Book Disrespected Neighbo u rs

Download or read book Disrespected Neighbo u rs written by Uwe Zagratzki and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neighbourly relations frequently position a “self” against an “Other”. This is the case for both individuals and nations, and, indeed, within the various cultural groups of a nation. Our racial, ethnic, social, or gender identities are often created in demarcating ourselves by stereotyping the Other. Disrespect of the immediate neighbour based on stereotypical pre-conceptions and cultural biases may lie dormant for a long time and then, as shown in recent conflicts around the globe, suddenly surface due to changed economic and political conditions. Media, including films and fictional as well as non-fictional texts, feature prominently in producing, propagating, and maintaining cultural difference and stereotypes in ideologically effective ways. This volume analyses re-presentations from various angles, as it comprises articles dealing with ethnic groups and neighbo(u)rhoods from three world areas, as well as genres and media instrumental to their respective cultural stereotyping. This focus on literary and media representations of the neighbo(u)rly Other from miscellaneous cultural environments results in a comprehensive understanding of analogies and differences in the mechanisms of production and perception of stereotypes. Addressing the manifold discourses at the heart of stereotyping the familiar Other, the book also points to their far-reaching repercussions on lived cultural practices.

Book Money and Violence

Download or read book Money and Violence written by Erik Bähre and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-06-30 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ethnographic study reveals how financial self-help groups (burial societies and credit groups) are islands of hope for Xhosa migrants living in the townships and squatter camps of Cape Town, South Africa. Many are caught up in a sea of insecurity, unemployment, murder, rape, AIDS, and social conflict, entangled with apartheid politics as well as post-apartheid development. Particularly women create these de-politicized social spaces to feel secure and trusted, and know that money is subject to their control. This intimate account challenges romanticized views on urban poverty and solidarity groups. It explores the anxiety among members, the fragility of trust and solidarity, as well as the emergence of conflicts with kin, household members, and neighbours, over desperately needed money.

Book Islamism Crisis and Democratization

Download or read book Islamism Crisis and Democratization written by Hussein Solomon and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-22 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book systematically assesses the value systems of active Muslims around the globe. Based on a multivariate analysis of recent World Values Survey data, it sheds new light on Muslim opinions and values in countries such as Indonesia, Iran, Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey. Due to a lack of democratic traditions, sluggish economic growth, escalating religiously motivated violence, and dissatisfaction with ruling elites in many Muslim countries, the authors identify a crisis and return to conservative values in the Muslim world, including anti-Semitism, religious and sexual intolerance, and views on democracy and secularism, business and economic matters. Based on these observations, they offer recommendations for policymakers and civil societies in Muslim countries on how to move towards tolerance, greater democratization and more rapid economic growth.

Seventy-seven-year-old Dorothy Darling has lived in Shelley House for longer than anyone else, and if you believe the other tenants, she's as cantankerous and vindictive as they come. Dorothy may spend her days spying on the neighbours, but she has a closely guarded secret herself - and a good reason for barely leaving her home. When their building faces demolition, sworn enemies Kat and Dorothy become unlikely allies in their quest to save their historic home; and even less likely detectives when they suspect that foul play is coming from within Shelley House . . . Download or read book Boston Neighbours In Town and Out written by Agnes Blake Poor and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-12-20 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boston Neighbors in Town and Out by Agnes Blake Poor is about a small club of young women and new mothers who come together to discuss their lives and keep one another company. Excerpt: "I should be glad to tell a story if I only knew one, but I don't. Some people say that one experience is as interesting as another and that any real life is worth hearing about, but I think it must make some little difference who the person is. But if I really must tell one, and since you all have told yours, and such nice ones and anything is better than nothing when we are kept in all the morning by pouring rain, with nothing to do, because we came only for a week, and did not expect it to rain, I will try and tell you about our Tolstoi Club, because that was rather like a story—at least it might have been like one if things had turned out a little differently."
