Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Coniferous Trees Polyporus schweinitzii Fr. Ranks next in importance to Trametes pini in the natural forests. It commonly attacks the heartr wood of the base or butts of the trunk and of the roots of coniferous trees, especially the Douglas firs. The rot rarely extends farther up the trunk than the first saw log. The fungus spreads from diseas ed trees to healthy ones underground, where larger roots come in con tact with each other. Where this takes place it is common to find groups of trees affected with the fungus, and sometimes an entire group of Douglas firs are killed outright, In.most instances, how ever, the trees weakened by the fungus are either uprooted or broken off by the winds before death. It has been updated to include new informa tion that will help identify many of the diseases of conifers growing along the Pacific Coast of western North America. The revisions have been made mainly to provide the latest information on diagnosis, nomenclature, and new diseases, and to expand the coverage of important diseases of the Pacific Northwest. The basic format of this handbook remains essentially the same as the original version. The expanded coverage, more and better illustrations, and new informa tion are designed to make this handbook a useful tool in diagnosing diseases of Pacific Coast conifers. Book Some Diseases of New England Conifers

Download or read book Some Diseases of New England Conifers written by Hermann Von Schrenk and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Diseases of New England Conifers: A Preliminary Report Very little attention has been paid to the study of diseases of forest trees in the United States up to this time, and the reasons are Obvious enough. Up to within a few years the supply Of standing timber of all kinds has been so large that a few diseased trees, more or less, scat tered over wide areas were Of little account. The lumberman cut down the sound trees and paid no attention to such as he recognized to be of inferior value. The situation has changed within the last decades, and a wide-felt demand has arisen among all classes of people for a more economical and rational treatment of the existing forest lands, and for reestablishing forests on denuded areas. In the primeval forest the trees diseased because of fungous or insect attack were ignored. They were few in comparison with sound trees, and the price of a single tree was very low. At the present time, with a marked appreciation in the value Of timber, the agencies which injure trees for timber are of more immediate interest to the owners of woodlands. At this time the extent to which insects and fungi destroy trees can only be guessed at. Their work of destruction goes on silently here and there in the forest, and does not attract the attention of the casual Observer as do careless lumbering or forest fires. If the dead and dying trees in a forest could be collected, they would represent a con siderable percentage of the total forest. Forest fires are already not so common as they used to be, and the lumberman of today is beginning to understand that more can be realized from a given forest tract by rational treatment than by indiscriminate cutting. Insects and fungi, and other harmful agencies Of less importance, are being studied with the aim of arriving at a more complete understanding Of their manner of working. Book Text Book of the Diseases of Trees Classic Reprint

Download or read book Text Book of the Diseases of Trees Classic Reprint written by Robert Hartig and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of the Diseases of Trees Some fifty years ago a number of able investigators, of whom only Saxesen, Th. Hartig, and Ratzeburg need be named here, applied themselves to the study of insects. The life-history of forest insects, their harmfulness or usefulness, soon became the favourite study of many practical foresters, and in a few decades the joint efforts of numerous workers were rewarded by the elevation of Forest Entomology to the position of a much appreciated subject of scientific instruction, which has become the common property of all educated foresters. The case was otherwise with those plant-diseases which cannot be ascribed to the injuries of animals. Their investi gation was delayed until quite recently; for it was only after botanical science, by the aid of its chief instrument, the microscope, had obtained a clear insight into the normal strue ture and vital phenomena of plants, and especially after the study of fungi had been prosecuted in the last few decades by a series of distinguished investigators, that the examination of the phenomena of disease in the life of plants could be undertaken with a prospect of success. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Deciduous Forest Trees A series of investigations has been conducted for several years by the senior writer in another region where an extensive mixed forest has been severely injured by sulphur gases emanating from large copper smelters. The forest consists largely of oaks and pines grow ing on an extremely poor and sterile soil, and the general develop ment of the forest, even before the action of the sulphur gases, was very poor. The different species of forest trees showed a marked difference in susceptibility. The order, of susceptibility, beginning with the trees most easily killed, is as follows. Book Manual of Tree Diseases Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manual of Tree Diseases Classic Reprint written by William Howard Rankin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Tree Diseases The steadily accumulating knowledge of the diseases of trees in the United States has never been brought together and made available to the general public. The intention of this Manual is to describe and suggest means of control for the tree diseases that have been most studied. Much remains to be learned about many of these diseases, and still many more have never been investigated. Therefore, in the treatment of this subject there are many unavoidable limitations which the trained reader will perceive. The diseases of fruit-trees, and of field and vegetable crops, have received the attention of plant pathologists in most parts of the country for many years. The results of these investigations have been made available to the growers of these crops in various ways. On the other hand, the diseases of forest, shade, and ornamental trees have been largely neglected until very recently. Tree diseases cause enormous losses in the large tracts of forests on which we depend for timber. The timber owner has been slow to adopt the fundamentals of scientific forest practice, and so far methods for the control of forest-tree diseases have not begun to operate in reducing losses. The owners of shade and ornamental trees are constantly confronted with diseases which they wish to control. They have become accustomed to controlling insects, but the fundamentals involved in the appearance of a disease and the measures necessary to protect trees from further damage are largely puzzling to them. An understanding of the cause of disease is essential to the undertaking of adequate control measures. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stress Triggered Tree Diseases: The Diebacks and Declines In recent decades, dieback and decline diseases have killed or damaged millions of trees in the northeastern United States. Most hardwood tree species probably have been affected by dieback and decline diseases at some point, but relatively few species have suffered greatly. Unfortunately, the species affected most severely are among the most important ones. And the incidence and severity of these diseases seems on the rise. In this publication, special emphasis is placed on the decline and mortality of oak initiated by gypsy moth defoliation. The significant impact of this widespread defoliation in recent years has prompted great concern and considerable research.
