Download or read book Discovering Fijian written by Albert J Schutz and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-07-03 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the early history of the study of the Fijian language. The main part of the story begins with the dozen words collected by Cook's naturalist, William Anderson, in 1777, and ends with David Hazlewood's Fijian grammar and dictionary in 1850. The account focuses on how the study of the language advanced, especially through the efforts of several Wesleyan missionaries. Their first ground-breaking innovation was David Cargill's and William Cross's decision in 1835-36 to simplify the writing of what sounded (to English hearers) like consonant clusters, but were actually unit phonemes. This system, elegant in its simplicity, is still criticized by linguistic amateurs, but lauded by its users and by professional linguists. The study analyzes 20 word lists that were gathered during this period, ranging in size from a dozen to several hundred. Collected mainly by explorers, traders, beachcombers, and roving philologists, these annotated lists are valuable especially for their early examples of "Foreigner Talk"-the language style that Fijians used to communicate with outsiders. Finally, the book discusses Hazlewood's linguistic contributions, noting that his analysis of vowel length as an essential alphabetic feature predates similar advances elsewhere in the Pacific (especially in Hawai'i) by nearly a century. This contrast becomes even more dramatic when one compares living conditions in Hawai'i with those in Fiji, where missionaries were forced to endure family illnesses and deaths, natural disasters, internal warfare, and cannibalism.

Book excerpt: Of all the island groups in the outer Pacific none surpass the Fijis in their rare combination of beautiful scenery and interesting natives. The islands are upon the opposite side of the world from England, for the meridian of 180° passes through the centre of the group crossing the island of Taviuni... That dauntless old rover, Abel Jansen Tasman, discovered them in 1643 on his way from Tonga in the Heemskirk and Zeehaan and named them "Prince William's Islands" and "Heemskirk's Shoals." After this, they were all but forgotten until July 2, 1774, when Captain James Cook sighted the small island of Vatoa in the extreme southeastern end of the group. The natives fled into the forest upon the approach of his boat, and he contented himself by leaving a knife, some medals and nails in a conspicuous place. Finding many sea-turtles in the region, he named his land-fall "Turtle Island," and then departed from the Fijis never to return.

Book Our Wealth is Loving Each Other

Download or read book Our Wealth is Loving Each Other written by Karen J. Brison and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Wealth Is Loving Each Other explores the fluid and context-bound nature of cultural and personal identity among indigenous Fijians. While national identity in Fiji is often defined in opposition to the West through reference to a romanticized pre-modern tradition, individual Fijians are often more concerned with defining their identity vis-à-vis other villagers and other groups within Fiji. When people craft self accounts to justify their position within the indigenous Fijian community they question and redefine both tradition and modernity. Modernity on the margins is an experience of anxiety provoking contradictions between competing ideologies, and between international ideologies and local experiences. Indigenous Fijians have been exposed to international ideologies and government programs extolling the virtues of "pre-modern" communities that place communal good and time honored tradition over individual gain. But other waves of policy and rhetoric have stressed individual achievement and the need to "shake" individuals out of community bonds to foster economic development. Individuals feel contradictory pressures to be autonomous, achieving individuals and to subordinate self to community and tradition. Brison examines traditional kava ceremonies, evangelical church rhetoric, and individual life history narratives, to show how individuals draw on a repertoire of narratives from local and international culture to define their identity and sense of self. Our Wealth is Loving Each Other is appropriate for upper level students and anyone with an interest in Fiji or anthropology.
