Book Philosophy in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries

Download or read book Philosophy in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries written by Constance Blackwell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 695 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers an important re-evaluation of early modern philosophy. It takes issue with the received notion of a ’revolution’ in philosophical thought in the 17th-century, making the case for treating the 16th and 17th centuries together. Taking up Charles Schmitt’s formulation of the many ’Aristotelianisms’ of the period, the papers bring out the variety and richness of the approaches to Aristotle, rather than treating his as a homogeneous system of thought. Based on much new research, they provide case studies of how philosophers used, developed, and reacted to the framework of Aristotelian logic, categories and distinctions, and demonstrate that Aristotelianism possessed both the flexibility and the dynamism to exert a continuing impact - even among such noted ’anti-Aristotelians’ as Descartes and Hobbes. This constant engagement can indeed be termed ’conversations with Aristotle’.

Book Cognitive Issues in the Long Scotist Tradition

Download or read book Cognitive Issues in the Long Scotist Tradition written by Daniel Heider and published by Schwabe Verlag (Basel). This book was released on 2023-02-09 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late-scholastic school of Scotism (after John Duns Scotus, † 1308) left considerable room for disagreement. This volume innovatively demonstrates just how vividly Scotist philosophers and theologians discussed cognitive matters from the 14th until the 17th century. It further shows how the Scotist ideas were received in Protestant and Reformed milieus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francisco Suárez is arguably the most important Neo-Scholastic philosopher and a vital link in the chain leading from medieval philosophy to that of the Renaissance and the Enlightenment. Long neglected by the Anglo-Saxon philosophical community, this sixteenth-century Jesuit theologian is now an object of intense scholarly attention. In this volume, Daniel Schwartz brings together essays by leading specialists which provide detailed treatment of some key themes of Francisco Suárez's philosophical work: God, metaphysics, meta-ethics, the human soul, action, ethics and law, justice and war. The authors assess the force of Suárez's arguments, set them within their wider argumentative context and single out influences and appraise competing interpretations. The book is a useful resource for scholars and students of philosophy, theology, philosophy of religion and history of political thought and provides a rich bibliography of secondary literature.

Book Dynamic Structure of Reality

Download or read book Dynamic Structure of Reality written by Nelson R. Orringer and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic Structure of Reality makes available in English some of the most mature thought of the modern Spanish philosopher Xavier Zubiri. He first presented this material as a set of 1968 public lectures in Madrid. They were collected, edited, and published in 1989 as Estructura dinámica de la realidad. In 1962 Zubiri had published Sobre la esencia (On essence), a work of metaphysics that was praised by critics with one qualification: its treatment of reality was too static. The 1968 course was devised as a response to those critics. Dynamic Structure of Reality retraces the road Hegel traveled concerning the creation of a self and how that self is realized by an interplay between spirit and nature. Like his great predecessor José Ortega y Gasset, and like his great Jewish contemporary Emmanuel Levinas, Zubiri takes religion in all seriousness and locates its questions within the questions of modern philosophy. In harmony with science, he advances a new idea of becoming. Reality, not being, becomes. As reality’s traits are revealed, in different degrees, reality resembles God, the universal self-giver. Zubiri systematically touches on many disciplines to show the varieties of self-giving--throughout the universe--of structural dynamism.

Book Categories and What Is Beyond Volume 2

Download or read book Categories and What Is Beyond Volume 2 written by Gyula Klima and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For medieval thinkers, the distinction between intentional and extra-mental reality does not precipitate a Kantian turn to the subject. Rather, they allow that metaphysics and natural philosophy study things as they are and leave to logic the investigation of things as conceived. Within this broad scheme, there is much room for debate regarding whether and to what extent Aristotle’s categories comprise an accurate picture of what types of things exist. Closely tied to consideration of what types of things exist are questions concerning how language reflects the relations that hold among these things. For instance, both substances and the accidents parasitic on their existence are said to be, but not in the same way. The essays in Categories, and What is Beyond draw on the philosophical traditions of late antiquity and the middle ages to study what types of things there are, the extent to which our knowledge of these entities is accurate, how (and whether) the semantics of analogy are competent to adjust for the difference and diversity found amongst analogates, and some ways in which these considerations bear on our ability to learn and speak of God.

Book Metaphysical Disputation II

Download or read book Metaphysical Disputation II written by Francisco Suarez and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2023-01-16 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francisco Suárez (1548-1617) was one of the most important philosophers and theologians of early modern Aristotelian scholasticism. Although Suárez spent most of his academic career as a professor of theology, he is better known today for his Metaphysical Disputations (Salamanca, 1597). The present volume contains a facing-page English translation of Metaphysical Disputation II, which is devoted to the nature of real being, the subject of metaphysics. In it, Suárez is especially concerned, first, to argue there is a single nature of being common to all real beings, and second, to show what this nature consists in. The Latin text contained in this volume introduces a significant number of corrections to the text of the Vivès edition, the one standardly used by scholars of Suárez, and thus more faithfully reproduces the text of the first edition. The volume also contains a lengthy introduction that provides a detailed survey of the disputation’s principal claims and arguments.

Book The Missing Public Disputations of Jacobus Arminius

Download or read book The Missing Public Disputations of Jacobus Arminius written by Keith D. Stanglin and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-11-12 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacobus Arminius (1559-1609) composed 61 public disputations during his brief tenure as professor of theology at Leiden University, 36 of which have never before been collected and published, and have been neglected by scholars for four centuries. This critical edition supplements the works of Arminius by presenting these texts in the original Latin, complete with notes and summaries in English. The texts are preceded by a helpful introduction to the genre of theological disputations. In addition, the question of disputation authorship is treated exhaustively for the first time, demonstrating Arminius's primary authorship of these documents.

Book On Real Relation

Download or read book On Real Relation written by Francisco Suárez and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relation is at the heart of any philosophy but especially of Aristotelian philosophy. It is also at the heart of theological understanding of the central Christian doctrine of the Trinity of Persons in God. Arguably the greatest, and certainly the most influential, Jesuit philosopher-theologian of all time, Francisco Suarez (1548-1617), would by any estimate qualify to explain relation. While he has treated the subject often in his published writings, his best and most systematic treatment of its myriad dimensions will be found in his famous Disputationes metaphysicae in two places. Earlier translated into English by the translator of the present volume, Disputation 54, Section 6, gives Suarez's teaching on mind-dependent relations. This translation now of the eighteen Sections of Disputation 47 contains his careful, broad, and deep thought on mind-independent, both categorical and transcendental, relations. While Suarez presents his teaching in a systematic way, he intentionally wraps it around a first-rate explanation of Aristotle's enigmatic treatment of the category of Aristotle's enigmatic treatment of the category of relation in the Perihermeneias and the Metaphysics. For that explanation alone, the present volume is timelessly valuable. But as any serious reader will soon see, its value only begins there.
