It has not been my object to give a critical exposition of the Lord's Prayer, but to draw from it those practical suggestions which may at once enable us to repeat it with a more intelligent and devout spirit, and to act out the great truths which it involves in our daily work and conversation. In short, the great result which I aim at in these discourses is that state of heart and conduct in which we shall utter this prayer both with our lips and with our lives. The reader of this book, then, need not expect to find in it anything new in thought or interpretation, but I trust that whoever may take it up for the purpose of quickening his religious affections, and animating him in the Christian life, may not be disappointed - may find some help and profit. I am conscious, however, that but little is said here compared with what might be, upon this pregnant and beautiful formula. Like all our Saviors teachings, we detect in it new suggestions each time that we examine it - we find in it truths that cannot be exhausted, and meanings that cannot be expressed. But my labors such as they are, and with the object which I have stated, are here presented. May they be blessed of Him to whom so may ages and conditions of humanity have lifted and will lift this prayer, and may they contribute something to the advancement of his cause who taught us to utter it. He has, besides, a word or two to say for himself, to the reader of this book. If any are so impatient that they cannot stop to talk with him a moment, he cannot help it. This book may be said to be printed, rather than published; for it is not supposed that it will fall into the hands of many who are not in some way acquainted with the author. It would be idle to weary any one with the reasons which have induced him thus to venture out from his retirement, in the very beginning, as it were, of his ministry. He cannot plead the novel and interesting apology, that he has been "urged," or even "solicited." He has taken the responsibility, and must abide by the consequences. There are some things in this little volume, of which some who read it, perhaps many, may disapprove. The views here promulgated have not been rashly adopted. With a scanty Library, and few counsellors, the author has studied out for himself many of the results presented in these Discourses. He is satisfied that they are correct, and his prayer is, that if they are not, one effect of their publication may be his own conviction of his error. Criticism is neither deprecated nor defied.
