He was raised to be a smart baseball player from his hometown California neighborhood of Wilmington, also known as 'The Heart of The Harbor'. Despite attending grade school at nearby Holy Family Catholic Church, Ruben went the way of foolish & dangerous behaviors towards the end of his teens. This looked to others as though his life had slowly spiraled into an abyss. As he grew older, Ruben began to write poetry for his family, friends & cellmates; and his poems were found to have documented an explicitly honest account of a journey thru dishonesty...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dishonesty in Behavioral Economics provides a rigorous and comprehensive overview of dishonesty, presenting state-of-the-art research that adopts a behavioral economics perspective. Throughout the volume, contributors emphasize the effects of psychological, social, and cognitive factors on the decision-making process. In contrast to related titles, Dishonesty in Behavioral Economics emphasizes the importance of empirical research methodologies. Its contributors demonstrate how various methods applied to similar research questions can lead to different results. This characteristic is important because, of course, it is difficult to obtain reliable measures of dishonesty. Reviews many key issues in the literature around lying, cheating, fraudulence, and deception Covers both state-of-the-art methods and data collection mechanisms (e.g., laboratory experiments, field experiments, online surveys) Discusses novel interdisciplinary research findings and from them proposes new avenues of research

Book The Tangled Web They Weave

Download or read book The Tangled Web They Weave written by Ivan L. Preston and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ivan L. Preston, recognized as a preeminent scholar of the legal dimensions of American advertising, has written The Tangled Web They Weave for the ordinary consumer as well as for advertisers and trade regulators. His frank aim is to demonstrate how advertising can better serve its audience. Advertising, Preston points out, is full of falsity that is quite legal. Indeed, clever presentation of lies can make advertising entertaining to consumers, and Preston provides lively examples and anecdotes of such cases. The problem with falsity in advertising, he argues, is not so much with the bald lie as it is with deception. It is in this thicket of implied claims that he shows us the dangers and indicates the need for regulatory adjustment. Preston takes us down the slippery slope, from the high ground of honest product claims to the unscrupulous bottom-of-the-barrel claims that are wholly false. Along the way he documents the subtle misrepresentations, half and lesser truths, and exploitations of our gullibility that abound in contemporary advertising. The cases he describes are sometimes comic and sometimes shocking and infuriating. Preston's agenda is not merely to cry Foul! He sees advertising as performing not only a legitimate but an important public service. It is in all our interests, therefore, to perfect and not just pillory. As he concludes, "It is the time to see a way to serve society by creating a standard of personal and corporate credibility under which all advertisers, regulators, and consumers should want to live."

Book A Lack of Offensive Spirit

Download or read book A Lack of Offensive Spirit written by Alan MacDonald and published by Alan MacDonald. This book was released on 2008 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A Lack of Offensive Spirit?' is a companion volume to Alan MacDonald's recently revised book 'Pro Patria Mori - the 56th (1st London) Division at Gommecourt, 1st July 1916'. The attack of the 46th (North Midland) Division at Gommecourt on the first day of the Battle of the Somme is one of the most controversial incidents of the Great War. The men were effectively accused of cowardice ("A lack of offensive spirit") and of being drunk and the Division was the only one subject to a Court of Inquiry into its conduct. Their commander, Maj. Gen. Eddie Stuart Wortley, was the only General sacked as a result of the catastrophe of the 1st July 1916, a day when the British Army suffered its worst casualties in a single day in its entire history. `A Lack of Offensive Spirit?' tells the story of Stuart Wortley and the 46th Division from the opening of the war, through the tragedy of the Hohenzollern Redoubt and then, day by day, through the preparations for the attack on Gommecourt. The attack itself is described using the dozens of eyewitness reports collected after the battle as well as official documents and post-war recollections and memoirs. The German perspective on the battle is also extensively covered with information drawn from numerous German unit histories. The conduct of the Court of Inquiry and of Stuart Wortley's desperate efforts to clear his name are covered in detail as well as the tragic fate of the hundreds of officers and men missing, dead and wounded. `A Lack of Offensive Spirit?' is fully indexed, contains over 20 maps and plans, 45 photographs and contains extensive appendices (including a Roll of Honour of both British and German dead).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1933, the original purpose of this book was to draw attention to the international aspects of monetary policy and to put forward the case for international co-operation in the monetary sphere. Paul Einzig highlights the negative impact that a lack of international spirit in monetary policy can have and promotes an increased understanding amongst nations. He discusses the failure of the Monetary and Economic Conference of June-July 1933 and expresses his belief that the monetary crisis of the time could have been solved, if not through an agreement, then through the inevitable inflationary effect of the increasing economic difficulties.

Book The Tangled Fire of William Faulkner

Download or read book The Tangled Fire of William Faulkner written by William Van O'Connor and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1954 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tangled Fire of William Faulkner was first published in 1953. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. Out of the tangled fire that is the genius of William Faulkner's fiction, this critical study draws as coherent and highly original view of the writer's achievement. By placing Faulkner in his Mississippi background and analyzing his novels and short stories in chronological sequence, O'Conner demonstrates a major thesis that sets this apart from other studies. It is his interpretation that Faulkner's fiction is not all of a piece, does not merely develop the conviction of the legend of the Old South, but is, rather, marked by diversity of theme.

Book The Tangled Brain

  • Pages : 390 pages

Download or read book The Tangled Brain written by Dick Pitt and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of being human is to learn new ideas, reject them or modify them and pass them on. What we choose to do with an idea depends on who we are; our gender, ethnicity, earlier ideas, what we do for a living, etc. That is, ideas spread to our minds depending on whether they are fit for the environment or not. Descent with modification and selection is the central feature of both biological and ideological evolution. An evolutionary approach helps us to understand such issues as changes in Christianity over time, the mimicry of colonial regimes, the cycles of corruption that are followed by purges in the police and business, and much more. This approach can even shed a light on the belief that the end of the world is nigh. However, there are major differences between ideological and biological evolution. The roles played by consciousness and powerful individuals or groups cannot be ignored. The book contains examples that highlight the similarities and differences between biological and ideological evolution. We have a rich ideological flora and fauna in our minds. Hopefully, an understanding of how they got there will help us distinguish between beautiful flowers and pernicious weeds.
