Book Local Properties of Distributions of Stochastic Functionals

Download or read book Local Properties of Distributions of Stochastic Functionals written by Yu. A. Davydov, M. A. Lifshits, andN. V. Smorodina and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1998-02-10 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the distributions of functionals defined on the sample paths of stochastic processes. It contains systematic exposition and applications of three general research methods developed by the authors. (i) The method of stratifications is used to study the problem of absolute continuity of distribution for different classes of functionals under very mild smoothness assumptions. It can be used also for evaluation of the distribution density of the functional. (ii) The method of differential operators is based on the abstract formalism of differential calculus and proves to be a powerful tool for the investigation of the smoothness properties of the distributions. (iii) The superstructure method, which is a later modification of the method of stratifications, is used to derive strong limit theorems (in the variation metric) for the distributions of stochastic functionals under weak convergence of the processes. Various application examples concern the functionals of Gaussian, Poisson and diffusion processes as well as partial sum processes from the Donsker-Prokhorov scheme. The research methods and basic results in this book are presented here in monograph form for the first time. The text would be suitable for a graduate course in the theory of stochastic processes and related topics.

Book Kikagakuteki Henbun Mondai

Download or read book Kikagakuteki Henbun Mondai written by Seiki Nishikawa and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A minimal length curve joining two points in a surface is called a geodesic. One may trace the origin of the problem of finding geodesics back to the birth of calculus. Many contemporary mathematical problems, as in the case of geodesics, may be formulated as variational problems in surfaces or in a more generalized form on manifolds. One may characterize geometric variational problems as a field of mathematics that studies global aspects of variational problems relevant in the geometry and topology of manifolds. For example, the problem of finding a surface of minimal area spanning a given frame of wire originally appeared as a mathematical model for soap films. It has also been actively investigated as a geometric variational problem. With recent developments in computer graphics, totally new aspects of the study on the subject have begun to emerge. This book is intended to be an introduction to some of the fundamental questions and results in geometric variational problems, studying variational problems on the length of curves and the energy of maps. The first two chapters treat variational problems of the length and energy of curves in Riemannian manifolds, with an in-depth discussion of the existence and properties of geodesics viewed as solutions to variational problems. In addition, a special emphasis is placed on the facts that concepts of connection and covariant differentiation are naturally induced from the formula for the first variation in this problem, and that the notion of curvature is obtained from the formula for the second variation. The last two chapters treat the variational problem on the energy of maps between two Riemannian manifolds and its solution, harmonic maps. The concept of a harmonic map includes geodesics and minimal submanifolds as examples. Its existence and properties have successfully been applied to various problems in geometry and topology. The author discusses in detail the existence theorem of Eells-Sampson, which is considered to be the most fundamental among existence theorems for harmonic maps. The proof uses the inverse function theorem for Banach spaces. It is presented to be as self-contained as possible for easy reading. Each chapter may be read independently, with minimal preparation for covariant differentiation and curvature on manifolds. The first two chapters provide readers with basic knowledge of Riemannian manifolds. Prerequisites for reading this book include elementary facts in the theory of manifolds and functional analysis, which are included in the form of appendices. Exercises are given at the end of each chapter. This is the English translation of a book originally published in Japanese. It is an outgrowth of lectures delivered at Tohoku University and at the Summer Graduate Program held at the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications at the University of Minnesota. It would make a suitable textbook for advanced undergraduates and graduate students. This item will also be of interest to those working in analysis.

Book Second Order Equations of Elliptic and Parabolic Type

Download or read book Second Order Equations of Elliptic and Parabolic Type written by E. M. Landis and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1997-12-02 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most books on elliptic and parabolic equations emphasize existence and uniqueness of solutions. By contrast, this book focuses on the qualitative properties of solutions. In addition to the discussion of classical results for equations with smooth coefficients (Schauder estimates and the solvability of the Dirichlet problem for elliptic equations; the Dirichlet problem for the heat equation), the book describes properties of solutions to second order elliptic and parabolic equations with measurable coefficients near the boundary and at infinity. The book presents a fine elementary introduction to the theory of elliptic and parabolic equations of second order. The precise and clear exposition is suitable for graduate students as well as for research mathematicians who want to get acquainted with this area of the theory of partial differential equations.

