Book Life History Demography and Ecology of the Spiny Dogfish Squalus Acanthias in the Gulf of Alaska

This book was released on 2010 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) is a small, cosmopolitan shark species, common in sub-tropical and sub-arctic waters. The species is often targeted commercially in most areas of the world throughout it's range, and in some cases it is overfished or the subject of conservation concern. In the Gulf of Alaska, spiny dogfish are not targeted and not generally retained, but incidental catches can be high for this schooling species. Previously, biological parameters for spiny dogfish in the Gulf of Alaska were assumed from estimates for this specie's neighboring areas, including British Columbia and Washington State. The purpose of this study was to examine spiny dogfish in the Gulf of Alaska and estimate important parameters for stock assessment in four stages: (1) general biology, distribution, and life history; (2) modeling age and growth; (3) population demographic modeling; and (4) ecological interactions revealed by diet analysis. Spiny dogfish are similar in length in the Gulf of Alaska to neighboring regions, but mature at larger sizes and have a greater fecundity than reported elsewhere. There is high natural variability in estimated ages for the species, which is reflected in the poor lit of the growth models, possibly owing to measurement error from using the dorsal fin spine as the aging structure. A two-phase growth model provided the statistical best fit. However, questions were raised about the biological interpretation of the model and whether more traditional models (e.g., von Bertalanffy and Gompertz) may be more appropriate. Using the life-history and growth data, Leslie matrix type, age- and stage based demographic models were created to estimate sustainable fishing mortality rates and to examine the risk of harvest scenarios. Female Gulf of Alaska spiny dogfish can support up to a 3% annual harvest rate; fisheries that target juveniles have the greatest risk of population decline below threshold levels. Spiny dogfish are generalist opportunistic feeders that feed on whichever prey is available, however shrimp are the most important prey type, followed by cephalopods. Results of this study will be used in future ecosystem modeling and stock assessments for this species. Waking into account the history of targeted fisheries for the species on the U.S. east coast and in British Columbia and Washington, as well as the susceptibility of the species to overfishing, fishery managers will need to take a cautious approach should a target fishery develop in the Gulf of Alaska"--Leaves iii-iv.

This book was released on 2023-06-09 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the discussions held during the forty-fifth session of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean and twelfth session of the Committee on Administration and Finance. During the session, progress in activities related to fisheries, aquaculture, compliance and other strategic activities was reviewed. The Commission adopted 17 binding recommendations and four resolutions related to fisheries management and conservation, aquaculture and compliance. Moreover, the Commission adopted the revised GFCM Rules of Procedure and approved the proposal for the appointment of the new GFCM Executive Secretary. Finally, the Commission adopted its programme of work for the next intersession and approved its autonomous budget for 2023, 2024 and 2025, as well as a number of strategic actions to be funded through extrabudgetary resources. The Commission also endorsed the new Bureau of the Committee on Administration and Finance and extended the mandate of the Bureau of the Scientific Advisory Committee on Aquaculture until 2024.

Book Food and Feeding Habits of the Spiny Dogfish Squalus Acanthias Overwintering Off the Coast of North Carolina and the Effects on the Marine Community

Download or read book Food and Feeding Habits of the Spiny Dogfish Squalus Acanthias Overwintering Off the Coast of North Carolina and the Effects on the Marine Community written by Charles W. Bangley and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) are small, highly migratory sharks that occur in large numbers in North Carolina nearshore waters between November and March. This species has long been considered a pest by commercial fishermen, and is suspected of being a major source of predation mortality for economically-valuable species. The goals of this thesis research were 1.) to assess the efficiency of a non-lethal method for collecting stomach contents from dogfish, 2.) to determine if ontogeny, sex, and habitat selection influence the dogfish diet, 3.) to identify important prey species for dogfish overwintering off of North Carolina, and 4.) to describe the predatory and competitive interactions between spiny dogfish and another piscivore (striped bass, Moronoe saxatilis) during the overwintering period. To accomplish this, 399 spiny dogfish were captured in North Carolina waters during research bottom trawl surveys in February and March, 2010. Size and sex data were recorded for each dogfish, as well as depth, salinity, and temperature data at each station. Stomach contents were sampled by either dissection or stomach tube gastric lavage, in which an acrylic tube was inserted through the esophagus and flushed with water. Prey items were identified to the lowest possible taxa and quantified in terms of number, weight, and frequency of occurrence, then importance was determined by calculating the Index of Relative Importance for each taxa. Consumption during the sampling period was estimated using estimates of daily ration from previous studies. Stomach tube lavage proved to be efficient, and tube diameters within 10-20 mm of the shark's mouth width were nearly 100% efficient. Spiny dogfish showed significant differences in habitat selection by sex and size: females occupied significantly shallower, less saline, and cooler water than males, and dogfish began utilizing shallower depths between 600-650 mm total length (TL). The dogfish diet also shifted from an invertebrate-based to a teleost fish-based diet between 650-700 mm TL. Atlantic menhaden, (Brevoortia tyrannus) and bay anchovy (Anchoa mitchili) were the most important prey for dogfish sampled in this survey, though menhaden only dominated the diet in February. Dogfish predation may account for 14.08-3.56% of menhaden landings. Spiny dogfish and striped bass showed high spatial and potential dietary overlap, and dogfish consumed the equivalent of less than 0.91% of the striped bass stock biomass. Dogfish and striped bass are potential intraguild predators, but this relationship does not appear to affect the abundance and distribution of either species.
