Book excerpt: We present a generalized multivariate seismic event identification method, Regularized Discrimination Analysis (RDA) [Friedman 1989], that can be applied to a large number of regional discriminants. RDA is readily adaptable to an outlier or classical identification approach to regional seismic identification. RDA is designed to address the problems associated with linear (LDA) and quadratic (QDA) discrimination in small-sample, high-dimensional settings. RDA includes LDA, QDA and Euclidean distance based nearest neighbor discrimination in its parameterization. RDA can be used to transition from an outlier analysis approach to seismic identification to classical discrimination as quality explosion calibration data are collected. Further, RDA provides the statistical structure to model highly correlated seismic measurements. We demonstrate the importance of including the correlation structure between seismic measurements in event identification. Not including this correlation structure in any identification framework can aggravate identification errors and give an erroneous impression of capability. With RDA, a large number of amplitudes from a Magnitude and Distance Amplitude Correction (MDAC) analysis [see Taylor et al. 1999] can be used and no a priori sub-selection of amplitudes (or discriminants) is necessary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To verify compliance with a Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), low energy seismic activity must be detected and discriminated. Monitoring small-scale seismic activity will require regional monitoring capabilities (within approximately 2000 km, U.S. Congress (1988)). The reliable discrimination of small-scale seismic events requires a multi-dimensional representation of the seismic signal. A multi-dimensional characterization might include wave arrival times, magnitudes, and incidence and azimuth angles. These measurements can be used singly or combined to form discriminants, which are then subjected to a set of discrimination rules to categorize the source event. Statistical discrimination methods of this type require a training sample, i.e., a set of real or simulated seismic data used to optimize or tune the discrimination algorithm by assigning weights to the various discriminants, or by modifying the structure of the algorithm. Identifying the signatures of various seismic sources also requires a geologic characterization of the shallow structure of the earth in each particular region of interest. The results can be used to construct seismic signals representing nuclear test sources. These synthetic or simulated signals can be combined with empirical signals of earthquakes and mining activities to form a training sample for each region. This paper identifies several statistical issues that must be resolved in order to address the CTBT verification mission. These are all associated with uncertainties in the multidimensional characterization measurements or in the correlations among them.

Reasenberg demonstrated that in Cascadia earthquakes are four times more likely to be foreshocks than in California. Many speakers emphasized the regional differences in all earthquake parameters, and it was generally understood that basic models of the earthquake occurrence must be modified for regional application. The idea that the focal mechanisms of foreshocks may differ from that of background activity was advocated by Y. Chen and identified by M. Ohtake as possibly the thus far most neglected property of foreshocks, in efforts to identify them. S. Matsumura proposed that focal mechanism patterns of small earthquakes may differ character istically near locked fault segments into which fault creep is advancing. Considerable discussion was devoted to the status of the seismic gap hypothesis because M. Wyss argued that the occurrence of the M 7. 9, 1986, Andreanof Islands earthquake was a confirmation of Reid's rebound theory of earthquakes and thus of the time predictable version of the gap hypothesis, whereas Y. Kagan believed he could negate this view by presenting a list of nine earthquake pairs with M> 7. 4, moment centroid separation of less than 100 km, and time difference less than about 60% of the time he estimated it would take plate motions to restore the slip of the first event.

Book excerpt: In the framework of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, development of reliable methods to discriminate between underground nuclear explosions and earthquakes at regional distances (less than 2500km) continues to be very important especially in connection with the last (in May, 1998) nuclear explosions conducted at Indian and Pakistan test sites. Since the lithosphere is a fractal, we suppose the signals, which propagate through the media, inherit its self similar' (scaling) features. We assumed that these features of explosions and earthquakes or their topological reconstructions (embeddings) have to be different. Scaling reflects correlations of more high order then it is possible to estimate by linear discriminating methods and can be used as base of non-linear discrimination. We propose to build a universal geometrical model of a seismic signal using the canon algorithm of F. Takens and to estimate scaling of the model. The scaling features were used as patterns of seismic signals for entering them into an artificial neural network. Records of nuclear explosions and earthquakes from different regions were included into the training set. The net was trained to classify types of seismic events. Results have shown 80% correct classification of the unknown signals. As additional tools for distinguishing between nuclear explosions and earthquakes we propose to use Hurst's method and the cross correlation method. Results of using these methods are demonstrated on examples of some explosions and earthquakes.

