Book excerpt: From the authors of the best-selling Habits of Mind... A costly gap exists between what we claim to value as educational essentials and how we evaluate results. In Dispositions, Arthur L. Costa and Bena Kallick present a game-changing look at why and how to "mind the gap". The authors’ Habits of Mind writings have influenced educational policy worldwide. Dispositions incorporates new cognitive science that shows how influencing students’ mental habits is their key to finding meaning in classroom content. Topics include: Making dispositions come alive in the minds of students Shifting the thinking of educational leaders, parents, politicians and the public How to align day-to-day classroom practices with larger dispositional outcomes Featuring techniques for integrating dispositional learning into the Common Core, Dispositions is Costa and Kallick’s most indispensable work on 21st Century learning. "Education must include the development of the human elements in our children. Costa and Kallick present a reasonable, practical and positive alternative—the cultivation of dispositional thinking, the very core of being human." Foreword by Yong Zhao

Book Revision Cognitive and Instructional Processes

Download or read book Revision Cognitive and Instructional Processes written by Linda Allal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revision Revisited LINDA ALLAL* & LUCILE CHANQUOY** *University ofGeneva, SWitzerland, **UniversityofNantes, France Revision is a fundamental component of the writing process. So fundamental that for some specialists writing is largely a matter of revising, or as Murray (1978) stated, "Writing is rewriting..." (p. 85). Experience with writing does not, however, automatically translate into increased skill in revision. Learning to revise is a lengthy, complex endeavor. Beginning writers do little revision spontaneously and even experienced writers encounter difficulties in attempting to improve the quality of their texts (Fitzgerald, 1987). Although revision has been extensively dealt with in the writing and learning-to write literature, this book proposes to "revisit" theory and research in this area through a series of new contributions. The introduction begins with an overview of what revision encompasses. It then examines two parallel interrogations that under lie the chapters assembled here, namely: (1) What are the implications of research on cognitive processes for instruction in revision? (2) What are the questions raised by instructional research for the investigation of cognitive processes of revision? A final section presents the chapters of this book.

Book Developing European Regions

Download or read book Developing European Regions written by Maura Adshead and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002: Developing European Regions? presents a novel approach to the analysis of European regional policy and uses network analysis as an innovative instrument to understand the integration process within individual countries. The book develops a convincing argument about the different manifestation of integration in Ireland, Britain and Germany resulting from the implementation of European Union (EU) structural policy in specific domestic contexts. Employing a distinctive methodology designed to overcome some of the problems associated with cross-national comparison and studies of European integration, the case studies chosen enable a substantive comparison of the impact of EU involvement in policy and associated developments in governance upon federal and unitary systems of governance. Suitable for audience of area specialists, regional politics, sub-national governance, comparative politics and public administration, public policy analysis and network theory, as well as European studies and European integration theory, the book is an extremely useful contribution to the literature.

Book Climate Change isn t Everything

Download or read book Climate Change isn t Everything written by Mike Hulme and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-06-13 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The changing climate poses serious dangers to human and non-human life alike, though perhaps the most urgent danger is one we hear very little about: the rise of climatism. Too many social, political and ecological problems facing the world today – from the Russian invasion of Ukraine to the management of wildfires – quickly become climatized, explained with reference to ‘a change in the climate’. When complex political and ethical challenges are so narrowly framed, arresting climate change is sold as the supreme political challenge of our time and everything else becomes subservient to this one goal. In this far-sighted analysis, Mike Hulme reveals how climatism has taken hold in recent years, becoming so pervasive and embedded in public life that it is increasingly hard to resist it without being written off as a climate denier. He confronts this dangerously myopic view that reduces the condition of the world to the fate of global temperature or the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide to the detriment of tackling serious issues as varied as poverty, liberty, biodiversity loss, inequality and international diplomacy. We must not live as though climate alone determines our present and our future.

Book Understanding the Quality Use of Research Evidence in Education

Download or read book Understanding the Quality Use of Research Evidence in Education written by Mark Rickinson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the question of how to understand quality use of research evidence in education, or what it means to use research evidence well. Internationally there are widespread efforts to increase the use of research evidence within educational policy and practice. Such efforts raise important questions about how we understand not just the quality of evidence, but also the quality of its use. To date, there has been wide-ranging debate about the former, but very little dialogue about the latter. Based on a five-year study with schools and school systems in Australia, this book sheds new light on: why clarity about quality of use is critical to educational improvement; how quality use of research evidence can be framed in education; what using research well involves and looks like in practice; what quality research use means for individuals, organisations and systems; and what aspects of using research well still need to be better understood. This book will be an invaluable resource for professionals within and beyond education who want to better understand what using research evidence well means and involves and how it can be supported.

Book Learning to Live with Datafication

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As digital technologies play a key role across all aspects of our societies and in everyday life, teaching students about data is becoming increasingly important in schools and universities around the world. Bringing together international case studies of innovative responses to datafication, this book sets an agenda for how teachers, students and policy makers can best understand what kind of educational intervention works and why. Learning to Live with Datafication is unique in its focus on educational responses to datafication as well as critical analysis. Through case studies grounded in empirical research and practice, the book explores the dimensions of datafication from diverse perspectives that bring in a range of cultural aspects. It examines how educators conceptualise the social implications of datafication and what is at stake for learners and citizens as educational institutions try to define what datafication will mean for the next generation. Written by international leaders in this emerging field, this book will be of interest to teacher educators, researchers and post graduate students in education who have an interest in datafication and data literacies.
