The book argues that meeting this challenge requires a holistic understanding of the context-specific factors that influence economic behavior and structures in poor countries. Contextual Development Economics approaches this task by offering a methodology that allows analysing the dynamic interrelations between economic, cultural and historical determinants of economic life in low-income countries. The book starts with an empirical inquiry into the economic characteristics of low-income countries that create the context by which the specific forms of organising economic activity in these countries are determined. It then looks at how different generations of development economists sought to explain economic realities in low-income countries from the 1940s through today. The book finally synthesises the results from this empirical and methodological analysis with insights from an inquiry into contributions of the German Historical School, from which it borrows the concept of the economic style as a methodological alternative to the universal and hence often irrelevant models of mainstream development economics. This book offers a promising perspective for the future of development economics that will be of interest to researchers and development practitioners alike. It will also be relevant for academics and students with an interest in applications of the method and concepts of the Historical School to contemporary problems.

The most comprehensive dictionary of the Hoc?k language (formerly known as Winnebago) to date, this bidirectional Hoc?k-English/English-Hoc?k dictionary contains approximately 4,000 entries. Hoc?k is a highly endangered North American Indian language spoken by less than two hundred people in different parts of Wisconsin and Nebraska. This dictionary and volume 2 of the Hoc?k Teaching Materials are the outcome of a large project on the documentation of the Hoc?k language, which was carried out in close cooperation with the Hoc?k Language Division, a tribal institution for the stabilization and revitalization of the Hoc?k language in Mauston, Wisconsin. The volume contains a lengthy introduction to the basics of the phonology, orthography, and morphology of the Hoc?k language, written in a learner-friendly, easy-to-access style, explaining linguistic terms so that it can be used by nonlinguists. The individual lexical entries of the words are organized according to the standards of modern lexicography, containing all necessary phonetic, grammatical, and semantic information for the use of the Hoc?k words. In addition, every word is provided with about three Hoc?k example sentences in order to demonstrate the typical use of the words in different contexts. Also of interest are a frequency list of all words in the dictionary counted on the basis of a large corpus of Hoc?k texts, and a thesaurus of all Hoc?k words in the dictionary. A valuable source of information on the Hoc?k language and culture, this work will appeal to linguists in general, and specialists in Native American languages, as well as anthropologists and all learners of the Hoc?k language. Collaboration between the Ho-Chunk Nation and University of Erfurt linguists yielded this and a second volume intended to teach the nations language. The son of a baptized Jewish father and a Protestant mother, Willy Wiemokli (1908–1983) was declared a half-Jew by the laws of the Third Reich, and because of this, he and his father were briefly interned in Buchenwald. Although his father was eventually executed in Auschwitz in 1943, Willy went on to become an accountant for J. A. Topf & Söhne, the manufacturer of the ovens used in the death of his father as well as thousands of others in concentration camps. Persecuted by the Nazis, he also participated, minimally, in the Nazi-led genocide. This paradox and Willy’s liminal status gives his fascinating biography historical significance, adding a new dimension to our understanding of what the Nazi race policies meant to ordinary Germans. In this brief telling of an otherwise average man’s life, Schüle and Sowade reveal the pervasive and long-term effect of the race laws. Based solely on archival records, Willy’s story gives insight into the muddled and impossible choices of vulnerable individuals living under the Third Reich and the blurred boundaries between victim, bystander, and accomplice.

However, its attempts to do so have been met with scepticism, and there is no unequivocal answer to the question of whether or not Turkey is accepted and viewed as European. This question is of particular interest in the case of Germany, the engine of the European Union’s economy which is not only home to millions of Turkish immigrants, but also has a history of cooperation with Turkey unique among European countries. With its analysis of West German prestige newspapers printed between 1950 and 1975, this study looks into how Germans viewed Turkey from a cultural and political perspective during a critical period of Turkish integration with the West and Europe, and compares this with perceptions of Greece, whose path to Europe was far less problematic by virtue of its classical legacy and Christian heritage.

The author shows that institutions matter as determinants of crisis resilience - however in a different way than predicted by the prominent theories of Olson (1982) and North, Wallis, Weingast (2009), as the crisis was most severe in developed countries with democratic political institutions, rule of law and restrained regulations. The empirical results support theoretical predictions only within the sub-group of developed countries, where rule of law and restrained regulations show a positive association with crisis resilience.

One purpose of the book is to understand how the radical interpretation came to South Asia. The book also explains how theories about jihad are influenced by the political and social circumstances of the period and how these insights feed into practice legitimizing militant movements called jihad for that period.