The fault constitutive law plays the role of an interface between microscopic processes in fault zones and macroscopic processes of a fault system, and the plate motion connects diverse crustal activities with mantle dynamics. An ambitious challenge for us is to develop realistic computer simulation models for the complete earthquake process on the basis of microphysics in fault zones and macro-dynamics in the crust-mantle system. Recent advances in high performance computer technology and numerical simulation methodology are bringing this vision within reach. The book consists of two parts and presents a cross-section of cutting-edge research in the field of computational earthquake physics. Part I includes works on microphysics of rupture and fault constitutive laws, and dynamic rupture, wave propagation and strong ground motion. Part II covers earthquake cycles, crustal deformation, plate dynamics, and seismicity change and its physical interpretation. Book excerpt: We continue exploring methodologies to improve earthquake-explosion discrimination using regional amplitude ratios such as P/S in a variety of frequency bands. Empirically, we demonstrate that such ratios separate explosions from earthquakes, using closely located pairs of earthquakes and explosions recorded on common, publicly available stations at test sites around the world (e.g., Nevada, Novaya Zemlya, Semipalatinsk, Lop Nor, India, Pakistan, and North Korea). We are also examining if there is any relationship between the observed P/S and the point source variability revealed by longer period full waveform modeling (e.g., Ford et al., 2008). For example, regional waveform modeling shows strong tectonic release from the May 1998 India test, in contrast with very little tectonic release in the October 2006 North Korea test, but the P/S discrimination behavior appears similar in both events using the limited regional data available. While regional amplitude ratios such as P/S can separate events in close proximity, it is also empirically well known that path effects can greatly distort observed amplitudes and make earthquakes appear very explosion like. Previously we have shown that the Magnitude Distance Amplitude Correction (MDAC) technique (Walter and Taylor, 2001) can account for simple 1-D attenuation and geometrical spreading corrections, as well as magnitude and site effects. However, in some regions, 1-D path corrections are a poor approximation, and we need to develop 2-D path corrections. Here we demonstrate a new 2-D attenuation tomography technique using the MDAC earthquake source model applied to a set of events and stations in both the Middle East and the Yellow Sea Korean Peninsula regions. We believe this new 2-D MDAC tomography has the potential to greatly improve earthquake-explosion discrimination, particularly in tectonically complex regions such as the Middle East.

Book excerpt: Recent applications of correlation methods to seismological problems illustrate the power of coherent signal processing applied to seismic waveforms. Examples of these applications include detection of low amplitude signals buried in ambient noise and cross-correlation of sets of waveforms to form event clusters and accurately measure delay times for event relocation and/or earth structure. These methods rely on the exploitation of the similarity of individual waveforms and have been successfully applied to large sets of empirical observations. However, in cases with little or no empirical event data, such as aseismic regions or exotic event types, correlation methods with observed seismograms will not be possible due to the lack of previously observed similar waveforms. This study uses model-based signals computed for three-dimensional (3D) Earth models to form the basis for correlation detection. Synthetic seismograms are computed for fully 3D models estimated from the Markov Chain Monte-Carlo (MCMC) method. MCMC uses stochastic sampling to fit multiple seismological data sets. Rather than estimate a single ''optimal'' model, MCMC results in a suite of models that sample the model space and incorporates uncertainty through variability of the models. The variability reflects our ignorance of Earth structure, due to limited resolution, data and modeling errors, and produces variability in the seismic waveform response. Model-based signals are combined using a subspace method where the synthetic signals are decomposed into an orthogonal basis by singular-value decomposition (SVD) and the observed waveforms are represented with a linear combination of a sub-set of eigenvectors (signals) associated with the most significant eigenvalues. We have demonstrated the method by modeling long-period (80-10 seconds) regional seismograms for a moderate (M{approx}5) earthquake near the China-North Korea border. Synthetic seismograms are computed with the Spectral Element Method for a suite of long-wavelength (2 degree) seismic velocity models based on the MCMC method. We are working on higher resolution (1 degree) models for the same region and methods to increase the frequency content of the synthetic seismograms.

Book excerpt: Earthquake Occurrence provides the reader with a review of algorithms applicable for modeling seismicity, such as short-term earthquake clustering and pseudo-periodic long-term behavior of major earthquakes. The concept of the likelihood ratio of a set of observations under different hypotheses is applied for comparison among various models. In short-term models, known by the term ETAS, the occurrence space and time rate density of earthquakes is modeled as the sum of two terms, one representing the independent or spontaneous events, and the other representing the activity triggered by previous earthquakes. Examples of the application of such algorithms in real cases are also reported. Dealing with long-term recurrence models, renewal time-dependent models, implying a pseudo-periodicity of earthquake occurrence, are compared with the simple time-independent Poisson model, in which every event occurs regardless of what has occurred in the past. The book also introduces a number of computer codes developed by the authors over decades of seismological research.
