Book The Transition of Religion to Culture in Law and Public Discourse

Download or read book The Transition of Religion to Culture in Law and Public Discourse written by Lori G. Beaman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-27 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the recent trend toward the transformation of religious symbols and practices into culture in Western democracies. Analyses of three legal cases involving religion in the public sphere are used to illuminate this trend: a municipal council chamber; a town hall; and town board meetings. Each case involves a different national context—Canada, France and the United States—and each illustrates something interesting about the shape-shifting nature of religion, specifically its flexibility and dexterity in the face of the secular, the religious and the plural. Despite the differences in national contexts, in each instance religion is transformed into culture or heritage by the courts to justify or excuse its presence and to distance the state from the possibility that it is violating legal norms of distance from religion. The cultural practice or symbol is represented as a shared national value or activity. Transforming the ‘Other’ into ‘Us’ through reconstitution is also possible. Finally, anxiety about the ‘Other’ becomes part of the story of rendering religion as culture, resulting in the impugning of anyone who dares to question the putative shared culture. The book will be essential reading for students, academics and policy-makers working in the areas of sociology of religion, religious studies, socio-legal studies, law and public policy, constitutional law, religion and politics, and cultural studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses on the Nature of Religion: And on Commerce and Business; With Some Occasional Discourses The interests of the mind and heart, spiritual interests, in other words - the interests involved in religion, are real and supreme. Neglected, disregarded, ridiculed, ruined as they may be; ruined as they may be in mere folly, in mere scorn; they are still real and supreme. Notwithstanding all appearances, delusions, fashions and opinions to the contrary, this is true, and will be true forever. All essential interests centre ultimately in the soul; all that do not centre there, are circumstantial, transitory, evanescent; they belong to things that perish. This is what I have endeavoured to show in a previous discourse, and for this purpose I have appealed in the first place, to Society. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses on the Nature of Religion: And on Commerce and Business; With Some Occasional Discourses The world, which is appointed for our temporary dwelling place, was made for this end. The whole creation' around us, is to the soul, a subject and a ministering creation. The mighty globe itself, with all its glorious apparatus and furniture, is but a theatre for the care of the soul, the theatre Of its redemption. This vast universe is but a means. But look at the earth alone. Why was it made such as it is? Its fruit ful soils, its rich valleys, its mountain-tops, and its roll ing oceans; its humbler scenes, clothed with beauty and light, good even in the sight of their Maker, fair - fair to mortal eyes - why were they given? They were not given for mere sustenance and supply; for much less would have sufficed for that end. They need not have been so beautiful to have answered that end. They could have spared their verdure and flow ers and fragrance, and still have yielded sustenance. The groves might never have waved in the breeze but have stood in the rigidity Of an iron forest; the hills might not have been moulded into forms Of beauty. THE IDENTITY OF RELIGION WITH GOODNESS, AND WITH A GOOD LIFE. IF A MAN SAT, I LOVE GOD, AND HATETH HIS BROTHER, HE IS A LIAR; FOR HE THAT LOVETH NOT HIS BROTHER WHOM HE HATH SEEN, HOW CAN HB LOVE GOD WHOM HE HATH NOT SEEN 1--1 John iv. 24. If there is any mission for the true teacher to accomplish in this age, it is to identify religion with goodness; to show that they are the same thing, manifestations, that is to say, of the same principle; to show, in other words and according to the Apostle, that no man is to be accounted a lover of God, who is not a lover of his brother. It is, I say again, to identify religion with morals, religion with virtue; with justice, truth, integrity, honesty, generosity, disinterestedness; religion with the highest beauty and loveliness of character. This, I repeat, is the great mission, and message of the true teacher to-day. What it may be some other day, what transcendental thing may be waiting to be taught, I do not know; but this, I conceive, is the practical business of religious instruction now. Let me not be misunderstood, as if I were supposed to say that this or any other mere doctrine, were the ultimate end of preaching. That is, to make men holy. But how shall any preaching avail to make men holy, unless it do rightly and clearly teach them what it is to be holy? If they mistake here, all their labour to be religious, all their hearing of the word, Sabbath keeping, praying, and striving, .will be in vain. And therefore, I hold that to teach this, and especially to shew that religion is not something else than a good heart, but is that very thing; this, I say, is the burden of the present time. I use now an old prophetic phrase, and I may remark here, that every..

Book Religion and Public Discourse in an Age of Transition

Download or read book Religion and Public Discourse in an Age of Transition written by Geoffrey Cameron and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technology, tourism, politics, and law have connected human beings around the world more closely than ever before, but this closeness has, paradoxically, given rise to fear, distrust, and misunderstanding between nation-states and religions. In light of the tensions and conflicts that arise from these complex relationships, many search for ways to find peace and understanding through a “global public sphere.” There citizens can deliberate on issues of worldwide concern. Their voices can be heard by institutions able to translate public opinion into public policy that embraces more than simply the interests and ideas of the wealthy and the empowered. Contributors to this volume address various aspects of this challenge within the context of Bahá’í thought and practice, whose goal is to lay the foundations for a new world civilization that harmonizes the spiritual and material aspects of human existence. Bahá’í teachings view religion as a source of enduring insight that can enable humanity to repair and transcend patterns of disunity, to foster justice within the structures of society, and to advance the cause of peace. Accordingly, religion can and ought to play a role in the broader project of creating a pattern of public discourse capable of supporting humanity’s transition to the next stage in its collective development. The essays in this book make novel contributions to the growing literature on post-secularism and on religion and the public sphere. The authors additionally present new areas of inquiry for future research on the Bahá’í faith.

Download or read book Manufacturing Religion written by Russell T. McCutcheon and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997-06-19 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new book, author Russell McCutcheon offers a powerful critique of traditional scholarship on religion, focusing on multiple interrelated targets. Most prominent among these are the History of Religions as a discipline; Mircea Eliade, one of the founders of the modern discipline; recent scholarship on Eliade's life and politics; contemporary textbooks on world religions; and the oft-repeated bromide that "religion" is a sui generis phenomenon. McCutcheon skillfully analyzes the ideological basis for and service of the sui generis argument, demonstrating that it has been used to constitute the field's object of study in a form that is ahistoric, apolitical, fetishized, and sacrosanct. As such, he charges, it has helped to create departments, jobs, and publication outlets for those who are comfortable with such a suspect construction, while establishing a disciplinary ethos of astounding theoretical naivete and a body of scholarship to match. Surveying the textbooks available for introductory courses in comparative religion, the author finds that they uniformly adopt the sui generis line and all that comes with it. As a result, he argues, they are not just uncritical (which helps keep them popular among the audiences for which they are intended, but badly disserve), but actively inhibit the emergence of critical perspectives and capacities. And on the geo-political scale, he contends, the study of religion as an ahistorical category participates in a larger system of political domination and economic and cultural imperialism.