Book Optimal Control of Distributed Systems Theory and Applications

Download or read book Optimal Control of Distributed Systems Theory and Applications written by A. V. Fursikov and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1999-11-16 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the analysis of optimal control problems for systems described by partial differential equations. The book offers simple and clear exposition of main results in this area. The methods proposed by the author cover cases where the controlled system corresponds to well-posed or ill-posed boundary value problems, which can be linear or nonlinear. The uniqueness problem for the solution of nonlinear optimal control problems is analyzed in various settings. Solutions of several previously unsolved problems are given. In addition, general methods are applied to the study of two problems connected with optimal control of fluid flows described by the Navier-Stokes equations.

Book Metric Characterization of Random Variables and Random Processes

Download or read book Metric Characterization of Random Variables and Random Processes written by Valeriĭ Vladimirovich Buldygin and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic covered in this book is the study of metric and other close characteristics of different spaces and classes of random variables and the application of the entropy method to the investigation of properties of stochastic processes whose values, or increments, belong to given spaces. The following processes appear in detail: pre-Gaussian processes, shot noise processes representable as integrals over processes with independent increments, quadratically Gaussian processes, and, in particular, correlogram-type estimates of the correlation function of a stationary Gaussian process, jointly strictly sub-Gaussian processes, etc. The book consists of eight chapters divided into four parts: The first part deals with classes of random variables and their metric characteristics. The second part presents properties of stochastic processes "imbedded" into a space of random variables discussed in the first part. The third part considers applications of the general theory. The fourth part outlines the necessary auxiliary material. Problems and solutions presented show the intrinsic relation existing between probability methods, analytic methods, and functional methods in the theory of stochastic processes. The concluding sections, "Comments" and "References", gives references to the literature used by the authors in writing the book.

Download or read book Hilbert C modules written by Vladimir Markovich Manuĭlov and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on lectures delivered by the authors at Moscow State University, this volume presents a detailed introduction to the theory of Hilbert $C*$-modules. Hilbert $C*$-modules provide a natural generalization of Hilbert spaces arising when the field of scalars $\mathbf{C $ is replaced by an arbitrary $C*$-algebra. The general theory of Hilbert $C*$-modules appeared more than 30 years ago in the pioneering papers of W. Paschke and M. Rieffel and has proved to be a powerful tool inoperator algebras theory, index theory of elliptic operators, $K$- and $KK$-theory, and in noncommutative geometry as a whole. Alongside these applications, the theory of Hilbert $C*$-modules is interesting on its own. In this book, the authors explain in detail the basic notions and results of thetheory, and provide a number of important examples. Some results related to the authors' research interests are also included. A large part of the book is devoted to structural results (self-duality, reflexivity) and to nonadjointable operators. Most of the book can be read with only a basic knowledge of functional analysis; however, some experience in the theory of operator algebras makes reading easier.

Book Geometry of Differential Forms

Download or read book Geometry of Differential Forms written by Shigeyuki Morita and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the times of Gauss, Riemann, and Poincare, one of the principal goals of the study of manifolds has been to relate local analytic properties of a manifold with its global topological properties. Among the high points on this route are the Gauss-Bonnet formula, the de Rham complex, and the Hodge theorem; these results show, in particular, that the central tool in reaching the main goal of global analysis is the theory of differential forms. The book by Morita is a comprehensive introduction to differential forms. It begins with a quick introduction to the notion of differentiable manifolds and then develops basic properties of differential forms as well as fundamental results concerning them, such as the de Rham and Frobenius theorems. The second half of the book is devoted to more advanced material, including Laplacians and harmonic forms on manifolds, the concepts of vector bundles and fiber bundles, and the theory of characteristic classes. Among the less traditional topics treated is a detailed description of the Chern-Weil theory. The book can serve as a textbook for undergraduate students and for graduate students in geometry.

