Book A Key for Predicting Postfire Successional Trajectories in Black Spruce Stands of Interior Alaska

Download or read book A Key for Predicting Postfire Successional Trajectories in Black Spruce Stands of Interior Alaska written by Jill Frances Johnstone and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill) B.S.P) is the dominant forest cover type in interior Alaska and is prone to frequent, stand-replacing wildfires. Through impacts on tree recruitment, the degree of fire consumption of soil organic layers can act as an important determinant of whether black spruce forests regenerate to a forest composition similar to the prefire forest, or to a new forest composition dominated by deciduous hardwoods. Here we present a simple, rule-based framework for predicting fire-initiated changes in forest cover within Alaska's black spruce forests. Four components are presented: (1) a key to classifying potential site moisture, (2) a summary of conditions that favor black spruce self-replacement, (3) a key to predicting postfire forest recovery in recently burned stands, and (4) an appendix of photos to be used as a visual reference tool. This report should be useful to managers in designing fire management actions and predicting the effects of recent and future fires on postfire forest cover in black spruce forests of interior Alaska.

Book Field Guide to the Autecology of Selected Crop Trees and Competitor Species in Northeastern Ontario

Download or read book Field Guide to the Autecology of Selected Crop Trees and Competitor Species in Northeastern Ontario written by R. W. Arnup and published by Timmins, Ont. : Northeast Science & Technology. This book was released on 1995 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual contains information on seven commercially important tree species and on 44 plant species that may compete with these crop tree species in northeastern Ontario. The introduction provides background information for the species comparison tables and species summaries that follow, and explains the format of the manual. The tables give information on each species' autecology in the context of the Forest Ecosystem Classification (FEC) system for northeastern Ontario. In addition, each potential competitor is evaluated with respect to their competitive effects and mechanisms, their response to disturbance and silvicultural treatments, and their potential value for wildlife. The crop tree species are evaluated with respect to their response to competition and their ability to respond to release. Line diagrams are included to aid in field recognition. The appendix contains a glossary and a key to FEC names and descriptions.

Book Peatland Forestry

Download or read book Peatland Forestry written by Eero Paavilainen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a review and synthesis of boreal mire ecosystems including peat soil properties, mire hydrology, carbon and nutrient cycling, and classification of mire sites. The emphasis, however, is on peatland forests as a renewable natural resource. The approach originated in northern Europe, because there, especially in Finland, operational scale forest drainage has a long tradition based on research aiming to maintain and increase wood production on peatlands. Whenever relevant, a closer look is also given to other countries in Europe, Canada, and the USA. The results of recent studies on different environmental effects of peatland forestry are also discussed in detail.
