Book A Life at Work

  • Author : Thomas Moore
  • Publisher : Harmony
  • Release : 2009-01-06
  • ISBN : 0767922530
  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book A Life at Work written by Thomas Moore and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2009-01-06 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A job is never just a job. It is always connected to a deep and invisible process of finding meaning in life through work. In Thomas Moore’s groundbreaking book Care of the Soul, he wrote of “the great malady of the twentieth century…the loss of soul.” That bestselling work taught readers ways to cultivate depth, genuineness, and soulfulness in their everyday lives, and became a beloved classic. Now, in A Life’s Work, Moore turns to an aspect of our lives that looms large in our self-regard, an aspect by which we may even define ourselves—our work. The workplace, Moore knows, is a laboratory where matters of soul are worked out. A Life’s Work is about finding the right job, yes, and it is also about uncovering and becoming the person you were meant to be. Moore reveals the quest to find a life’s work in all its depth and mystery. All jobs, large and small, long-term and temporary, he writes, contribute to your life’s work. A particular job may be important because of the emotional rewards it offers or for the money. But beneath the surface, your labors are shaping your destiny for better or worse. If you ignore the deeper issues, you may not know the nature of your calling, and if you don’t do work that connects with your deep soul, you may always be dissatisfied, not only in your choice of work but in all other areas of life. Moore explores the often difficult process—the obstacles, blocks, and hardships of our own making—that we go through on our way to discovering our purpose, and reveals the joy that is our reward. He teaches us patience, models the necessary powers of reflection, and gives us the courage to keep going. A Life’s Work is a beautiful rumination, realistic and poignant, and a comforting and exhilarating guide to one of life’s biggest dilemmas and one of its greatest opportunities.

Book Discovering Life s Story The Evolution of an Idea

Download or read book Discovering Life s Story The Evolution of an Idea written by Joy Hakim and published by Candlewick Press. This book was released on 2024-04-16 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the second volume of the Discovering Life's Story series by best-selling author Joy Hakim, the theory of evolution takes hold--transforming ideas about survival, extinction, and life itself. Can species change? Or go extinct? In the eighteenth century, most people answer no to both questions. But in the century that follows, that certainty gets challenged as some people in Europe question the common belief that all creatures are the same as they've been since life's creation. The Evolution of an Idea, the second volume of Discovering Life's Story, opens with the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus, who attempts to create an organizing system for the myriad forms of life on earth. It continues into the late 1800s, when two Englishmen--Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace--each develop their own version of a startling new theory of how life-forms change over time. This evolutionary idea will alter the understanding of our place in the great web of life on earth. In this remarkable volume, author Joy Hakim continues charting the path of human discovery and shows how groundbreaking thinkers began to unlock the biological secrets of our own existence.

Book Life

    Book Details:
  • Author : Didier Fassin
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2018-06-22
  • ISBN : 1509526684
  • Pages : 150 pages

Download or read book Life written by Didier Fassin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-06-22 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we think of life in its dual expression, matter and experience, the living and the lived? Philosophers and, more recently, social scientists have offered multiple answers to this question, often privileging one expression or the other – the biological or the biographical. But is it possible to conceive of them together and thus reconcile naturalist and humanist approaches? Using research conducted on three continents and engaging in critical dialogue with Wittgenstein, Benjamin, and Foucault, Didier Fassin attempts to do so by developing three concepts: forms of life, ethics of life, and politics of life. In the conditions of refugees and asylum seekers, in the light of mortality statistics and death benefits, and via a genealogical and ethnographical inquiry, the moral economy of life reveals troubling tensions in the way contemporary societies treat human beings. Once the pieces of this anthropological composition are assembled, like in Georges Perec’s jigsaw puzzle, an image appears: that of unequal lives.

Book New Directions in Law and Literature

Download or read book New Directions in Law and Literature written by Elizabeth S. Anker and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-25 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After its heyday in the 1970s and 1980s, many wondered whether the law and literature movement would retain vitality. This collection of essays, featuring twenty-two prominent scholars from literature departments as well as law schools, showcases the vibrancy of recent work in the field while highlighting its many new directions. New Directions in Law and Literature furnishes an overview of where the field has been, its recent past, and its potential futures. Some of the essays examine the methodological choices that have affected the field; among these are concern for globalization, the integration of approaches from history and political theory, the application of new theoretical models from affect studies and queer theory, and expansion beyond text to performance and the image. Others grapple with particular intersections between law and literature, whether in copyright law, competing visions of alternatives to marriage, or the role of ornament in the law's construction of racialized bodies. The volume is designed to be a course book that is accessible to undergraduates and law students as well as relevant to academics with an interest in law and the humanities. The essays are simultaneously intended to be introductory and addressed to experts in law and literature. More than any other existing book in the field, New Directions furnishes a guide to the most exciting new work in law and literature while also situating that work within more established debates and conversations.

Book Discovering and Embracing Your Life Purpose

Download or read book Discovering and Embracing Your Life Purpose written by Paul Peters and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-03-31 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pacific Book: “This book can be quite eye opening to Christians and non-Christians alike...” Clarion "The self-help text Discovering and Embracing Your Life Purpose encourages developing an understanding of God’s personalized plan for each person...” Blue ink “The author is undeniably encouraging and accomplishes his goal of providing doable steps for discovering our purpose in life...” This book has been my dream to write. It truly is my life’s purpose illustrated in words. It begins by taking you on a personal journey by peering into a man by the name of Tim and his life. We do not come by knowing our purpose when we first entered this world. There are no instructions or clear guidelines given to us, but there are clues. Many of us never even find our purpose and thus never live the life we were created for. My attempt in this book is to provide the clues or “Puzzle pieces” that I believe were not only put within us to find but are also discovered outside of us through life choices (good and bad). Tim’s story illustrates how in his life and mistakes he made he was able to discover some of those clues and be able to take Pain and turn it into triumph and purpose. For us to understand our purpose and reason for our very existence it entails that we start asking some questions and start searching for answers. Although finding one’s purpose is not necessarily easy it is worth the search as once you find your purpose you find fulfillment, joy, love, and a sense of meaning. Each chapter is another puzzle piece to help you discover what your purpose may be. Personally, I discovered mine after much pain and a lot of mistakes. Ultimately, I found it in my relationship with God. As you read you will begin to find and discover the clues to your purpose and my hope is it will keep you motivated to keep searching. As you venture through the book you will begin to discover your strengths, talents, gifts, passions, temperament, Love Language, Personality style, and Personality type. Various assessments, and tests have been provided as well as web sites to assist to identify each of these areas to help you better understand what you purpose is. My hope is that as you better understand yourself and what makes you who you are your Purpose will be revealed. Once you do then I believe your life will unfold with a greater sense of meaning and purpose with a desire to live out your purpose in service to others. I end with these 2 quotes. “There is no greater calling than to serve your fellow men, there is no greater contribution than to help the weak, there is no greater satisfaction than to have done it well” Walter Reuther. “Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many” Mathew 20:28.
