Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Stomach With Special Reference to Treatment The attention of the reader is drawn to pathologic conditions due to ptosis of the abdominal viscera, as the author has obtained good results in the treatment of gastroptosis by employing the principle of mechanical support. Achylia Gastrica is considered under the head of Chronic Gastritis because the latter involves the diminution and eventual cessation of gastric secretion. The author wishes to make acknowledgment of his indebtedness to the many American practitioners who have contributed so greatly to the advancement of gastroenterology, and to the foreign writers whose scientific achievements have received approval nowhere more cordially than in this country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Stomach and Their Relation to Other Diseases In writing this book no attempt has been made to avoid the personal note; informality of style may be excused because this is largely a record of personal experience. However, conclusions are based not only on experience in my clinic, but on my acquaintance with the clinics of colleagues whose work is deservedly valued. When it has served a special purpose, I have referred to the publications of others, sometimes liberally, but usually without intent to summarize prevailing professional opinion. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Functional and Organic Diseases of the Stomach IT is some years since a systematic treatise on diseases of the stomach was published in English. No apology is there fore necessary for the issue of this work. During the past few years great advances have been made not. Only in patho logical chemistry, but in pathology generally; and these advances specially affect the study of functional and organic diseases of the stomach, inasmuch as the changes in the processes of digestion in disease have been studied during life, with the result of throwing great light not only on the symptoms, but also on the treatment of these diseases. Since it is possible to study changes in secretion, and, to a less extent, those in motor activity of the stomach during life, the functional disorders of the organ can be with advantage discussed in a separate treatise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stomach: Its Disorders, and How to Cure Them AN eminent comparative anatomist defines an animal as a stomach with various organs appended, a definition which presents in a very clear light the relative importance of. The stomach in the association of the organs and structures which constitute the human as well as the animal body. The stomach must certainly be regarded as the center of the nutritive proc esses of the body, and any derangement of its functions must therefore result in disorder of the entire organism. The close relation between the condition of the stomach and that of the mind has been observed even by the most primitive nations, and has led some of them to regard the stomach as the veritable seat of the soul. There is sound truth in the ancient German adage, As a man eateth, so is he. It may truly be said that disorders of digestion are the most prevalent of all human ills, and investigators within the last twenty years have been making more and more clear the fact that the great majority of diseases are primarily due to derange ment of the digestive processes. The remarkable researches of Professor Bouchard, of Paris, and others, have shown that such diseases as consumption, typhoid fever. And cholera, as well as Bright's disease and analogous maladies, are indirectly, if not directly, due to a disordered condition of the stomach, as the result of which the defenses of the body are broken down, and infection rendered possible. Notwithstanding the great prevalence of stomach disorders, and the large amount of knowledge and experience which have been accumulated by the profession in regard to them within the last few years, it is nevertheless true that no other class of curable disorders has more frequently baffled the best directed efforts of medical practitioners. This is doubtless owing to the imperfect knowledge of the processes of digestion and of the nature of the disorders to which the digestive organs are subject which has prevailed from the earliest times to within a comparatively brief period. Within the last score of years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Diseases of the Stomach and Their Surgical Treatment Classic Reprint

Download or read book Diseases of the Stomach and Their Surgical Treatment Classic Reprint written by Arthur William Mayo Robson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Stomach and Their Surgical Treatment The present work took its origin in the Hunterian Lectures delivered by one of us at the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1900. The attention called to the subject by those lectures resulted in a large increase in our experience of the various gastric conditions amenable to surgical treat ment. To deal fully with subjects lightly touched upon in the lectures, to expand, in fact, those lectures into a volume, was a work which the lecturer unaided would have been hard pressed to accomplish in the space of time within which it was felt desirable to publish the volume. A collaboration see'med therefore desirable, and as we had been associated in hospital work more or less closely since 1887, when our relative positions were those of Honorary Officer and House Surgeon, the present collaboration seemed both natural and appropriate. For every statement made in the book we jointly hold ourselves responsible. The whole work has undergone a careful revision by both Of us, and much of it has been frequently discussed while in preparation and after comple tion. Book Ulcer of the Stomach Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ulcer of the Stomach Classic Reprint written by Charles Bolton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ulcer of the Stomach The ultimate object of our investigations into the causes of, and abnormal processes concerned in, a disease is the scientific treatment of our patients, the aim of which is the restoration to the normal of the morbid processes constituting the malady. In order to do this, it is essential to know what these processes are, and the relative part that each individually plays in the production of the clinical phenomena of the disease. The physician is unable effectively to study these processes of disease in man, because, although our methods of clinical research have vastly improved during the past few years, they are yet very limited, and particularly those dependent upon experiment and not upon mere observation. Again, when the case comes under observation, so many processes are usually disordered together that it is impossible to say which are of primary and which of secondary importance. It is, therefore, essential in order to study the causes of, effects of, and phenomena exhibited by isolated morbid processes at various stages in their course, to resort to experiments upon animals; but unless the anatomical basis of a disordered process in the human being has been previously ascertained, one has no idea how to reproduce the condition in an animal. The study of morbid anatomy and clinical medicine is thus inextricably blended with that of experimental pathology. It is true that certain pathological problems can be studied exclusively in the laboratory, but these are merely parts of the whole, and eventually must be correlated with the facts obtained through a study of the patient. The pathological and clinical aspects of a disease must, therefore, be studied side by side, otherwise our knowledge of it can never be precise and complete. Book Diseases of the Stomach and Intestines Classic Reprint

