Download or read book Philadelphia s Old Southwark District written by Heather Gibson Moqtaderi and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-08 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southwark's deep history is tied to its relationship to the waterfront and the multitude of immigrant communities that settled its streets. The area along the banks of the Delaware River originally known as Philadelphia's Southwark District encompasses the present-day neighborhoods of Queen Village, Pennsport, and Dickinson Square West. The Washington Avenue Immigration Station, Southwark's counterpart to Ellis Island, was a testament to the waves of immigrants reaching America's shores in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Many of the immigrants who stayed in Philadelphia found inexpensive housing in Southwark and employment along the waterfront. Today, the neighborhoods of old Southwark continue to embrace diversity. Many of the area's historic houses still stand alongside newly built homes. While the construction of high-volume roadways cut off the neighborhoods from the waterfront, new efforts are reconnecting Southwark to the river through improved access points and attractive waterfront recreation areas.

Download or read book Against Time written by Johannes U. Hoeber and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Johannes Höber left Nazi Germany for America on November 12, 1938. His wife Elfriede and their nine-year-old daughter Susanne were unable to leave until September of the following year, after the outbreak of World War II. Fifty years later, Johannes and Elfriede's son found an old folder containing the long letters they exchanged during the many months there were separated. In these letters, Elfriede describes the worsening situation in Germany and Johannes describes his flight from Europe and his excited entry into American life. [This book] collects 135 of those letters with an introduction, extensive notes, and an epilogue that sets the letters in the context of their time. The letters tell the story of a couple driven from their home by the Nazis and forced to make a new life in a new country. In these letters you will discover two fine, passionate, and very different writers. Johannes' letters are carefully organized and precise, self-conscious and at the same time full of colorful detail and rich accounts of people, places, and events that convey his deep interest in the new world he observed. Elfriede's letters sometimes seem slightly chaotic, but they convey a full sense of her strong feelings as she navigated daily life in a frighteningly transformed Germany. Her letters are often laced with a breezy wit, though the humor is often ironic and sometimes witheringly sarcastic. Together, the letters portray the intense relationship of a fascinating couple in a critical time. [This book] is an important historical resource that reads like a novel. -- Inside cover flap.

Book excerpt: 2017 Button Poetry Prize Winner Through poems that utilize hypnotic religious imagery, Nava EtShalom carries readers through an emotional seascape; crashing over on waves of worship. Fortunately unpacks ideas about relationships with family, God, and the self. Each poem is pieced together carefully as a house of cards, and ends solid as a stitched spine. What is left in the body after identity has been assumed? Where does one go to reconcile generations of trauma? EtShalom, is unafraid to ask questions with seemingly impossible answers.