Book Algebraic Topology An Intuitive Approach

Download or read book Algebraic Topology An Intuitive Approach written by Hajime Satō and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1999 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The single most difficult thing one faces when one begins to learn a new branch of mathematics is to get a feel for the mathematical sense of the subject. The purpose of this book is to help the aspiring reader acquire this essential common sense about algebraic topology in a short period of time. To this end, Sato leads the reader through simple but meaningful examples in concrete terms. Moreover, results are not discussed in their greatest possible generality, but in terms of the simplest and most essential cases. In response to suggestions from readers of the original edition of this book, Sato has added an appendix of useful definitions and results on sets, general topology, groups and such. He has also provided references. Topics covered include fundamental notions such as homeomorphisms, homotopy equivalence, fundamental groups and higher homotopy groups, homology and cohomology, fiber bundles, spectral sequences and characteristic classes. Objects and examples considered in the text include the torus, the Möbius strip, the Klein bottle, closed surfaces, cell complexes and vector bundles.

Book Advances in Moduli Theory

Download or read book Advances in Moduli Theory written by Kenji Ueno and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word ``moduli'' in the sense of this book first appeared in the epoch-making paper of B. Riemann, Theorie der Abel'schen Funktionen, published in 1857. Riemann defined a Riemann surface of an algebraic function field as a branched covering of a one-dimensional complex projective space, and found out that Riemann surfaces have parameters. This work gave birth to the theory of moduli. However, the viewpoint regarding a Riemann surface as an algebraic curve became the mainstream, and the moduli meant the parameters for the figures (graphs) defined by equations. In 1913, H. Weyl defined a Riemann surface as a complex manifold of dimension one. Moreover, Teichmuller's theory of quasiconformal mappings and Teichmuller spaces made a start for new development of the theory ofmoduli, making possible a complex analytic approach toward the theory of moduli of Riemann surfaces. This theory was then investigated and made complete by Ahlfors, Bers, Rauch, and others. However, the theory of Teichmuller spaces utilized the special nature of complex dimension one, and it was difficult to generalize it to an arbitrary dimension in a direct way. It was Kodaira-Spencer's deformation theory of complex manifolds that allowed one to study arbitrary dimensional complex manifolds.Initial motivation in Kodaira-Spencer's discussion was the need to clarify what one should mean by number of moduli. Their results, together with further work by Kuranishi, provided this notion with intrinsic meaning. This book begins by presenting the Kodaira-Spencer theory in its original naiveform in Chapter 1 and introduces readers to moduli theory from the viewpoint of complex analytic geometry. Chapter 2 briefly outlines the theory of period mapping and Jacobian variety for compact Riemann surfaces, with the Torelli theorem as a goal. The theory of period mappings for compact Riemann surfaces can be generalized to the theory of period mappings in terms of Hodge structures for compact Kahler manifolds. In Chapter 3, the authors state the theory of Hodge structures, focusingbriefly on period mappings. Chapter 4 explains conformal field theory as an application of moduli theory. This is the English translation of a book originally published in Japanese. Other books by Kenji Ueno published in this AMS series, Translations of Mathematical Monographs, include An Introduction toAlgebraic Geometry, Volume 166, Algebraic Geometry 1: From Algebraic Varieties to Schemes, Volume 185, and Algebraic Geometry 2: Sheaves and Cohomology, Volume 197.

Book Mathematics of Complexity and Dynamical Systems

Download or read book Mathematics of Complexity and Dynamical Systems written by Robert A. Meyers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-05 with total page 1885 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics of Complexity and Dynamical Systems is an authoritative reference to the basic tools and concepts of complexity, systems theory, and dynamical systems from the perspective of pure and applied mathematics. Complex systems are systems that comprise many interacting parts with the ability to generate a new quality of collective behavior through self-organization, e.g. the spontaneous formation of temporal, spatial or functional structures. These systems are often characterized by extreme sensitivity to initial conditions as well as emergent behavior that are not readily predictable or even completely deterministic. The more than 100 entries in this wide-ranging, single source work provide a comprehensive explication of the theory and applications of mathematical complexity, covering ergodic theory, fractals and multifractals, dynamical systems, perturbation theory, solitons, systems and control theory, and related topics. Mathematics of Complexity and Dynamical Systems is an essential reference for all those interested in mathematical complexity, from undergraduate and graduate students up through professional researchers.