Download or read book Diseases of the Stomach and Intestines Classic Reprint written by Robert Coleman Kemp and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Stomach and Intestines In view of the excellent works on diseases of the stomach and intestines that have been placed before the medical profession, the publication of a new book on these subjects might almost seem to be superfluous. From a great accumulation of material, it is often difficult for the general practitioner to select simple and practical methods, and it is the endeavor that this volume should render service in this special direction. Many physicians have neither time nor opportunity to devote to a practical clinical course, and next in value to this for the purpose of instruction is the employment of photography to demonstrate the methods of diagnosis and treatment. Of this I have endeavored to take advantage. Many of the illustrations are from photographs of patients at the Manhattan State Hospital, taken by Mr. Hill, the official photographer, for whose services I am indebted to the courtesy of Dr. Win. Mabon, the Medical Superintendent. Some of the illustrations have been made by my artist from models. As visceral displacements have recently assumed an important position, their symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment, notably by mechanical methods, are specially described. Typhoid fever is included in this volume on account of its intestinal complications and for the purpose of differential diagnosis. A chapter is devoted to Diverticulitis, which has become an important subject. The endeavor has been made to indicate as clearly as possible the conditions which call for surgical procedure. Book Diseases of the Stomach

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Stomach: A d104-Book for Practitioners and Students During the last twenty years our views in the field of diseases of the stomach have undergone great changes; W.Beaumont in this country laid the corner-stone of scientific research and experimental study on the functions of this organ in 1825. From that time on the science of gastric diseases remained in a state of quiescence until 1867, when Kussmaul methodically applied the stomach pump in the treatment of dilatation of the stomach. The real progress, however, began a few years later, when Leube made use of the stomach pump for diagnostic purposes. Ewald, Boas, Beichmann, Kiegel, and others then instituted extensive studies of the gastric functions in health and disease. This second epoch in the study of digestive diseases, which had its inception in Germany, soon made itself felt in other countries, notably France, Russia, Austria, England, and America. In our counr try especially it seems that a very fruitful activity is developing in this direction. Among the older writers I would mention the names of Austin Flint, Delafield, Pepper, and Osier, all of whom contributed largely to our clinical knowledge in this branch of medicine. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Surgery of the Stomach: A Handbook of Diagnosis and Treatment IN the following pages I have attempted to give a practical account of The Diagnosis and Treatment of those Affections of the Stomach which are amenable to Direct Surgical Inter ference. 1 The significance of the information to be gained from test-meals is considered in some detail, because I believe that such investigations are of great value in the diagnosis of gastric disease. It appears to me strange, that whereas at the present time, bacteriological and pathological examinations are used so extensively in the diagnosis of disease, chemical methods are so rarely made use of in practice, and dealt with so briefly in text-books. The stomach-tube should be part of the armamentarium of every practitioner. It is not essential that he should perform all the quantitative analyses to which I refer, but I venture to think that he would be repaid amply, if he carried out the ordinary qualitative tests, and the estimation of the total acidity of the gastric contents. The practitioner, be he consultant or otherwise, who, without the aid which such investigations afford, continues to treat a patient suffer ing from persistent indigestion, or gastric pain, is acting unfairly to his patient and unjustly to himself. Book Diseases of the Stomach Classic Reprint

Download or read book Diseases of the Stomach Classic Reprint written by Franz Riegel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 866 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Stomach The appearance in English of Professor Riegel's book will prove a satisfaction to the many who have awaited its publication, because the words are those of a master who spares neither time nor pains in per fecting his work. With characteristic absence of posing, in simple, strong, and dignified language, the author has presented his subject with such sincerity and clearness that his views will meet almost invariably with ready acceptance. It has been a pleasure to give the work the careful examination necessary, and to compare his statements with those in current literature. The text has required but few modifications and additions to make it thoroughly represent the thought of the year. This is so for the reason that, although many contributions have been pub lished since the appearance of the German edit-ion, some of these have been the thrashing out of old straw, and others have been anticipated by the far-sightedness of the author. To the subjects of periodic vomit ing in children, syphilis of the stomach, the etiology of gastric ulcer, the blood in ulcer and cancer, diet in hyperacidity, acute dilatation of the stomach, digestion leukocytosis, benign tumors of the stomach, achylia gastrica, hematemesis of hepatic cirrhosis, congenital stenosis of the pylorus, operative procedure in stomach diseases, and to a few others, some words have been added, but pains have been taken not to change the author's own statements. All new matter presented in the volume is included in brackets, so that the reader will have, as nearly as the translation will admit, the work of Riegel, with the additions of some views for which the editor is alone responsible. In conclusion, I desire to express my thanks to Professor Alfred Stengel, the editor-in-chief, for thoughtful suggestions, to the publishers for numerous courtesies, and to Dr. Allen A. Jones for assistance in proof-reading and other particulars. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
