Book Diseases of the Ear in Childhood Classic Reprint

Download or read book Diseases of the Ear in Childhood Classic Reprint written by Gustav Alexander and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Ear in Childhood Almost every year new text-books on Otology are published, descriptive of the rapid progress and status of this branch of medical science. The pathological conditions which occur in infancy and childhood are described briefly, but there is no characteristic and exhaustive description of the anatomical, clinical, and therapeutic peculiarities, which are important factors in the child's car. The publication of the present volume was prompted by a desire to fill this need, and I willingly complied with the request of the editors of "The Diseases of Children" to write a supplementary volume dealing with the affections of the ear in infancy and childhood. The many peculiarities of childhood impart a special character to the affections of the ear, and give rise to pathological pictures peculiarly their own. The consideration of this fact was a sufficient incentive to undertake the work, but other factors rendered its execution imperative, namely, the great frequency of oral affections in infancy and childhood, and their importance in the mental and physical development of the young. It was difficult, however, to decide upon the amount of detail in which the various sections should be presented, for, if this volume were to adapt itself to the requirements of the pediatrist in accordance with the former ideas on the subject of juvenile otology, it would have been necessary to condense the available material. This, however, would have materially interfered with the scientific treatment of the questions involved. Feeling that the requirements of the modern pediatrist would not be served by a simple compilation of therapeutic indications, I decided to include all anatomical, clinical, and diagnostic facts, aside from the therapeutic armamentarium, which represent the present knowledge of our specialty. Bearing the practical importance of the latter in mind, I have endeavored to satisfy the demands of the general practitioner, so that he may obtain a clear understanding of the pathological pictures, of their causes and development, of the therapeutic measures to be adopted, and of the correct interpretation of difficult and complicated conditions which should be referred to the otologist for rational treatment. It need not be specially emphasized that a correct procedure on the part of the attending physician is of extreme importance in otological complications. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Care of the Eyes and Ears The object of this article, prepared at the request of the State Board of Health, is to assist, as far as may be, in preserving in a condition of health and usefulness the most important of the senses. Eyesight stands easily first in the estimation of all, and Hearing is only second to it. Blindness being one of the most frequent causes of pauperism, it becomes still more the duty of the guardians of the public health to present to the people such information as may help to prevent its occurrence than a regard simply for the happiness and prosperity of the individual would require. But there are so many instances of damage to, and loss of, one or the other of these precious senses when they might have been saved by the knowledge of a few sim ple facts, that there is no need to mention the relief of the community of a pecuniary burden to Show the necessity for such a publication. Book The Diseases of Children Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Diseases of Children Classic Reprint written by Henry Enos Tuley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diseases of Children This book has been written not for the specialist, but with the needs Of the general practitioner and student in view, and the diseases of children have been described as they are seen by the busy practitioner in his daily rounds. Believing that the question of infant feeding is one of the most important which confronts us, much more Space has been devoted to that subject than is given other important ones; We wish to interest the general practitioner in milk, its care and handling, the necessity for the formation of certified milk com missions, and the establishment of milk depots where certified milk may be placed within the reach Of the poor. Each disease is considered in a methodical manner. Special attention is given the dietetic and hygienic management, and the medicinal treatment is considered quite fully, with the repro duction of many tried formulae. Chapters have been included on Diseases of the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat, and the Skin. Temperature charts have been reproduced in a number of places, with the hope that this valuable clinical aid will be more Often employed in private practice than it is at present. A world of valuable data and statistics is lost because of the practitioner's failure properly to record bedside notes in daily visits to the private patient. We would encourage this feature Of the work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Ear: Illustrated by Clinical Observations The methods of observation of diseases of the ear, as well as the optical, acoustic, and other instruments employed in their diagnosis, have been very much improved within the last ten years. Such improvements are of great practical importance; this branch of the healing art having been long retarded, or kept in its primary, or empirical state, for want of thatguiding light which can only be supplied by an established and scientific pathology. With the advance of aural pathology, and the improved methods of diagnosis, the rational treatment of diseases of the car has been gra dually developed, while the various nostrums, chiefly of the stimulating kind, which were for merly dropped into the ear for the cure of all kinds of deafness, and this without distinction, are gradually disappearing: this disappearance, however, is slow, for. Ideas that have prevailed for centuries, and which, even for centuries, have been fraught with mischief, are not to be got rid of except by the gradual advance of knowledge, and require, too often, as well, the departure of one or more generations of men, who fondly cling to the remembrance and results of their early impressions, without taking the trouble to see in how many aspects they are erroneous, or in how many applications they do harm.
