since the forces contributing to competition are varied and industries are affected by heterogeneous forces, different aspects of firm turnover are considered in order to provide a comprehensive overview of the competitive process. Entry is divided into that portion coming from the creation of new plants and that portion arising from the acquisition of existing firms. Differences are drawn between the effects of related and unrelated acquisitions and between the effects of take-overs made by domestic and foreign firms. Differences between large- and small-firm activity are also investigated. The effects of turnover on productivity, efficiency, wage rates, and profitability are extensively model led. Using various measures of firm turnover to proxy the amount of competition, the study examines and contextualizes the relationship between industry performance and the intensity of the competitive process.

Book Synchronized Factories

Download or read book Synchronized Factories written by Juan S. Blyde and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this report is to examine the extent to which countries in Latin America and the Caribbean participate in global value chains and what are the drivers of such participation. Production processes have been increasingly fragmented worldwide. For example, the production of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner involves 43 suppliers located in 135 locations around the globe. There are many examples like the Dreamliner, from the 451 parts that go into the iPod to the less technologically intensive but still widespread multi-country production of a Barbie doll. All this reflects significant changes in the way world production is being reorganized across national borders. That is, for many goods, production has become a multi-country process in which different stages are carried out in specialized plants in different parts of the world. Countries which specialize in different stages of the production process are thus linked by these global value chains. For developing countries, a clear opportunity from the continuous international fragmentation of production arises in the form of participating in activities that were virtually not opened to them in the past. Therefore, the international fragmentation of production provides opportunities for trade diversification, an issue that can be of particular importance for Latin America and the Caribbean as the region’s export base is in general highly concentrated in a few industries and particularly biased towards natural-resource intensive sectors. The aim is to identify whether there is policy space for implementing strategies that allow countries to improve their position in regional and global value chains.

Book Instead of FIRA

Download or read book Instead of FIRA written by Samuel Wex and published by IRPP. This book was released on 1984 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the back cover: A president of a foreign-controlled subidiary recently commented: "As the Canadian subsidiary of a multi-national, we do not necessarily always operate to do the best we can for our local books. We are attempting to optimize the parent company's books.". How can this perspective be changed so that the Canadian subidiary can gain a heightened sense of its independence as a profit centre, without a change occurring in ownership or formal control relationships? Canadian public policy, contends Samuel Wex, should seek to encourage maximization of the subsidiary's profits by focusing on its productivity and its international competitiveness. Its performance should stamp it as a good corporate citizen. In order to bring about this change of perspective, different approaches will be needed to create autonomous subsidiaries that are entrepreneurial and outward looking. These approaches, if adopted, could lead to an open-dorr policy to new foreign investment that would be entrepreneurial and innovative.
