Book The Desiring Modes of Being Black

Download or read book The Desiring Modes of Being Black written by Jean-Paul Rocchi and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-08-24 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critique of theory through literature that celebrates the diversity of black being, The Desiring Modes of Being Black explores how literature unearths theoretical blind spots while reasserting the legitimacy of emotional turbulence in the controlled realm of reason that rationality claims to establish. This approach operates a critical shift by examining psychoanalytical texts from the literary perspective of black desiring subjectivities and experiences. This combination of psychoanalysis and the politics of literary interpretation of black texts helps determine how contemporary African American and black literature and queer texts come to defy and challenge the racial and sexual postulates of psychoanalysis or indeed any theoretical system that intends to define race, gender and sexualities. The Desiring Modes of Being Black includes essays on James Baldwin, Sigmund Freud, Melvin Dixon, Essex Hemphill, Assotto Saint, and Rozena Maart. The metacritical reading they unfold interweaves African American culture, Fanonian and Caribbean thought, South African black consciousness, French theory, psychoanalysis, and gender and queer studies.

Book The Cultural Politics of Female Sexuality in South Africa

Download or read book The Cultural Politics of Female Sexuality in South Africa written by Henriette Gunkel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-01-21 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual identity has emerged into the national discourse of post-apartheid South Africa, bringing the subject of rights and the question of gender relations and cultural authenticity into the focus of the nation state’s politics. This book is a fascinating reflection on the effects of these discourses on non-normative modes of sexuality and intimacy and on the country more generally. While in 1996, South Africa became the first country in the world that explicitly incorporated lesbian and gay rights within a Bill of Rights, much of the country has continued to see homosexuality as un-African. Henriette Gunkel examines how colonialism and apartheid have historically shaped constructions of gender and sexuality and how these concepts have not only been re-introduced and shaped by understandings of homosexuality as un-African but also by the post-apartheid constitution and continued discourse within the nation.

Download or read book Historicizing Anti Semitism Proceedings of the International Conference on the Post September 11th New Ethnic Racial Configurations in Europe and the United States The Case of Anti Semitism Maison des Science de l Home MSH Paris June 29 30 2007 written by Mohammad H. Tamdgidi and published by Ahead Publishing House (imprint: Okcir Press). This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles collected in this Spring 2009 (VII, 2) issue of Human Architecture: Journal of the Sociology of Self-Knowledge entitled “Historicizing Anti-Semitism” were part of an international conference entitled, “The Post-September 11 New Ethnic/Racial Configurations in Europe and the United States: The Case of Anti-Semitism,” organized by Lewis Gordon and Ramón Grosfoguel at the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (MSH) in Paris on June 29–30, 2007. Part of a series inaugurated by a discussion on Islamophobia, they brought a majority Jewish group of scholars together in the hope of bringing to the forum a critical exchange and conversation among the participants. The articles gathered here do not represent a unified voice but those often unheard in discussions of anti-Semitism. The focus on anti-Semitism in this collection raises the question of how ancient and Medieval versions of anti-Jewish practices should be interpreted, especially since even the term “Semite” came about as an effort in eighteenth-century French and German scholarship to organize Arabic, Aramaic, and Hebrew under a single linguistic nomenclature, which was crystallized in the nineteenth century in the work of the French scholar Ernest Renan. Contributors include: Lewis R. Gordon (also as journal issue guest editor), Ramón Grosfoguel (also as journal issue guest editor), Eric Mielants (also as journal issue guest editor), David Ost, James Cohen, Santiago E. Slabodsky, Rabson Wuriga, Walter Mignolo, Ramón Grosfoguel, Marc H. Ellis, Etienne Balibar, Ivan Davidson Kalmar, Martine Chard-Hutchinson, Michael Löwy, Jean-Paul Rocchi and Mohammad H. Tamdgidi (also as journal editor-in-chief). Book criture et engagement aux tats Unis

Download or read book criture et engagement aux tats Unis written by Anne Ollivier-Mellios and published by Editions OPHRYS. This book was released on 2010 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Writing Queer Identities in Morocco

Download or read book Writing Queer Identities in Morocco written by Tina Dransfeldt Christensen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores queer identity in Morocco through the work of author and LGBT activist Abdellah Taïa, who defied the country's anti-homosexuality laws by publicly coming out in 2006. Engaging postcolonial, queer and literary theory, Tina Dransfeldt Christensen examines Taïa's art and activism in the context of the wider debates around sexuality in Morocco. Placing key novels such as Salvation Army and Infidels in dialogue with Moroccan writers including Driss Chraïbi and Abdelkebir Khatibi, she shows how Taïa draws upon a long tradition of politically committed art in Morocco to subvert traditional notions of heteronormativity. By giving space to silenced or otherwise marginalised voices, she shows how his writings offer a powerful critique of discourses of class, authenticity, culture and nationality in Morocco and North Africa.

Download or read book D passer le cadre national des Lieux de m moire written by Benoît Majerus and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
