Book Diseases of Cultivated Plants and Trees Classic Reprint

Download or read book Diseases of Cultivated Plants and Trees Classic Reprint written by George Massee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Cultivated Plants and Trees There are many causes which favour the spread and increase of disease at the present day, which had no existence in bygone times, perhaps the most potent is that commonly known as 'rapid transit.' Undoubtedly a change of seed is good, but, as experience has proved, you never know what disease you are intro ducing, and in many instances it is impossible to detect anything wrong until too late. The facility with which seeds, tubers, and even living plants can now be sent to the uttermost parts of the earth is a source of great danger from the point of view of introducing new diseases, and unless something in the way of a quarantine is insisted upon in every country, it appears highly probable that in course of time those diseases, which assume the proportions of an epidemic, Will be equally abundant wherever the host-plant is cultivated. Where total prohibition is not considered necessary, quarantine, which has answered so well in the case of animal diseases, might with advantage be applied in the case of fruit-trees, etc. The trees should be planted in some suitable place, and be examined from time to time by some qualified person. After a season's growth they might be allowed to pass into the country, if free from disease. I am quite aware that some people will say this idea is not practicable, and further, such precautions are -not necessary. There is certainly nothing impracticable; it is quite as easy to plant a tree in one place as another. The cost of a tree that has been in quarantine for a season would certainly cost more than it would at the moment of landing, but on the one hand the purchaser would secure a tree free from disease, whereas on the other hand the tree might prove to be infected With some disease. The fact that the most destructive diseases attacking fruit-trees and other plants in Europe, also eventually appear in whatever part of the world such trees are cultivated, is absolute proof that the disease has been conveyed along with the plant. Book Diseases of Trees and Shrubs

Download or read book Diseases of Trees and Shrubs written by Wayne A. Sinclair and published by Ithaca, N.Y. : Comstock Pub. Associates. This book was released on 1987 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diseases of Trees and Shrubs is a comprehensive pictorial survey of the diseases of, as well as the environmental damage to, forest and shade trees and woody ornamental plants in the United States and Canada. An authoritative reference, it is also a reliable and handy diagnostic tool that will simplify the identification of specific plant diseases by focusing on signs and symptoms that can be seen with the unaided eye or with a hand lens. This long-needed book gives readers complete, up-to-date information in an easily understood and convenient way. Each of the 247 color plates faces a page of explanatory text covering the biology and ecology (including host and geographic ranges) of the disease-causing agents (pathogens), a list of key references (there are more than 2,250), and, in some cases, black-and-white illustrations of pathogens. Selected information about biological and cultural control is provided. Scientific terms other than Latin names of pathogens are used only when necessary, and a glossary of terms and a comprehensive index are included. The color plates contain more than 1,700 illustrations of the diseases and injuries that some 350 biological agents and environmental factors cause to more than 250 species of plants. The book also serves as a guide to hundreds of other diseases related to those shown. The authors have used three levels of organization for this book. At the first level, diseases caused by biological agents are separated from those caused by environmental stimuli. At the second level, most diseases are grouped according to the plant part affected: leaves, twigs, limbs, roots, trunks, or the entire plant. At the third level, diseases are presented according to the taxonomic relationships among the pathogens. For this major project, the authors examined and photographed diseases and environmental damage in the field, visiting more than 50 states and Canadian provinces. Their book reflects the most important developments in fungal biology and taxonomy, plant bacteriology, virology, and environmentally induced stress in plants. It summarizes information about newly discovered diseases and provides up-to-date accounts of olds ones. Diseases of Trees and Shrubs can be profitable reading for anyone whose technical training does not extend beyond general biology, yet will also be informative to advanced students and plant pathologists. It will be welcomed by agricultural and horticultural advisers, plant inspectors, arborists, nursery professionals, landscapers, foresters, and urban planners. Wayne A. Sinclair is a Professor of Plant Pathology, Howard H. Lyon is Biological Photographer (retired), Department of Plant Pathology, and Warren T. Johnson is Professor of Entomology, all at Cornell University.

Book excerpt: Between 1845 and 1851 one and a half million Irish men, women and children died in misery from starvation and disease; the result of potato blight, a fungal disease that destroyed their potato crops. A million more people, driven to despair by the succession of appalling harvests, emigrated, mostly to America. So it was that a plant disease changed the course of history, its economic effects causing not only social but also major political upheaval.

Book Encyclopedia of Cultivated Plants 3 volumes

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Cultivated Plants 3 volumes written by Christopher Cumo and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-04-25 with total page 1307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers of this expansive, three-volume encyclopedia will gain scientific, sociological, and demographic insight into the complex relationship between plants and humans across history. Comprising three volumes and approximately half a million words, this work is likely the most comprehensive reference of its kind, providing detailed information not only about specific plants and food crops such as barley, corn, potato, rice, and wheat, but also interdisciplinary content that draws on the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. The entries underscore the fascination that humans have long held for plants, identifies the myriad reasons why much of life on earth would be impossible without plants, and points out the intertwined relationship of plants and humans—and how delicate this balance can be. While the majority of the content is dedicated to the food plants that are essential to human existence, material on ornamentals, fiber crops, pharmacological plants, and carnivorous plants is also included.
