Unlike others on this topic, this text demonstrates how the endoscope incorporates pathophysiology, diagnostic, and treatment modalities into endoscopic practice. This new edition includes more than 1200 full-color photographs, endoscopic images, and line drawings that help illustrate and enhance the clarity of some of the elaborate procedures and diagnoses of gastroenterology. Edited by six prestigious gastroenterologists and with many new and fully updated chapters that are written by 134 of the most prominent names in the field of GI, this new edition is a comprehensive text that brings gastroenterology up-to-date in the fast paced world of endoscopy. Gastrointestinal Disease: An Endoscopic Approach, Second Edition concentrates more on the practical hands-on instructions in the endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of this disease. This expanded and improved text covers a wide range of gastroenterology topics such as the common gastritis, GERD and infectious diseases, benign and malignant lesions of the esophagus, the stomach, the intestines, and the pancreas and biliary tree. Special chapters, such as the Designing Clinical Research in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, The Prevention of Infection Following Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Complications of Peptic Ulcer Disease, and Credentialing for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, help make this book useful as a learning text, as well as a professional’s reference. This innovative text is an invaluable tool in the endoscopy collection and should be on the bookshelf of all gastroenterologists, surgeons, and internists that treat patients with gastrointestinal diseases.

Book Advances in Esophageal and Gastric Cancers

Download or read book Advances in Esophageal and Gastric Cancers written by Reginald Kelly and published by States Academic Press. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gastric cancer is the cancer that usually originates from the cells that line the stomach. The cancer may start as a polyp or an ulcer that initially may not cause any symptom or may cause bleeding or pain. Risk factors for gastric cancer are smoking, bacterial infection and acid reflux. Stomach cancer can also occur in the proximal part of the stomach which is close to esophagus. Esophageal cancer is a cancer that primarily develops in the esophagus. Ways of diagnosing stomach cancer include barium swallow, which examines the esophagus, stomach and duodenum, esophagogastroduodenoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, computed tomography scan, fecal occult blood test, etc. This book brings forth some of the unexplored aspects of esophageal and gastric cancers. Also included herein is a detailed explanation of the various methods used for the diagnosis and treatment of these cancers. The extensive content of this book provides the readers with a thorough understanding of the subject.

Book Motor Function of the Pharynx Esophagus and Its Sphincters

Download or read book Motor Function of the Pharynx Esophagus and Its Sphincters written by Ravinder Mittal and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deglutition or a swallow begins as a voluntary act in the oral cavity but proceeds autonomously in the pharynx and esophagus. Bilateral sequenced activation and inhibition of more than 25 pairs of muscles of mouth, pharynx, larynx, and esophagus is required during a swallow. A single swallow elicits peristalsis in the pharynx and esophagus along with relaxation of upper and lower esophageal sphincters. Multiple swallows, at closely spaced time intervals, demonstrate deglutitive inhibition; sphincters remain relaxed during the entire period, but only the last swallow elicits peristalsis. Laryngeal inlet closure or airway protection is very important during swallow. Upper part of the esophagus that includes upper esophageal sphincter is composed of skeletal muscles, middle esophagus is composed of a mixture of skeletal and smooth muscles, and lower esophagus, including lower esophageal sphincter, is composed of smooth muscles. Peristalsis progresses in seamless fashion, despite separate control mechanism, from the skeletal to smooth muscle esophagus. The esophagus's circular and longitudinal muscle layers contract synchronously during peristalsis. Sphincters maintain continuous tone; neuromuscular mechanisms for tonic closure in the upper and lower esophageal sphincters are different. Lower esophageal sphincter transient relaxation, belching mechanism, regurgitation, vomiting, and reflux are mediated via the brain stem.
