Excerpt: ... the new messiah; ob, who is the comforter? An Oration delivered by Mrs. Cora L. V. Tappan, at Manchester, on Sunday Afternoon, June 27th, 1875. Mr. Osxey in the Chair. This subject has been presented to us by one of your number, and we are asked to give the views of the guides of this medium upon the question as to who this Comforter is that was to come upon the earth. You will recollect that the periods of the visitations of the Messiahs to earth have been periods of time in the cycles and records of each nation that may be measured, and just as distinctly stated, as any of the epochs of history or the geological periods of the earth's structure; that waves of spiritual thought, absolute visitations of the Divine Mind have been given to humanity since the beginning of earth's history just in proportion to their needs, or to the culmination of those periods that require them; and we announce as a fact that it is just as much in accordance with the divine beneficence that these epochs of spiritual inspiration shall take place, as it is that through natural laws the worlds and systems of the solar and sidereal heavens shall be evolved; that wherever humanity has dwelt, there have been evidences of inspiration and spiritual power; that wherever this spiritual power has dwelt, there have been culminations in the form of prophets, seers, and saviours; that the visitation of those divine ministrations must be, according to the tracings of history, once in 2,000 or 2,500 years of the earth's history; that an epoch of spiritual development corresponds to a certain epoch of the earth's physical and national development; and these spiritual forces culminate, presenting to the world their epitome in the form of revelations, Messiahs, Bibles, and...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ebenezer Howard (1850-1928) is famous worldwide for founding the Garden City movement, and he continues to be frequently cited by planners and theorists. When he was dying, he urged his prospective biographer to remember that 'the spiritual dimension' had always been central to his life and work. He wanted this to be prominently brought out in any biography. Almost a century after his death, Ebenezer Howard: Inventor of the Garden City is the first book that does justice to that wish. Frances Knight has written a very readable biography, the first since the 1980s, with a properly contextualized analysis of Howard's religious views. Shaped in the world of London Congregationalism, he became a keen seeker after unity and peace. He grafted new religious ideas, particularly from spiritualism, and later from Theosophy, into his biblically-informed, Protestant faith. Prone to spiritual epiphanies, he believed that he had been raised up to preach the 'gospel of the garden city' and to tackle the housing crisis by beginning to build the New Jerusalem in the Hertfordshire countryside. Although he sometimes appeared naïve, he was astute, and highly skilled at combining different, and sometimes conflicting, ideas in a way that built consensus and gained support from people across the social and political spectrum. As well as explaining the remarkable sequence of events that led from the publication of his ideas to the foundation of Letchworth as the world's first garden city, just five years later, this book investigates other neglected aspects of Howard's life including: the years he spent in America, his career as a shorthand writer, and his relationship with his first wife Lizzie - herself an important garden city pioneer. Howard wanted his garden cities to be places of spiritual exploration, and as this book shows, early Letchworth certainly lived up to those expectations.

Book Psychics Sensitives and Somnambules

Download or read book Psychics Sensitives and Somnambules written by Rodger I. Anderson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claimants of paranormal abilities have always attracted controversy and fascination, and sometimes rigorous study by scientists. Charles Bailey, an Australian medium, was seemingly able to materialize different objects--animate and inanimate--under conditions which made it difficult to conceive how they could have been normally produced. Sumitra Singh, a woman of Northern India who in 1984 became subject to epileptic-type seizures, claimed to be possessed by spirits of the dead. Franck Kluski was a Polish poet, banker and physical medium who specialized in both human and animal materializations. This biographical dictionary contains profiles of 330 psychics worldwide from Tony Agpaoa to Elenor Zugun, each accompanied by a bibliography listing the primary sources consulted. The primary focus is on those claimed psychics who have figured prominently in the history of the subject, though some lesser-known figures are included to show how rich, varied, and colorful that history has been. The aim throughout is to present each case as fairly and dispassionately as the facts allow, with a particular eye for accuracy in details and presentation. The approach is historical, not apologetic or accusatory, making the work ideally suited as a permanent reference.
