Book excerpt: Abstract: "This thesis presents a simple, yet powerful, set of mechanisms for testing and debugging distributed applications consisting of modules that communicate through well-defined data interfaces. The tools allow default or programmer-defined functions to be attached to various communication events so that particular data values at interesting points in the program are made available for testing and debugging. The debugging status of each component of the communication interface can be controlled separately so that various debugging information can be turned on and off during program execution. By attaching breakpoints to programmer-defined functions in a standard debugger, fine-grained examination of each module of the application can be integrated with the coarse-grained communication debugging information provided by our tools."

To reduce the complexity, the idea of debugging-time process abstraction is introduced. Many existing distributed debuggers allow a programmer to group processes as an entity dynamically, in order to simplify the display of process structure. However, these grouped entities cannot be studied independently, like a module. The process abstraction discussed in this paper provides flexible grouping of processes into "clusters" with well-defined interfaces. Therefore, such a cluster can be decoupled from its external environment for independent study. Clearly, this requires that process abstraction must not distort the original program behaviour; event precedence is the essential behavioural information we have to retain.

Furthermore, it is the impact of embedded information technology that dictates the pace in most engineering domains. Nearly all technical products above a certain level of complexity are not only controlled but increasingly even dominated by their embedded computer systems. Traditionally, such embedded control systems have been implemented in a monolithic, centralized way. Recently, distributed solutions are gaining increasing importance. In this approach, the control task is carried out by a number of controllers distributed over the entire system and connected by some interconnect network, like fieldbuses. Such a distributed embedded system may consist of a few controllers up to several hundred, as in today's top-range automobiles. Distribution and parallelism in embedded systems design increase the engineering challenges and require new development methods and tools. This book is the result of the International Workshop on Distributed and Parallel Embedded Systems (DIPES'98), organized by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) Working Groups 10.3 (Concurrent Systems) and 10.5 (Design and Engineering of Electronic Systems). The workshop took place in October 1998 in Schloss Eringerfeld, near Paderborn, Germany, and the resulting book reflects the most recent points of view of experts from Brazil, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, and the USA. Book excerpt: This book describes an approach and supporting infrastructure to facilitate debugging the silicon implementation of a System-on-Chip (SOC), allowing its associated product to be introduced into the market more quickly. Readers learn step-by-step the key requirements for debugging a modern, silicon SOC implementation, nine factors that complicate this debugging task, and a new debug approach that addresses these requirements and complicating factors. The authors’ novel communication-centric, scan-based, abstraction-based, run/stop-based (CSAR) debug approach is discussed in detail, showing how it helps to meet debug requirements and address the nine, previously identified factors that complicate debugging silicon implementations of SOCs. The authors also derive the debug infrastructure requirements to support debugging of a silicon implementation of an SOC with their CSAR debug approach. This debug infrastructure consists of a generic on-chip debug architecture, a configurable automated design-for-debug flow to be used during the design of an SOC, and customizable off-chip debugger software. Coverage includes an evaluation of the efficiency and effectiveness of the CSAR approach and its supporting infrastructure, using six industrial SOCs and an illustrative, example SOC model. The authors also quantify the hardware cost and design effort to support their approach.
